Future Fiction #90 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three exciting new books, take a look:

She swallowed a star, and the Sisterhood called her the Eater.

Elfreda Raughn will avoid pregnancy if it kills her, and one way or another, it will kill her. Though she’s able to stomach the gruesome day-to-day duties, the reality of preserving the Order’s magical bloodline horrifies her, but the Sisters of Aytrium have sworn to pay a price for the safety of their nation.

Elfreda wants out, whatever the cost.

So when a shadowy cabal approaches her with an offer of escape, she leaps at the opportunity. As their spy, she gains access to the highest reaches of the Order, and enters a glittering world of opulent parties, subtle deceptions, and unexpected bloodshed.

A phantasmagorical indictment of hereditary power, Star Eater takes readers deep into a perilous and uncanny world where even the most powerful women are forced to choose what sacrifices they will make, so that they might have any choice at all.

Star Eater by Kerstin Hall. Releases in June 2021 from Tor.com. I’m so happy to see a new cover reveal from Tor.com! And this one’s a beauty. This story sounds really different, and I sort of wish it weren’t so far away!

They call it Stormland: a sprawling, largely abandoned region of the southeastern coast of the USA, where climate change’s extreme weather conditions have brought about a “perfect storm” of perpetual tempests; where hurricane-strength storms return day after day, 365 days a year.

The heart of Stormland is Charleston, South Carolina, a flooded ruin where hundreds of people remain for their own peculiar reasons; where thugs prey on the weak, and a strangely benevolent cult tries to keep everyone insanely sane. Here, plutocratic evil takes advantage of Stormland’s lawlessness to cultivate a weirdly puppeted theater of cruelty.

Swept into the turbulent vortex of Stormland is an unlikely duo—a former serial killer and a former US Marshal—who must work together to bring light to America’s late twenty-first century heart of darkness.

A cyberpunk detective thriller set in a maelstrom of climatic upheaval, classism, and corrupt power, Stormland paradoxically dramatizes the resilience of the human spirit

Stormland by John Shirley. Releases in April 2021 from Blackstone Publishing. I’m so excited to see a new book from John Shirley! I was a big fan of Shirley back in the day, and I’ve met him at book signings several times. This “cyberpunk detective thriller” has my name written all over it!

When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology.

Angrboda’s story begins where most witches’ tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Their union produces three unusual children, each with a secret destiny, who Angrboda is keen to raise at the edge of the world, safely hidden from Odin’s all-seeing eye. But as Angrboda slowly recovers her prophetic powers, she learns that her blissful life—and possibly all of existence—is in danger.

With help from the fierce huntress Skadi, with whom she shares a growing bond, Angrboda must choose whether she’ll accept the fate that she’s foreseen for her beloved family…or rise to remake their future. From the most ancient of tales this novel forges a story of love, loss, and hope for the modern age.

The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec. Releases in February 2021 from Ace Books. This sounds fabulous! And I love the cover. I’m always hunting for new stories involving witches, and I love that this is based on Norse mythology.

I’m not sure how I feel about Star Eater. I’m curious what pregnancy has to do with it. One part of the blurb seems disconnected from the other. Tor usually has good stuff though. Great picks!

  2. I’m most curious about The Witch’s Heart. The cover and theme remind me of Circe, though this one is Norse instead of Greek mythology. Sounds very promising.

  3. Tor just goes on going from strength to strength! I love the sound of Star Eater – and Stormland looks stormingly good, too. As ever you have an awesome choice of books, Tammy:))

  4. Great selections this week, as always I fear my TBR pile exploding LOL. I am super interested in Star Eater because of the whole women’s reproductive rights thing. I also think The Witch’s Heart sounds exactly like my type of book. Will have to keep my eye out for those!

It’s been a long time since I’ve read him, so who knows whether my taste was good back then, lol. I’m mostly curious to see how he writes today:-)

I went WOW when I saw the cover for the Star Eater and the blurb to add to that — wow again, I hope that is as brilliant as it o7nds!

  6. So much yes to The Witch’s Heart. I really want to read that one, too! It sounds fantastic. I’m always a sucker for classic Loki in Norse mythology, and you combine that with witches? Not sure I could think of anything more perfect than that!
