Reading “Firsts” for 2024

I forgot to do this tag last year (oops), so this year I wrote it in my calendar so I wouldn’t forget! This is a quick, fun tag created by girlxoxo, and March is the perfect time to look back at the first few months of the year and take a look at some “firsts.” I hope you’ll join in too!

First book read in 2024:

According to Goodreads, I finished Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands on January 4th, so this is my first official “read” book of the year. And it was a good one!

First review of 2024:

It seems to be a yearly tradition: kicking off the new year with a review of a Wayward Children book, and this year it was Mislaid in Parts Half-Known. I suspect 2025 will be the same, as there is at least one more book in the series coming out next year.

First debut read in 2024:

Thirteen Ways to Kill Lulabelle Rock might be the only debut I’ve read so far this year, but it was a good one! I loved Maud Woolf’s quirky story about a clone assassin, and I’m eager to see what the author writes next.

First “new to me” author of 2024:

I’m so glad I discovered this series! The Serpent & the Wings of Night was pitched to me by a Tor publicist (for which I am eternally grateful!) and I had so many books to read and almost didn’t accept it. But it looked good enough to take a chance on, and wow. This is the dark vampire story I didn’t know I needed:-)

First book of 2024 that slayed me:

I’m making an effort to read some of my owned books this year, and Remarkably Bright Creatures was my first pick. And wow it was a great way to start my TBR Jar challenge. The octopus in the story is more of a catalyst for everything else that happens, so don’t go into it thinking it’s all about the octopus, because there’s so much more to this story.

First book of 2024 that I wish I could get back the time I spent reading it:

I’ve had several disappointing reads this year, but Your Shadow Half Remains is the first one I thought of for this prompt. The story just didn’t live up to this beautiful, spooky cover, unfortunately.

First 5 star book of 2024:

I’m cheating a little here, because technically this is my third 5 star read of the year. But I’ve already mentioned the other two books and I don’t want any repeats:-) The Heiress is my favorite Rachel Hawkins book so far, I loved everything about it!

How has your reading year been so far? Let me know if you do this tag too:-D

  1. I’ve added The Serpent and the Wings of Night to my “wanted” list on the strength of your review, and because I cannot resist a good vampire story: this one in particular sounds very, very promising… 🙂

  2. OK I definitely need to read Serpent And The Wings Of Night based on what you’ve said. And soon I really will read the Emily Wilde books. I’m glad you’re finding so many five star reads lately too, hopefull that will continue to happen.

Me too, I don’t hand out five star ratings lightly, so I feel lucky I’ve had a handful already this year.

  3. Great tag. Maybe I’ll try to work it in at the end of the week. What a fun recap! Especially since it seems my attempt to resurrect the blog is sticking this time. The Heiress might be an answer for one of mine but definitely not in the same question – haha!

Ha ha I remember what you thought of The Heiress. But this is a simply post to pull together, I hope you join in.

  4. Fun tag! I’ll be picking a copy of Remarkably Bright Creatures from the library on Thursday, so it’s good to know what to expect (e.g. not all about the octopus!)

  5. Remarkably Bright Creatures was a fun read, but despite the octopus being more a catalyst I found my favorite scenes were by far those with the octopus. 🙂

Ooh this is good fun! I’m going to do this too I think, maybe in April as I need to get a few more books under my belt!

  7. The Serpent and the Wings of Night went straight onto my TBR list after I read your review. I’m also looking forward to getting back to the world of Emily Wilde. Great tag 😀
