Future Fiction #127 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

After a month of highlighting nothing but fantasy books for Wyrd and Wonder, I’m excited to share three upcoming science fiction releases!

For someone with January Cole’s background, running security at a fancy hotel shouldn’t be much of a challenge.

Except the Paradox is no ordinary hotel. Here, the ultra-wealthy guests are costumed for a dozen different time periods, all anxiously waiting to catch their “flights” to the past. And proximity to the timeport makes for an interesting stay. The clocks run backwards on occasion—and, rumor has it, ghosts stroll the halls.

Now, January’s job is about to get a whole lot harder. Because the U.S. government is getting ready to privatize time-travel technology—and a handful of trillionaires have just arrived to put down their bids.

Meanwhile there’s a blizzard rolling in, and the timestream’s acting strange. Which means nobody’s leaving until further notice.

And there’s a murderer on the loose.

Or at least, that’s what January suspects. Except the corpse in question is one that somehow only she can see. And the accidents stalking their prestigious guests…well, the only way a killer could engineer those is by operating invisibly and in plain sight, all at once. Which is surely impossible.

There’s a reason January can glimpse what others can’t. But her ability is also destroying her grip on reality—and forcing her to confront secrets of her own.

Because here at the Paradox Hotel, the past is waiting around every corner.

The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart. Releases in February 2022 from Ballantine Books. I’m so excited that Rob Hart finally has a new book coming out! I really enjoyed The Warehouse a few years ago, and this one sounds really crazy. Time travelling and a locked room mystery? I’m in!

At the edge of the solar system, no one can hear you scream.

The Aurora, a luxury space-liner destined for a cruise of the solar system, has been missing for twenty years. Among the hundreds of presumed dead were passengers from society’s finest – celebrities, tech giants, influencers. Every last one… vanished.

So when Claire’s crew picks up an emergency signal in deep space, the long-lost Aurora is the last ship they expect to find. The salvage claim could be their best chance at extraordinary wealth, but it might mean missing their transport back home, and nobody can stand another minute out in the darkest corner of the universe – nobody, except Claire.

Once onboard the ship, the crew realizes something is terribly wrong. Unspeakable horrors lurk in every shadow of the massive ship, and soon they each start experiencing violent hallucinations.

Claire must fight to keep her sanity and get her crew back to safety – before they all meet the same ghastly fate as the Aurora passengers.

Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes. Releases in January 2022 from Tor Nightfire. I love the sound of the sci-fi/horror, and I can hardly wait for January!

In his adult novel debut, Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and NAACP Image Award finalist and ALA Alex and New England Book Award winner Tochi Onyebuchi delivers a sweeping science fiction epic in the vein of Samuel R. Delany and Station Eleven

In the 2050s, Earth has begun to empty. Those with the means and the privilege have departed the great cities of the United States for the more comfortable confines of space colonies. Those left behind salvage what they can from the collapsing infrastructure. As they eke out an existence, their neighborhoods are being cannibalized. Brick by brick, their houses are sent to the colonies, what was once a home now a quaint reminder for the colonists of the world that they wrecked.

A primal biblical epic flung into the future, Goliath weaves together disparate narratives—a space-dweller looking at New Haven, Connecticut as a chance to reconnect with his spiraling lover; a group of laborers attempting to renew the promises of Earth’s crumbling cities; a journalist attempting to capture the violence of the streets; a marshal trying to solve a kidnapping—into a richly urgent mosaic about race, class, gentrification, and who is allowed to be the hero of any history.

Goliath by Tochi Onyebuchi. Releases in January 2022 from Tor.com. This sounds so good, and it’s reminding me a bit of the structure of Riot Baby, which I really enjoyed. FYI: this is a full length novel from Tor.com!

  1. I’m all about time travel so The Paradox Hotel sounds good to me! With Dead Silence this part of the synopsis got me freaked out already: Unspeakable horrors lurk in every shadow of the massive ship, and soon they each start experiencing violent hallucinations. Because yeah that sounds FUN lol And Goliath is probably my favorite out of these three. It sounds awesome!

  2. I could see myself trying any of them but I’m most curious about Dead Silence. That mix of sci-fi and horror can work really well.

I’ve had a lot of success with the sci-fi/horror combo, so I have high hopes for Dead Silence:-)

  3. I LOVE the sound of The Paradox Hotel and Goliath! As ever, you manage to bring the coolest of the upcoming releases first, Tammy:)).

  4. Haha, I was debating whether to feature Paradox Hotel or Dead Silence today, went with the sci-fi horror. But it totally slipped my notice that it’s the same Rob Hart who wrote The Warehouse!

  5. Will

The first two of these sound the best, but all three sound potentially good! The only problem is that they’re too far in the future. I have waaay too much time to get excited only to forget about them completely haha

Oh my actual god this is an EXCELLENT Future Fiction. I’ve added them all to my TBR, and The Paradox Hotel and Dead Silence in particular sound like exactly the kind of thing I want to be reading right now. Fuming we’ve got to wait til next year!
