Over-Booked [124] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

This week I have a nice, balanced mix of review copies and purchases. I went a little crazy as far as book buying goes. I haven’t really bought many new books since March, but for some reason both authors on social media and fellow bloggers have convinced me to buy some books I’ve been wanting to read but just haven’t had time. First, here are the books I received for review:

Physical books for review:

First up, I received a surprise package from Saga Press with a couple of August releases. I’ve already read a couple of reviews for The First Sister by Linden A. Lewis, and I’ll admit I’m intrigued. Has anyone read this one yet? Also in the package was The Vanished Queen by Lisbeth Campbell, another book on my TBR. With so many August releases, it’s hard to fit them all in (well, it’s actually IMPOSSIBLE), but I’m happy to have these copies. Huge thanks to Saga/Gallery Press!

Once in a while, I get a surprise package from Big Honcho Media, and one just arrived this past week, with a lovely finished copy of The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell. There was also a cute notebook/pen included. I don’t know much about this book, has anyone read it yet? Thank you Big Honcho Media and St. Martin’s Press:-D

The Hollow Ones by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. I’ve seen some mixed reviews for this, and what I’m hearing is that a lot of readers who loved del Toro’s other books have been disappointed with this one. I’m still hoping to read it this month, as I did request this review copy. Thank you to Grand Central Publishing:-)

Finally in the physical stack, two exciting books from Tor: Automatic Reload by Ferrett Steinmetz and Architects of Memory by Karen Osborne. I’m really excited about both of these August releases, so expect to see reviews here later this month! Thank you Tor Books!

Digital books for review:

I was really trying to stay off NetGalley, but you know how that goes, lol. I am being very picky, so I only requested/downloaded books that were already on my TBR. Well, mostly.

First up, two of my most anticipated Fall books: How the Multiverse Got Its Revenge by K. Eason. I absolutely LOVED How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse, so you can imagine my excitement to read the sequel! And as a devoted Craig DiLouie fan, I’m super excited to read his next horror book which revolves around a cult, The Children of Red Peak.

I downloaded a trio of Tor.com novels/novellas this past week: Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire. This is the 6th book in her Wayward Children series, and I can’t wait! First, Become Ashes by K.M. Szpara is one I’m hesitantly looking forward to. I didn’t completely enjoy Szpara’s last book, Docile, but even still, I definitely want to see what the author will do as a follow up. And I’m eager to read something new by Sylvain Neuvel, and I’m hoping A History of What Comes Next will do the trick.

We Hear Voices by Evie Green was a horror story I featured on a Future Fiction post earlier in the year, so that’s the main reason I requested it.

I was pitched this awesome sounding horror novel, Midnight Horror Show by Ben Lathrop, coming this Fall from Crystal Lake Publishing. Unfortunately (I’m seeing this happen more and more these days), it isn’t up on Goodreads yet. I’m linking to the author’s website, where you can read the blurb.

Finally, I accepted a digital galley of Spellbreaker by Charlie N. Holmberg. I’ve read a couple of her books and I enjoyed them, so I’m curious to see what she’ll do next.

Big thanks to Berkley Books, Redhook, Tor.com, Crystal Lake Publishing and 47North:-D

Purchases:

All of these are books I want to read but didn’t get review copies for, so now I’ve added them to my library to read when I have extra time. I’ve wanted to read Bunny by Mona Awad since I saw it on Edelweiss, and now that’s it’s actually won a few awards, and it’s also just been released in paperback, I decided to finally get myself a copy.

I’ve been hearing so much buzz about P. Djèlí Clark so I decided I’d better see what all the fuss is about. I bought copies of The Haunting of Tram Car 015 and The Black God’s Drums so I can catch up before Ringshot comes out!

I have an eARC of Lobizona by Romina Garber, but I saw Romina showing off the hardcover on social media so I immediately bought a copy! It’s so pretty, both the cover and the gold imprinted boards under the dustjacket. Plus, I’ve been hearing great things about it.

And a couple of impulse buys, just because I’ve heard other bloggers raving about both of these: Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay and Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby. Let me know if you’ve read any of these!

I have a few other books on order that haven’t arrived, so I’ll share those in my next book haul.

And that’s my haul for now! I’d love to know if you’ve read any of these:-D

  1. I’ve been curious about Survivor Song, but the one that stands out to me in this list is The Children of Red Peak because of its cover.

Isn’t that cover cool? I have a think for upside down covers, and I think this one is really well done.

Oh wow!! I can’t wait to hear what you think about The Children of Red Peak. It’s going to be hard to wait, I might have to read it early!

  2. Looks like a ton of great stuff this time around. I’ve gotten Spellbreaker as well of course and I’m really curious to see how that one is. I’m really curious about First, Become Ashes as well although I do still have to read Kellan’s first book! 🙂

  3. To my surprise, I had a good time with The Hollow Ones! Though I admit, I didn’t have high expectations going in due to all the mixed reviews it was getting 😛 I wasn’t crazy about the way it ended, but on the whole I found it enjoyable. I’m also glad you’re so excited for How the Multiverse Got Its Revenge because I’ll need your review to decide if I want to continue, I’m still on the fence after the first one!

  4. The cover for Lobizona is absolutely fabulous – no wonder you got hold of the paperback! I haven’t read any of these and they are not in my TBR stack either. So I’m sticking my fingers in my ears and lah-ing very loudly in the hopes that I don’t crumble and buy yet MORE books!

  5. When you said you “went a little crazy” buying, you did mean little. 😉 I was thinking you’d have a huge purchased haul, but nah, you’re still doing okay.

Looks like you got some great new books! I tried to get Spellbreaker, but I requested it forever ago on NG and it just wallowed and now it’s on wish, so it’s looking like that one’s not happening for me. xD I’ll have to live vicariously through your review until I can get my hands on it after it comes out. 😉

Oooh, thank you for reminding me about The Black God’s Drums ! I bought a copy forever ago and keep forgetting to pick it up. Dangers of buying e-books, because out of sight, out of mind.

I think when I was putting the post together I was like “Wow I really bought a lot of books!” But I guess not?? I may squeeze The Black God’s Drums in soon, since it’s so short.

  6. These book haul posts are killing my tbr. I’m so greedy and want all the books – although I am trying to be careful. It doesn’t always work though.
    Lynn 😀
