The Friday Face-Off – Stormy Sky

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme:  “Raining cats and dogs.” A cover featuring a stormy sky.

Ok I’m tired, it’s Sunday (as I’m writing this post) and I have to go to work tomorrow. I’m struggling to find a stormy cover on my “read” shelf for some reason. So I’m interpreting the idea of “stormy skies” in a different way. Does a dust storm count??

Well, I say it counts. The Martian by Andy Weir was one of my favorite books several years ago, and it’s got some great covers. No “raining cats and dogs,” but the dust storms are ferocious! There’s no need to introduce this book, I’m assuming you all are familiar?? Take a look at some of the covers, I seriously love ALL of these:

Crown Books 2014 | Russian edition 2014

Hungarian 2014 | Vietnamese 2016

Indonesian 2015 | Danish 2015

Subterranean Press 2015 | Japanese 2014

I’m not sure I can pick one favorite. I love the original Crown edition because it really gives you a sense of the danger of being alone on Mars. But I also love the colors and the overall design of the Hungarian, Indonesian and Danish editions. And wow, the Japanese edition is so cool! But, if I have to pick one, I guess my favorite is:

What do you think? Which is your favorite?

  1. Strangely enough I considered this book for my choice too so I definitely think it counts. I like your choice because I think it gives a really good feel for the loneliness. I also love the Crown edition.
    Lynn 😀

  2. I have to say… if I saw these on a shelf, the only one I would pick up is that first one. Really not sure why. I can’t point anything out on the others and saw, THIS is why I don’t like this one.

  3. Ooh, I shouldn’t have skipped this week–I actually know plenty of books with stormy skies, for once! 😉
I think I like the one that you chose the best also, The Japanese one is really neat also. All of these covers are pretty cool, I like how they all really capture the same atmosphere and match, but are still very different.

  4. Dust storms totally count ha ha! I like the one you picked too, it totally gives that feel of being lost on an alien planet. I like the Crown and Hungarian versions, but wow the Danish one it totally my fave!

  5. Martian dust storms are still storms, so it sure counts! I like your choice, though my personal favorite would probably have to be the Crown Books edition. Watney looks so helpless and in trouble in that one!

He does, I agree. I do love that cover as well, but there are a lot of really good ones for this book:-)

  6. It always fascinates me just how many different covers a single book can have. All of these are great too and I agree that it’s hard to pick a favorite. I lean towards the Crown one because it’s the one I have but I also quite like the Indonesian and the Danish ones.

I always love the covers of the books I own as well. But it is fun to see what other countries do with the same book:-)
