Future Fiction #86 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three very exciting new books to share today, here we go!

NEVADA, 1872. Out of the merciless 40-Mile Desert, a stranger appears in the town of Golgotha, home to the blessed and the damned. He carries with him an innocent victim of a horrible massacre and a dire warning for Sheriff Jon Highfather. The conflict between the Indian nations and Mormon settlers has been brewing for years, and now the spirits of the fallen Indian dead have begun to rise to join in the fight.

Deputy Mutt’s old nemesis, Snake-Man, returns to begin a final bloody war against the Whites, purging them from the land forever. An insane U.S. General with his own genocidal agenda sees the coming conflict as a perfect solution to the “Indian problem,” and, as is often the case, the people of Golgotha find themselves caught in the middle.

Mayor Harry Pratt’s leadership of the town is challenged and he is threatened with the revelation of his greatest secrets, and with a betrayal that could utterly destroy him.

The hungry, antediluvian terror imprisoned under the Argent Mine seeks release to devour the world through the most innocent of souls—Auggie Shultz and his wife, Gillian’s, newborn. Not only is the fate of an innocent soul at stake, but the fate of all life.

The Ghost Dance Judgement is the fourth book in the Golgotha series from R.S. Belcher, the author of The Brotherhood of the Wheel series and The Queen’s Road.

The Ghost Dance Judgement (Golgotha #4) by R.S. Belcher. Releases in October 2020 from Falstaff Books. I was beyond excited when Rod revealed the cover of his upcoming book last week, and of course it’s earned the top spot on this week’s Future Fiction. Don’t you love it? Anyone who has followed my reviews knows Rod is one of my favorite writers, and one of the most consistent writers I know. Even better, he has a deal for the next three books in the series (Golgotha 4-6) with Falstaff Books, so there’s a lot to look forward to! I’ll be doing a guest post soon with Rod to celebrate the release of The Ghost Dance Judgement, so keep your eyes peeled!

Two best friends create a computer that can see one year into the future. But what they can’t predict is how it will tear their friendship–and society–apart.

Ben Boyce and Teddy Chaudry are outsiders struggling to find their place in Silicon Valley. But when Ben reads Teddy’s graduate dissertation about an obscure application for quantum computing, he has a vision of a revolutionary new technology: a computer that can see forward through time by communicating with its future self.

The two friends quit their jobs and team up to form a business, building a company that will deliver their groundbreaking device to consumers around the world. Rival tech giants try to steal their innovation, while government agencies attempt to bury it–but Ben and Teddy are helped by their own cutting-edge technology, staying a step ahead of the competition and responding to challenges before they arise.

As the tension mounts, Ben and Teddy’s friendship begins to fracture under the weight of ambition, jealousy, and greed. Most frightening of all, they discover the dark side of the machine they’ve created–the ways in which viewing the future sets them on a path toward unavoidable disaster of epic, apocalyptic proportions. Unless they can disrupt the technological system they’ve created, there won’t be any future at all.

Told through emails, texts, transcripts, and blog posts, this bleeding-edge tech thriller chronicles the social costs of innovation and asks how far you’d be willing to go to protect the ones you love–even from themselves.

The Future is Yours by Dan Frey. Releases in February 2021 from Del Rey Books. I am seriously getting Three Laws Lethal vibes from this blurb, even though the subject matter of the two books is completely different. I think this sounds amazing!

From award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst, a standalone epic fantasy set in a brand-new world of towering mountains and sparkling cities, in which a band of aging warriors have a second chance to defeat dark magic and avenge a haunting loss.

Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklor—a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived.

Since then, Kreya, the group’s leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrifice—for each day he lives, she will live one less.

She’d rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burned—as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives.

But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead don’t rest in peace after all.

Five warriors—one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesn’t stop just because someone once said, “the end.”

The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst. Releases in March 2021 from Harper Voyager. I loved Durst’s last book, Race the Sands, and I’m so excited to read something else she’s written. This story sounds fantastic, and bonus, it’s a stand alone!

  1. Oh wow – all of these. I want them all. You’re single handedly breaking my tbr. I need to catch up with the Golgotha series.
    Lynn 😀

  2. Wow, he’s already on the 4th Golgotha book before I’ve read the first… But I’ll get there one day! 🙂 I love the sound of The Bone Maker, and though I’ve yet to read Race the Sands I do recall how much you enjoyed it. It’s still in my TBR because of that.

  3. Race the Sands didn’t really grab my attention, but I loved the first two books of The Queens of Renthia (I wasn’t a fan of how it all ended). The Bone Maker definitely sounds ,more to my tastes.

  4. How did I miss the cover for The Bone Maker? It’s gorgeous and it sounds great as well. The Future is Yours sounds good as well but it’s giving me Middlegame vibes which makes no sense because I’ve not read Middlegame. And Man, top spot for sure! I guess I ought to see if Book Outlet has those Belcher books anymore because I think I’ll want this series.

  5. Will

OooOoo Golgotha Four… through six! Can’t wait! I was just wondering whether or not he was done with them. I’ve only recently heard of Falstaff, so I’m assuming they’re new. Hopefully this is just the start of things 🙂

  6. Sarah

The Bone Maker sounds excellent! I have not read Sarah Beth Durst before. And I am ashamed to say this because I meant to tackle it this year, but I still need to read The Six Gun Tarot.

I say read anything that Rod Belcher has written. He’s an author that deserves way more attention!

The Bone Maker gave me the chills — and I love it! It also sounds like some great worldbuilding in there, and rules of magic. The Future is Yours is impressively creative I think — I am curious as to how it all comes apart for them.

    • Tammy

I’m curious about The Bone Maker as well, hopefully the worldbuilding will be as good as it seems:-)

  8. Well after becoming a fan of Sarah Beth Durst earlier this year I’m definitely interested in The Bone Maker. Also a new Belcher–I’m sure that will be a fun ride, hope you enjoy!

  9. A new Belcher Golgotha story. Nice! I’ve only read the first one but need to get moving on the others. I’m especially loving the sound of Queen of Swords. Love that cover for the Future Is Yours as well…

  10. Oh, whoa, back up. I’m sorry. How did I not hear about Golgotha before?! And why don’t I own them? Those covers! I need them in my life. And they sound so freaking good! Aw man, The Bone Maker sounds fabulous. You’re killing my TBR this week, but I can’t even be mad about it. xD
