Future Fiction #18: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I have three thrilling cover reveals today, one of them a cover I tried to share about a month ago but, well, I jumped the gun:-D I’m thrilled to be able to share and flail over all three of these, take a look:

The upstart firm Foundryside is struggling to make it. Orso Igancio and his star employee, former thief Sancia Grado, are accomplishing brilliant things with scriving, the magical art of encoding sentience into everyday objects, but it’s not enough. The massive merchant houses of Tevanne won’t tolerate competition, and they’re willing to do anything to crush Foundryside.

But even the merchant houses of Tevanne might have met their match. An immensely powerful and deadly entity has been resurrected in the shadows of Tevanne, one that’s not interested in wealth or trade routes: a hierophant, one of the ancient practitioners of scriving. And he has a great fascination for Foundryside, and its employees – especially Sancia.

Now Sancia and the rest of Foundryside must race to combat this new menace, which means understanding the origins of scriving itself – before the hierophant burns Tevanne to the ground.

Shorefall (Founders #2) by Robert Jackson Bennett. Releases in January 2020 from Del Rey. Foundryside was one of my favorite books last year, and I couldn’t be more excited for the sequel. Too bad it’s such a long wait! And seriously, is this cover amazing or what?? Have you read Foundryside yet?

The fifth installment in Seanan McGuire’s award-winning, bestselling Wayward Children series, Come Tumbling Down picks up the threads left dangling by Every Heart a Doorway and Down Among the Sticks and Bones

When Jack left Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children she was carrying the body of her deliciously deranged sister–whom she had recently murdered in a fit of righteous justice–back to their home on the Moors.

But death in their adopted world isn’t always as permanent as it is here, and when Jack is herself carried back into the school, it becomes clear that something has happened to her. Something terrible. Something of which only the maddest of scientists could conceive. Something only her friends are equipped to help her overcome.

Eleanor West’s “No Quests” rule is about to be broken.

Again.

Come Tumbling Down (Wayward Children #5) by Seanan McGuire. Releases in January 2020 from Tor.com. I should have figured it out from the title (Jack and Jill!) but it wasn’t until I read the blurb that I realized—and just about lost it when I did!—that this appears to be a sequel to Down Among the Sticks and Bones, my very favorite installment in this series. Seriously, this series is pure magic, dark, dangerous magic, and you should definitely start reading it if you aren’t already.

Acclaimed author Priya Sharma transports readers back in time with Ormeshadow, a coming-of-age story as dark and rich as good soil.

Burning with resentment and intrigue, this fantastical family drama invites readers to dig up the secrets of the Belman family, and wonder whether myths and legends are real enough to answer for a history of sin.

Uprooted from Bath by his father’s failures, Gideon Belman finds himself stranded on Ormeshadow farm, an ancient land of chalk and ash and shadow. His uncle’s land crests the Orme, a buried, sleeping dragon that dreams resentment, jealousy, estrangement, death. Or so the folklore says. Growing up in a house that hates him, Gideon finds his only comforts in the land. Gideon will live or die by the Orme, as all his family has.

Ormeshadow by Priya Sharma. Releases in October 2019 from Tor.com. The blurb is a little vague, but I’m intrigued by the idea of a dragon buried under the earth, and I’m curious to see how that fits into the story. I love this cover! It’s simple but effective.

  1. I still need to read Foundryside, but am SO excited about Come Tumbling Down!! I’ve been wondering what happened with Jack and Jill ever since the end of Every Heart a Doorway.

Me too, and I love how she’s bouncing around, continuing the characters’ stories or jumping back in time to tell about their pasts. It’s such a unique way to tell a story.

  2. AAAAAAAH. I can’t wait for the next Wayward Children book! (Why do we have to way until January????). I’ve been wanting to read Foundryside for ages — the paperback comes out this month, so I’m getting a copy. Can’t wait! The next book looks gorgeous. And your 3rd pick is one I haven’t heard of, but sure — dragons? Yup, I’ll read it.

I’m so excited to see what’s going on with Jack. I feel like I need to go back and reread Every Heart a Doorway and Down Among the Sticks and Bones first:-)

  3. So Foundryside is on my library book to get list because I know they have a copy and I know how much you loved it (and lots of other people have too). I agree that cover is stunning. YES, another Jack book. You totally surprised me on this one. That was my absolute favorite of the series so far so I’m thrilled to visit them again. But funny, when I read the title, the John Cougar Mellencamp song popped in my head …”When the walls, come tumbling down.” What can I say, it’s one of those days.

    • Tammy

Ha ha, that’s funny. Great, now you’ve got that song stuck in my head, lol;-)

I just wish Shorefall wasn’t so far away, I just loved Foundryside and I can hardly wait:-)

    • Tammy

I agree, the cover is pretty tame. Maybe it all makes sense after you read the story…

    • Tammy

I didn’t even realize the date had been pushed, but you’re right, it used to be fall! Ugh…

  4. Oooh, I wasn’t planning to continue after Foundryside, but that cover is almost enough to tempt me, haha! Ormeshadow sounds incredible, I’m going to have to keep that on my radar!

    • Tammy

Hey, when a cover can make you read a book you weren’t planning on reading, I think it did it’s job, lol.

  5. You know, I’ve seen Ormeshadow floating around, and I understand it’s fantasy or magical realism.. but for some reason I’m really put off by the cover, and I usually love Tor’s covers. It just looks like Women’s Fiction to me… more on the literary side than the fantasy side. Nothing wrong with that of course, it’s just not usually my thing. I’ll be curious to see what you think of it!

The cover is unusual, I’m thinking maybe after you read the story you’ll understand it? Maybe that gold circle has something to do with the plot…
