Future Fiction #4 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Fiction

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Today I’m thrilled to feature some recent cover reveals, and all of them (once again!) are upcoming fantasy releases by women authors. Tor.com gets the spotlight because they released TWO new covers this past week, and I just had to share both of them! Also, may I point out how GORGEOUS each of these covers is:

A dragon shapeshifter and a healer with power over the earth fight a corrupt empire in this thrilling and deeply emotional romantic fantasy from the USA Today bestselling author of Radiance.

Magic is outlawed in the Krael Empire and punishable by death. Born with the gift of earth magic, the free trader Halani keeps her dangerous secret closely guarded. When her uncle buys a mysterious artifact, a piece of bone belonging to a long-dead draga, Halani knows it’s far more than what it seems.

Dragas haven’t been seen for more than a century, and most believe them extinct. They’re wrong. Dragas still walk among the denizens of the Empire, disguised as humans. Malachus is a draga living on borrowed time. The magic that has protected him will soon turn on him–unless he finds a key part of his heritage. He has tracked it to a group of free traders, among them a grave-robbing earth witch who fascinates him as much as she frustrates him with her many secrets.

Unbeknownst to both, the Empire’s twisted empress searches for a draga of her own, to capture and kill as a trophy. As Malachus the hunter becomes the hunted, Halani must risk herself and all she loves to save him from the Empire’s machinations and his own lethal birthright.

Dragon Unleashed (Fallen Empire #2) by Grace Draven. Releases in September 2019 from Ace Books. So this cover was actually revealed back in December, but for some reason I missed it. Well, today we remedy that error and now you all know that one of my favorite books last year, Phoenix Unbound, has a sequel and a STUNNING cover! (cover art by Arantza Sestayo) The story looks like it’s going to revolve around a different set of characters, but will take place in the same world. Did I mention how excited I am to read this??

There is a Wild Man who lives in the deep quiet of Greenhollow, and he listens to the wood. Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads.

When Greenhollow Hall acquires a handsome, intensely curious new owner in Henry Silver, everything changes. Old secrets better left buried are dug up, and Tobias is forced to reckon with his troubled past—both the green magic of the woods, and the dark things that rest in its heart.

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh. Releases in June 2019 from Tor.com. Described as a queer take on the Green Man mythos, this novella is being compared to Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, and it’s already been blurbed by Novik as well. I’m completely blown away by the mysterious cover art (by David Curtis) and I’m really looking forward to this!

Jewels and their lapidaries and have all but passed into myth.

Jorit, broke and branded a thief, just wants to escape the Far Reaches for something better. Ania, a rumpled librarian, is trying to protect her books from the Pressmen, who value knowledge but none of the humanity that generates it.

When they stumble upon a mysterious clock powered by an ancient jewel, they may discover secrets in the past that will change the future forever.

The Fire Opal Mechanism (Gemworld #2) by Fran Wilde. Releases in June 2019 from Tor.com. Another gorgeous cover reveal from Tor.com with cover art by Tommy Arnold! It’s been several years since the first novella in the series was released, and I’m very curious to dive back into Wilde’s fascinating world.

  1. ooh, interested in Dragon Unleashed! I love Grace Draven, but didn’t feel the first book, so I wonder if I could read the second book if it has new characters? unless they’re continuing the storyline from the first, hmm

I’m not sure, but I get the feeling it might act as a stand alone. Although I really recommend the first book, it was amazing!

  2. You are right – these covers. Silver in the Wood has such a mysterious one and whoever chose the artist for the Draven series definitely knew what they were doing. Another week of great showcases!

The artwork on the Draven book reminds me of some other covers, so I’m sure we’ve seen that artist before.

  3. YASSSSSSSSSSSSS New Grace Draven I am SO PUMPED. Also for the new Fran Wilde, was super stoked waiting for the cover reveal the other day. The other book looks like my type of thing too, omg how am I ever going to read all of these? Haha!

Ha ha, good luck! I know what you mean. I have absolutely no reason to buy any books for a long time;-)

You’re right, the more you look at it, the more detail you see. I’m excited to see what the story is like:-)

  4. Wow I really like Dragon Unleashed! It has such an earthy feel to it with all the vegetation, and the dragon shapeshifter/ earth witch thing sounds cool too.

  5. I love the look of the Fran Wilde book, even though the covers of the other two books are absolutely amazing – that’s the one which is calling to me… As ever, you aren’t helping me keep my book buying habit under control!

Romance isn’t my thing either, but I loved the first book. The romance was worth it for the rest of the story:-)
