Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!
New book mail keeps coming, and I’m trying my best to keep up! Here’s my latest book haul:
Physical books for review:
Today’s Publisher Appreciation Award goes to Tor Books, because five of these six review copies are from the various Tor teams:-) They have been so generous lately, so big shout out to all the lovely publicists who give me plenty to read!
I’m thrilled to have this lovely finished copy of The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. I loved this so much!
I don’t often get surprise book mail these days so it’s always a good day when one hits my mailbox. From Tor.com I was excited to receive Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore, which I featured on Future Fiction a few months ago.
And with thanks to Tor, this gorgeous finished copy of Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki was another surprise arrival. I’m a little behind with my September reading so I haven’t read this yet, but look for a review in the next few weeks for sure.
So I’m one of the five people on the planet that still hasn’t read Dune, and this spin-off series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson is one I’m not familiar with. Dune: The Lady of Caladan is book two in this series, so I doubt I’ll be reading this any time soon, unfortunately. However, this hardcover is lovely, so big thanks to Tor for sending it my way.
Another beautiful finished hardcover came from Tor Nightfire: Slewfoot by Brom. I will also be reading this a bit late, but honestly, I don’t mind posting a review in October, since it’s more of a horror title anyway.
Finally, I received a surprise ARC of Temple of No God by H.M. Long with thanks to Titan Books! I really enjoyed the first book in the series, Hall of Smoke, and I can’t wait to dive into this one.
OK I guess four of these were surprise book mail after all:-D
Digital books for review:
Just a couple of new digital ARCs this week. First, I accepted Peel Back and See by Mike Thorn, a collection of short horror stories. Thank you to Mike for offering a review copy! This comes out next month so it will be perfect for a spooky Halloween read.
I also accepted Boys, Beasts & Men by Sam J. Miller. Sam has written a couple of novels that are on my TBR but I just haven’t had time to fit them in, so I’m looking forward to this short story collection. Many thanks to Tachyon Publications for the copy!
Oh wow I hadn’t realized they were still putting out new Dune books. The stuff I’ve heard about the Brian Herbert ones have not been encouraging. I am very curious about Light From Uncommon Stars
I think I’ll concentrate on the original Dune book before I worry about sequels:-)
I’ve actually heard of most of these, which is new. Also, only eight books this week? What’ll you read come Friday?
ha ha I have no idea;-)
I loved The Last House on Needless Street! I’ve already heard good things about Mike Thorn’s collection, enjoy!

Thanks, I think I will enjoy it:-)
I’ve only ever read the first Dune. I haven’t decided if I want to try the rest of them….
I’ll be happy if I can read the first book too, I know it’s very long…
Light from Uncommon Stars sounds like fun, and with SciFi Month approaching it might be a worthy addition to my reading queue 🙂
Yes, just what I was thinking. Although I am going to try and read it before then.
I love that cover and title for Light From Uncommon Stars. I hope the story lives up to them. 🙂 And I hope you enjoy Dune if you ever get to it. I’ve only read the first book, but I’ve read it twice now. Well worth trying, time permitting.
Good to know. I think I would love Dune.
I have original paperbacks on my shelf from Dune series , Foundation series, Ringworld series – all stuff I read in high school or early college years. The scifi I read was all about space and tech in those days.
Anne – Books of My Heart recently posted…A Song of Flight by Juliet Marillier
I think I may have an old paperback, but I’m pretty sure I never actually read it.
I can’t believe that I have read Dune and you haven’t!! 🙂 🙂 Enjoy your pretty books! 🙂
LOL I can’t believe that either!
So nice that you got a finished hardcover of the Brom book! Those are always beautiful. Enjoy!
I was so grateful to get that copy, now I just have to read it;-)
LOL don’t worry, I haven’t read Dune either. I tried when I was in college, but just couldn’t get into, though back then I was also much less experienced with SFF so I might have simply felt overwhelmed. I definitely want to try picking it up again though, but maybe I’ll check out the new movie first!
Good idea!
I got a digital copy of The Battle of the Linquist Mages and I am very curious!
Me too, it sounds crazy!
Looks like a lot of good books! There is really only one or two series from Tor, like Jennifer Lynn Armentrout’s books, that I always hope for and never seem to get physical copies of very often. It’s nice when you have a favorite publisher that does that! Enjoy your new books!

It is nice to get physical copies for sure:-)
Ooooh, so many good hauls! I’m especially excited for Peel Back and See!

Me too, the cover is so strange and hopefully the stories are too:-)
Nice haul this week. The only one I know for sure I want to read is The Last House on Needless Street, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for your reviews to see if any of the others might be a good fit for me. 🙂
Last House was a trip!
A terrific haul.
I love the covers for the Hall of Smoke/Temple of No God books.
Lynn 😀
