Over-Booked [146] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

New book mail keeps coming, and I’m trying my best to keep up! Here’s my latest book haul:

Physical books for review:

Today’s Publisher Appreciation Award goes to Tor Books, because five of these six review copies are from the various Tor teams:-) They have been so generous lately, so big shout out to all the lovely publicists who give me plenty to read!

I’m thrilled to have this lovely finished copy of The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward. I loved this so much!

I don’t often get surprise book mail these days so it’s always a good day when one hits my mailbox. From Tor.com I was excited to receive Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore, which I featured on Future Fiction a few months ago.

And with thanks to Tor, this gorgeous finished copy of Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki was another surprise arrival. I’m a little behind with my September reading so I haven’t read this yet, but look for a review in the next few weeks for sure.

So I’m one of the five people on the planet that still hasn’t read Dune, and this spin-off series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson is one I’m not familiar with. Dune: The Lady of Caladan is book two in this series, so I doubt I’ll be reading this any time soon, unfortunately. However, this hardcover is lovely, so big thanks to Tor for sending it my way.

Another beautiful finished hardcover came from Tor Nightfire: Slewfoot by Brom. I will also be reading this a bit late, but honestly, I don’t mind posting a review in October, since it’s more of a horror title anyway.

Finally, I received a surprise ARC of Temple of No God by H.M. Long with thanks to Titan Books! I really enjoyed the first book in the series, Hall of Smoke, and I can’t wait to dive into this one.

OK I guess four of these were surprise book mail after all:-D

Digital books for review:

Just a couple of new digital ARCs this week. First, I accepted Peel Back and See by Mike Thorn, a collection of short horror stories. Thank you to Mike for offering a review copy! This comes out next month so it will be perfect for a spooky Halloween read.

I also accepted Boys, Beasts & Men by Sam J. Miller. Sam has written a couple of novels that are on my TBR but I just haven’t had time to fit them in, so I’m looking forward to this short story collection. Many thanks to Tachyon Publications for the copy!

Are you planning to read any of these?

  1. Oh wow I hadn’t realized they were still putting out new Dune books. The stuff I’ve heard about the Brian Herbert ones have not been encouraging. I am very curious about Light From Uncommon Stars

  2. will

I’ve actually heard of most of these, which is new. Also, only eight books this week? What’ll you read come Friday?

  3. I love that cover and title for Light From Uncommon Stars. I hope the story lives up to them. 🙂 And I hope you enjoy Dune if you ever get to it. I’ve only read the first book, but I’ve read it twice now. Well worth trying, time permitting.

  4. LOL don’t worry, I haven’t read Dune either. I tried when I was in college, but just couldn’t get into, though back then I was also much less experienced with SFF so I might have simply felt overwhelmed. I definitely want to try picking it up again though, but maybe I’ll check out the new movie first!

  5. Looks like a lot of good books! There is really only one or two series from Tor, like Jennifer Lynn Armentrout’s books, that I always hope for and never seem to get physical copies of very often. It’s nice when you have a favorite publisher that does that! Enjoy your new books!

  6. Nice haul this week. The only one I know for sure I want to read is The Last House on Needless Street, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for your reviews to see if any of the others might be a good fit for me. 🙂
