Buffy’s Corner 6/6/21 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

So, California is running a Covid vaccine lottery, and anyone who has received at least one shot is entered into the pot. The idea is to get more people to get vaccinated, but I’m not sure this is the way to do it. Wouldn’t it be better to offer, say, $50 to all those people who are hesitating, rather than $1.5 million to one or two people? I mean come on. California has already awarded $50K to ten lucky people and I wasn’t one of them, ha ha. Are any other states doing this? It’s so bizarre to me.

I’m thinking of doing a Horror in July feature next month, since I have so many highly anticipated horror books coming out in the next several months. I’ve already got some non-horror July review books on my plate, so the month won’t be completely horror, but I think I need a change of pace here. I’ve been sort of “blah” about my blog lately and I feel like I’m stuck in a rut. Next month also marks my ten year blogging anniversary and I feel like I should be happier about that, but I’m not. Hmm. Let me know what you think!

Upcoming reviews:

Adrift is the fifth book in W. Michael Gear’s Donovan series, a science fiction story about a group of colonists trying to survive on the far away planet of Donovan, and I am having so much fun with these books! Donovan is well, to put it mildly, very dangerous, and the characters are faced with new deadly creatures in each book. Adrift takes things to the next level, which I didn’t know was possible! Look for my review tomorrow. And later in the week, I’ll be reviewing another June 1 release, The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo.

Upcoming reads:

These are probably the next three books I’m going to read. First The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton, a big change of pace for this blog! Ha ha should be fun. Then I’m very excited to dive into Rabbits by Terry Miles, which I’ve heard good things about. And after that, I have several big chonkers from Orbit to read this month, and For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten is going to be the first one I’ll tackle.

Other posts this week:

On Wednesday, it’s Future Fiction and three new cover reveals! The Friday Face-Off is “annoying covers” and look for my latest book haul post on Saturday:-)

Ten years! That’s a heck of a benchmark. Congratulations a bit early! I do understand about the blah feeling and hope you can find a freshness somehow. I appreciate yours reviews a lot.

In re: state Covid lotteries, yeah, Oregon is doing something similar: one prize of a million and one $10k prize in each county. Whatever works. Considering the money they’ve been dropping on ad buys, I’m guessing the vaccination lottery is small potatoes. And much cheaper than giving everybody $50, unfortunately.

  2. Sometimes trying something a tad different, like a feature/event/reading game/whatever can shake things up and renew the enthusiasm. Shaking things up can do wonders! And 10 years anniversary… Wow!!!

  3. Would certainly seem more sensible to spread the cash, I bet they could get company sponsors too – a free toaster with every shot or something. 😉
Congrats on your upcoming anniversary! One thing I’ve learnt after ten years of blogging is that’s it’s more important to please yourself than anyone else, you do you!

Wishing you a great reading week

  4. Wait! What! A historical romance! I so hope you like it! I am wanting to read that one! I think Horror in July sounds great! 🙂

  5. Gorgeous photo from your hubby, and happy blogiversary coming up, Tammy! My state isn’t doing a lottery but my place of work offered us a small incentive if we got the vaccine and shared that info with them. I like your idea for giving it to more of the people who are hesitant.

    • Tammy

That’s a great idea about your work offering an incentive. I hope more businesses do that:-)

  6. I really hope For the Wolf is going to be a good one. You know I’m looking forward to it as well. Also sometimes I feel blah about blogging too so you’re definitely not alone. I’ll be taking a little break soon (because small vacation) so maybe that’ll help me. This probably doens’t help you at all but my DMs are always open!

I think all bloggers feel blah now and then, and it doesn’t usually last long for me. I hope you enjoy your vacation!

  7. Yay for 10 years. I almost never read horror so it wouldn’t be my thing but if you enjoy it go for it. I tend to like my personal memes like Series on Saturday where I can come up with a new theme each month. It’s been challenging some months and easy other times, but it is always fun and allows me to read or revisit series of a particular.genre / type.

  8. A vaccine lottery?? And for people who alreadu had the first shot? But why these ones? Don’t they want to get the second shot anyway?? Weird LOL And I just bought For the Wolf two minutes ago!

    • Tammy

Right? That is the confusion with the lottery. It seems they’ve gone about it wrong, lol.

  9. 10 years! Just sticking with something that long is an accomplishment, but I understand it not seeming as big a deal as you’d think it would be. Maybe you’ll win that lottery and have even more to celebrate. 🙂 The Wisteria Society, eh? Well, I’m not entirely sure that’ll be my cup of tea (I prefer green these days), but I’ll stick around and see what you think of it. I’ve been tempted lately by some cozy mysteries that seem like they could be a bit cheesy, but I’m curious, so I certainly won’t judge anyone else branching out to something different. Have a great week, Tammy. And I like that avian silhouette from Moses! 🙂

    • Tammy

Thanks Todd! I think it’s good to branch out into different genres sometimes, if nothing else it confuses my blog readers, lol.

  10. I have The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton up on my next of books to buy!! Look forward to reading what you think of it.

And good luck winning the Lottery. 😀

  11. That is interesting about the lottery! I agree with you though, it seems like a better incentive would be to offer a smaller amount to encourage way more people to get the vacc. Hmm… I guess someone’s going to be happy though lol.

I like your idea of Horror in July! I’ve been wanting to read more horror myself (especially space horror) so I’ll keep a look out for that. also happy ten years!!!!

Adrift looks fabulous! I may need to start that series just so I can read it! 🙂

  12. Wishing you a great read! I’m going to be looking forward to your reviews of The Chosen & the Beautiful and For the Wolf — I started and stopped both, and would love to know if it’s worth pressing onward.

    • Tammy

I can understand why you’d stop reading The Chosen and the Beautiful, it’s very different. I’m going to keep going because I love her writing.

  13. will

Lottery winnings are heavily taxed, so the government would only really lose around two-thirds of the money. But that’s only of sums over $5000. But if you give everyone $50, the problem is that now everyone has $50. They get to keep most of that money (or all of it, I don’t know if it’s taxed or not), versus the 2/3 they’d get to keep otherwise.

I haven’t read Gear’s Donovan series, would you recommend it?

    • Tammy

OK too much math on the blog, Will;-) And yes, I highly recommend the Donovan series!

  14. I’m honestly not sure if my state is doing anything like that or not. Not that I’ve heard of anyway but I agree that it would make more sense to do something smaller and spread that money around a bit. Congrats on 10 years of blogging! That’s such an incredible milestone and I love your idea for a horror month. I don’t read much horror but I think all of the horror I have read in recent years are books I’ve read about on your blog. 🙂

    • Tammy

Oh cool, thanks:-) I just want to stop and read all my upcoming horror books that I’ve been waiting patiently to read, and I figured I’ll find a particular month to do that in (without being too obvious and waiting for October:-))

  15. I think a change of pace is sometimes a good thing so your horror month sounds perfect. I sometimes have to just completely change tack with my reading and pick up thrillers or books set way back when. I find this helps me a lot I would love to see what horror you come up with.
The lottery idea, I can see the thinking behind it but it seems odd that it’s for people getting their second shot – why not offer it to people who haven’t had the first short and are reluctant to do so?
    Lynn 😀

  16. Horror in July sounds great! I can’t wait. Our state is doing something similar except our Governor is using his pet bulldog, who often appears with him in his addresses, to try to convince people. It’s called Do It For Babydog contest. They are having several larger money giveaways and you can also win lifetime hunting and fishing licenses (go redneck state!), trips to our state parks, decked out trucks (again, go redneck state, but I’d take one) and something else. The nice thing is you could click the ones you want entered into. I guess whatever they can do to get people vaccinated is a plus.
