Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D
So last week I found out that someone in my office had tested positive for COVID, so we all had to be tested before we could return to work. That made for a very interesting week! I have a feeling a lot of people are going to start experiencing this if they haven’t already. First, I had four glorious days off work and I’m not sad about it at all! Second, it’s much harder to get a test than you think, or at least that was my experience. Without any symptoms, it’s almost impossible to be tested, although the media makes you think it’s easy and anyone can just walk in and take a test. Luckily, everyone in my office (there are only six of us) managed to get tested and we all came back with negative results. And the person who tested positive is fine and just waiting until his quarantine is over so he can come back. Overall, things went well for us, but it was a pain in the butt and I’m hoping we don’t have to do it again soon. But I am grateful that my company takes the virus seriously and is concerned about our health. Wear your masks, people!
Here are a few of Hubby’s recent photos (click on them for bigger image):
I absolutely love the mushroom photo (added as an ode to Mexican Gothic, which I reviewed this week!). The cat is a neighborhood cat. And the parrots and egrets were taken down at the LA River. Burbank has huge flocks of wild parrots, which is pretty cool. Once in a while a flock will come to one of the trees in our backyard and hang around for a few days.
Upcoming reviews:
It’s finally happening. I’m posting my review of We Ride the Storm by Devin Madson tomorrow, even if it kills me! Lots of readers loved this book, but it was a real struggle to get through it, I have to admit. I definitely have mixed feelings about it. I’ll try to explain why in my review, so if you’re curious, please stop by. And Thursday I should have a review up of The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho.
Upcoming reads:
I should have started Stormblood by Jeremy Szal by the time you read this (finally!), and after that my next read will be Opium and Absinthe by Lydia Kang. Looking forward to both of these for very different reasons:-D
The usual memes…
I’m very excited to share my Most Anticipated Books of 2020 – Third Quarter on Tuesday! I love these quarterly posts, and can you believe we’re already halfway through this year? On Wednesday, as usual, check in for three new Future Fiction picks, and the Friday Face-Off this week is “tentacles”!! And Wednesday is July 1st, so check back to see What’s On My Plate! Hint: a ton of books.
In case you missed…
My posts from last week:
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones – Review
Best Books of the Year So Far – 2020
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – Review
Over-Booked [122] – A Book Haul Post
I think it’s hard to get a good cat photo. They’re always twitching or dashing or grooming or something. But your husband got a good one! Opium and Absinthe looks like an interesting read.

I think you’re right, thanks! I do love the cat photo:-)
I also love that mushroom photo. There’s something almost sad about it, this single mushroom, toppled and alone. And beautiful background choice for the cat photo, helps bring out those eyes. We Ride the Storm seems one I might enjoy, so I’m curious to hear about the struggle with it. Looking forward to the othe reviews, as well. Have a great week, and keep staying healthy!
So many people love We Ride the Storm, so I’m sure my negative review won’t make a dent, lol.
I’m very curious to read your review for We Ride the Storm: the premise sounded quite interesting, but for some reason (i.e. my “book vibes”) I did not request it and waited to read some thoughts from my fellow bloggers first. The struggle you mention seems to go hand in hand with my decision to wait… Looking forward to your post!! 🙂

Hopefully I can explain myself in my review. Negative reviews are so hard for me!
Glad you’re all doing ok! That mushroom photo is excellent.
Thanks! The mushroom is my fave:-)
The photos are great. Very interesting to hear about your COVID testing and I’m glad they do take it seriously. YAY for 4 days off. Federal support for testing is ending June 30th which is insane. The federal govt is not handling this at all except for misinformation and the states are all doing different things. Why did masks have to become political? They are one of the best tools we have. ~end rant Stay safe and well!

I didn’t know that about Federal support ending, that’s awful! This country is such a mess:-/
That must have been stressful though! I am glad you turned up negative. And I love the cat picture.
Thanks Sophie:-)
Oh gosh! Glad you and your coworkers are doing alright! Also, the pictures you included are awesome!! Love the egrets!
I’m still shocked we have egrets here in the city, lol.
He is very good at taking photos! Wish I was…lol. I have a camera and I need to start playing around with it. Glad everything worked out okay at work!
Thanks Stormi!
Looking forward to your thoughts on We Ride the Storm! It worked for me, but I’m curious to hear where it fell flat for you

Maybe I just read it at the wrong time, but I wasn’t really feeling it:-/
Love the mushroom and cat photos.
I’m glad you and your coworkers are doing okay. I’m not looking forward to returning to working in the office for such reasons and all the caution I’d have to take all the time because I know I’ll probably forget something, like not to touch my face.
If you’re working at home, I say stay there as long as you can!
Well, that’s some work drama that I’m glad worked out for the best! Stay healthy! I’m hoping to tackle We Ride the Storm at the beginning of July!
Curious to hear what you think of it!
I am glad to hear you are OK, even if it was a big pain to be tested (here in Italy is the same, by the way) and I am looking forward to your reviews!
And the pics are awesome! The fungi’s one is so beautiful but the parrots are adorable!!
I love the parrots too! Love birds:-)
I have a black cat so I’m a big fan of hubby’s cat photo. The mushroom one made me cringe just a little bit, not because it’s not a great photo, but because it immediately made me think of Mexican Gothic, lol.
I’m glad to hear your Covid test came back negative. That had to be so stressful. That’s exactly my fear once we are told we can no longer work from home.

Hopefully you can continue to work at home for a while:-)
I’m glad you are alright! I just learned we have three co-workers out with the virus. I didn’t have to get tested as they were in a different department but where I work, we are all over the place. I do worry!

It’s definitely worrisome! I can’t wait for this to be over…
Well, you’ve been tested at least which is good. All the drama – when will 2020 give us a break.
Lovely pictures – I love the cat, such lovely eyes.

I’m so glad you guys are all negative and safe. I feel fortunate my work is taking things seriously, too. I am hearing stories from other people who aren’t as fortunate. 🙁
Glad that the rest of the office tested negative – that’s one of my biggest fears right now since my boss made us all come back to the office full time. My boss is such a slimeball that if someone tested positive I bet he wouldn’t even tell the rest of us. He announced this week that he was getting a test on Thursday but didn’t say why and when asked ‘just because he feels like getting tested’. I trust that man as far as I can throw him. Why get tested unless you’ve been exposed or think you might have it? I’ve been sanitizing like mad.
