Buffy’s Corner 5/25/25 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer and Reading Reality’s Stacking the Shelves.

I’m enjoying a three day weekend with the most lovely weather ever, so I’m pretty happy right now. I hope everyone else is having a good weekend too.

Now that I’ve been including my book haul in these Buffy’s Corner posts for a month, I’m thinking about going back to my old once or twice a month book haul posts on Saturdays. It takes a lot more time to put these posts together, and Buffy’s Corner used to be one of my “easy” posts, lol.

Upcoming reads & reviews:

Did I mention all my May books are really long? Lol. So once again it took me all week to get through a book, which was A Spell for Change (almost 500 pages), but I enjoyed it even though it’s more of a slow paced book. Look for my review tomorrow. I just received a finished copy of Harmattan Season which comes out this week, so I’m going to squeeze it in next since it’s a novella. After that I’m jumping into my June books, and I’ll probably start with The Afterlife Project and The Palace of Illusions.

Other posts this week:

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is “animal companion,” and I’ll definitely be participating! I found three exciting  cover reveals for Future Fiction on Wednesday; I’m going to post one more Wyrd & Wonder themed list on Friday; and Saturday is the end of the month (!) so look for my May Wrap-Up post.

Over-Booked: This week’s book haul:

It was a very good week for book mail! Huge thanks to Redhook, Saga Press, Titan Books, Minotaur Books and Tor Books for these review copies:-D

A Mother’s Guide to the Apocalypse by Hollie Overton. “If you knew the world was ending, what would you want your children to know about survival? What would you sacrifice to protect them? What secrets would you want to stay buried?” This is a post-apocalyptic mystery that sounds really good. The story takes place in Los Angeles, and I’m always looking for stories with that location/setting.

A Game in Yellow by Hailey Piper. Euphoria meets Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke in this latest novel by the Bram Stoker Award–winning author Hailey Piper, following a couple whose search to spice up their sex life leads them down a path of madness.” This sounds crazy! It’s a blend of horror and queer erotica, and I’m ready to go out of my comfort zone with this:-)

The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association by Caitlin Rozakis. “Two parents and their recently-bitten-werewolf daughter try to fit into a privileged New England society of magic aristocracy. But deadly terrors await them – ancient prophecies, remorseless magical trials, hidden conspiracies and the PTA bake sale.” This sounds like a lot of fun, and the finished copy I was sent has painted edges!

Death at the Door by Olivia Blacke. The odd couple of crime-solving returns in Olivia Blacke’s Death at the Door, where a ghost and her living roommate find another mystery on their doorstep.” This is the sequel to A New Lease On Death, which I have but haven’t read yet. Now I have a good reason to catch up, and maybe I’ll binge read both books!

Harmattan Season by Tochi Onyebuchi. “Award-winning author Tochi Onyebuchi’s new standalone novel is hardboiled fantasy Raymond Chandler meets P. Djèlí Clark in a postcolonial West Africa.” It’s been far too long since the last Onyebuchi book I read, so I’m ready for this one!

On the NetGalley front, it was also a good week. With thanks to Orbit Books, Thomas & Mercer, Ace and St. Martin’s Press:-D

I had to grab The Bone Raiders by Jackson Ford (although I hope to score a physical copy at some point) because Ford is one of my favorite underrated authors. The start of a no‑holds‑barred, action‑packed fantasy series from the always irreverent Jackson Ford where a group of charmingly-named Bone Raiders harness the power of gigantic, fire-breathing lizards to defend their homeland from an invading enemy.”

How To Fake a Haunting by Christa Carmen. A desperate woman’s plot to frighten her husband out of her life takes a nightmarish turn in a chilling novel of modern horror by a Bram Stoker Award–winning author.” I have loved everything I’ve read by Carmen, so of course this will be a must read.

Violet Thistlewaite is Not a Villain Anymore by Emily Krempholtz. A powerful plant witch and a grumpy alchemist must work together to save their quiet town from a magical plague in this debut cozy fantasy romance about starting over, redemption, and what it really means to be a good person.” This cozy fantasy has the longest title and the prettiest cover, and hopefully the story will be good as well!

Atlas of Unknowable Things by McCormick Templeman. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets Modern Gothic in this smart and upmarket horror novel.” This sounds like an intriguing dark academia and not my normal read, but I’m looking forward to it.

  1. The Violet Thistlewaite book looks cute but I’m not sure I’m a cozy fantasy kinda gal. I’ve tried a few but just am not sold yet haha. Good luck with your June reads…I’m very slowly making my way through mine.

    • Tammy

Thank you! I am looking forward to June, since May was sort of a weird reading month.

  2. As ever – an amazing book haul, Tammy. And that’s a lovely photo of Badger proudly carrying half a tree in his mouth:). Have a lovely week.

  3. Violet Thistlewaite looks good! Love the picture of Badger. I start my weekly wrap-up at the beginning of the week and add a bit each day. Keeps me on the blog once a day at least when I can. I like that. But I know not everyone has time or wants to do that! Enjoying my 3 day weekend as well!

  4. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader

I am glad you are enjoying a great weekend with a lovely weather Tammy! And Badger is so proud of his stick!

  5. Love Badger with his stick. Lulu used to get sticks for a very short time. Now her view of sticks and balls is if you want them you go get them yourself. lol Enjoy that perfect weather! We have rain the next 3 days off and on, but today is perfect and it will be cool with the rain.

  6. Badger!!!

Let us know how you like A Mother’s Guide to the Apocalypse, please because that sounds like a book I would enjoy.

  7. The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association sounds like such a fun read! Not sure it’d entirely be my thing, but it’s a neat concept. Hope you enjoy all the new books!

  8. Atlas on Unknowable Things sounds like it could be good, and the new Christa Carmen book is on my wishlist too. I think there’s another of hers that I’ve yet to read so might find time for that before the new one.
Have a great long weekend 😀

  9. Such a big stick! The animal companion post I did a few weeks ago was a huge hit, now the Internet will be flooded with them I’m thinking of doing ten times my animals posed with books LOL

  10. Funny about the time it takes you to do different types of posts. I recall when I started doing quarterly look back posts I thought they’d be fairly quick and easy compared to some others, but they end up taking far more time. 🙂

  11. That’s a really big stick!! And how many interesting books!! The Bone Raiders and Violet Thistlewaite are the ones I am the most curious about but there are a ton of interesting books in your haul!! I am curious to see what you will think about them!!

  12. Great book haul. So many books to look forward to.
And Badger – what is it with dogs and big sticks. Too funny.
My two are going crazy at the moment. Lots of baby rabbits everywhere!
    Lynn 😀
