The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: All things fire/red cover
I went back a few years for my pick this week: We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix, one of my very favorite of his books. I found four covers to compare, take a look:
Quirk Books hardcover edition – U.S. 2018 | Quirk Books paperback edition 2019
Polish edition 2020 | French edition 2020
I really like the first two Quirk covers, but I love the tongue in cheek approach to the Quirk paperback edition the most, which takes the music theme of the story and makes the cover look like a rock magazine. For that reason, I’ll pick it as my favorite!
The Polish edition is probably the most appropriate for the story, but I’d pick up the Quirk edition. It’s so eye-catching!

Very true!
I think the original is still my favorite but that magazine style one is still awesome.
I like that they did completely different things with the hardcover and paperback.
The first one is my favorite but I also like the one that looks like a Rolling Stone magazine cover. Very cool. And I still need to read this book. I think I’ve had it on my kindle for 2 or 3 years now, oops.
It’s really good, but very very dark.
I haven’t read it. My favorite cover is the first one, with the cool illustration of fire.
And here is mine, on a classic related to fire: https://wordsandpeace.com/2021/12/24/friday-face-off-fire/
That is a good cover:-)
My favorite is the original hardcover, but I do love how Quirk books always does this whole meta thing with his covers – IKEA catalogue, 80s VHS, rock magazines, etc. They’re all so clever!
They really do lots of clever covers:-)
Merry Christmas!!!
Merry Christmas, Greg!
I like the first two cover the best too!
Quirk always does really good covers:-)
They certainly have the look of a magazine down. I think my favorite is that first Quirk cover.
I like that one too. Very appropriate for the story:-)
I love that magazine style cover – so clever. And I love that unusual Polish cover. I need to add this to my wishlist.
