I forgot to do this tag last year (oops), so this year I wrote it in my calendar so I wouldn’t forget! This is a quick, fun tag created by girlxoxo, and March is the perfect time to look back at the first few months of the year and take a look at some “firsts.” I hope you’ll join in too!
First book read in 2024:
According to Goodreads, I finished Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands on January 4th, so this is my first official “read” book of the year. And it was a good one!
First review of 2024:
It seems to be a yearly tradition: kicking off the new year with a review of a Wayward Children book, and this year it was Mislaid in Parts Half-Known. I suspect 2025 will be the same, as there is at least one more book in the series coming out next year.
First debut read in 2024:
Thirteen Ways to Kill Lulabelle Rock might be the only debut I’ve read so far this year, but it was a good one! I loved Maud Woolf’s quirky story about a clone assassin, and I’m eager to see what the author writes next.
First “new to me” author of 2024:
I’m so glad I discovered this series! The Serpent & the Wings of Night was pitched to me by a Tor publicist (for which I am eternally grateful!) and I had so many books to read and almost didn’t accept it. But it looked good enough to take a chance on, and wow. This is the dark vampire story I didn’t know I needed:-)
First book of 2024 that slayed me:
I’m making an effort to read some of my owned books this year, and Remarkably Bright Creatures was my first pick. And wow it was a great way to start my TBR Jar challenge. The octopus in the story is more of a catalyst for everything else that happens, so don’t go into it thinking it’s all about the octopus, because there’s so much more to this story.
First book of 2024 that I wish I could get back the time I spent reading it:
I’ve had several disappointing reads this year, but Your Shadow Half Remains is the first one I thought of for this prompt. The story just didn’t live up to this beautiful, spooky cover, unfortunately.
First 5 star book of 2024:
I’m cheating a little here, because technically this is my third 5 star read of the year. But I’ve already mentioned the other two books and I don’t want any repeats:-) The Heiress is my favorite Rachel Hawkins book so far, I loved everything about it!
I’ve added The Serpent and the Wings of Night to my “wanted” list on the strength of your review, and because I cannot resist a good vampire story: this one in particular sounds very, very promising… 🙂
It was so well written, and very dark!
OK I definitely need to read Serpent And The Wings Of Night based on what you’ve said. And soon I really will read the Emily Wilde books. I’m glad you’re finding so many five star reads lately too, hopefull that will continue to happen.
Me too, I don’t hand out five star ratings lightly, so I feel lucky I’ve had a handful already this year.
Great post! I might be joining in too!
Oh cool. It’s fun, and I’d love to see your answers.
Great tag, Tammy! 😀 Again I am reminded that I still need to read The Serpent & the Wings of Night but definitely gonna do it this year.
Thanks Stephanie! I hope you do read it, I feel like you’re going to love it too.
Great tag. Maybe I’ll try to work it in at the end of the week. What a fun recap! Especially since it seems my attempt to resurrect the blog is sticking this time. The Heiress might be an answer for one of mine but definitely not in the same question – haha!

Ha ha I remember what you thought of The Heiress. But this is a simply post to pull together, I hope you join in.
I loved The Serpent and the Wings of Night too!
I hope the second book is just as good:-)
Fun tag! I’ll be picking a copy of Remarkably Bright Creatures from the library on Thursday, so it’s good to know what to expect (e.g. not all about the octopus!)
I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Remarkably Bright Creatures:-)
Love this tag!! Might try to do this one soon
Do it! It’s pretty low key easy:-)
Remarkably Bright Creatures was a fun read, but despite the octopus being more a catalyst I found my favorite scenes were by far those with the octopus. 🙂
I loved the octopus too, but the characters really grew on me as well.
So sad about that Sunny Moraine book. The cover is fantastic.

It was sad. It was just so boring, unfortunately.
Ooh this is good fun! I’m going to do this too I think, maybe in April as I need to get a few more books under my belt!
I hope you do it! And the nice thing is there’s no wrong time to post it:-)
This is a fun tag! And lots of pretty covers as a result in your answers!
And I swear I didn’t choose these based on the cover;-)
This is such a nice tag!! I may do it too, towards the end of the month!!
(And I am dying to read Remarkably Bright Creatures!!)
I hope you do it, Susy!
The Serpent and the Wings of Night went straight onto my TBR list after I read your review. I’m also looking forward to getting back to the world of Emily Wilde. Great tag 😀
Thanks, I hope you can read those books soon.
This is a fun and easy tag, might have to do this one!
You can totally fit it in!
I love this tag – I should also join in.
Lynn 😀
It’s one of my favorites:-)
This does seem like a pretty cool tag to do around this time of the year! 😀

It was fun and easy:-)
Love this post! I need to do one. I’ll try to put it on an open day in my own blog calendar and do it. Interesting to see which books you picked. The cover on that first one is beautiful!
