Five Star Predictions for the First Half of 2024

I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

It’s been a minute since I did one of these “predictions” posts, and after taking a break, I thought I’d try again. Maybe it’s too much pressure to assume I’m going to give a book five stars, but hey, it’s all in good fun:-) Here are ten books releasing between January and June 2024, that have a good chance of being five star reads for me (listed alphabetically):

An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson. This is the first of TWO books by Gibson on this list, and I’m excited for both of them. I loved A Dowry of Blood, and this is the next book in the series, a dark academia tale.

The Angel of Indian Lake by Stephen Graham Jones. The finale of Jones’s epic slasher/horror series is bound to leave an impact on me, and it could very well be a five star read, even if the other books in the series didn’t quite get that rating. (My Heart is a Chainsaw and Don’ Fear the Reaper)

Echo of Worlds by M.R. Carey. This is book two in Carey’s epic SF, multiverse series, and I gave the first book (Infinity Gate) five stars, so I have high hopes for this.

Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett. I sense a trend: I gave the first book in the series (Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries) five stars, so there’s a good chance I’ll love this as well.

And the second book on this list by S.T. Gibson, Evocation. This is the start to a new fantasy series, and it sounds so good!

Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes. I loved Dead Silence, and this has a similar feel to it. Horror in space is definitely one of my favorite sub genres!

Craig DiLouie is a favorite author of mine, and although only one of his books received a full five star rating from me so far (Our War), I always look forward to his new books. I’m loving the horror movie trope, so How To Make a Horror Movie and Survive could be a lot of fun.

Likewise, Chris Panatier is doing some very creative things in SFF fiction, and his first book (The Phlebotomist) was a five star read for me. I’m hoping The Redemption of Morgan Bright works just as well.

I loved Yume Kitasei’s The Deep Sky this past year, and I’m adding her next book, The Stardust Grail, to this list because she’s such a talented author.

Finally, What Feasts At Night by T. Kingfisher is the sequel to the very creepy What Moves the Dead. Kingfisher is one of those authors who can always surprise me:-)

Do you ever make five star predictions? Are you going to read any of my selections?

  1. The title How to Make a Horror Movie and Survive had me thinking back to a 2017 Japanese zombie comedy called One Cut of the Dead. The first part was so very boring but then things flipped and it was a lot of fun from then on, and it would fit the title of the book, too.

  2. Very cool to see your predictions! I hope they all deserve the five stars! I’m really looking forward to the DiLouie and Kingfisher books…. and I still need to read the 1st in the Carey series so I’ll be ready for #2!

  3. I really hope that these end up being five star reads for you. I’m really hoping to finally read Emily Wilde soon so fingers crossed that I end up loving it as much as pretty much everyone else.

Ha ha I know what you mean, I just think it’s fun to speculate. And yep, I have a good feeling about Emily Wilde too:-)

Ha ha I know! I’m actually curious after I read them all to see which (if any) turn out to be 5 stars.
