Future Fiction #73 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

One exciting sequel, and two series starters, all sci-fi this week, take a look:

Rory Thorne must use the fairy blessings gifted to her to change the multiverse in the second book in this space opera duology.

After avoiding an arranged marriage, thwarting a coup, and inadvertently kick-starting a revolution, Rory Thorne is no longer a princess, but a space pirate.

Her new life is interrupted when Rory and her crew–former royal bodyguards, Thorsdottir and Zhang, and co-conspirator Jaed–encounter an abandoned ship registered under a false name, seemingly fallen victim to attack. As they investigate, they find evidence of vicious technology and arithmancy, alien and far beyond known capabilities.

The only answer to all the destruction is the mysterious, and unexpected, cargo: a rose plant. One that reveals themself to be sentient–and designed as a massive biological weapon. Rose seeks to escape their intended fate, and Rory and her friends must act fast when the attackers return with their superior weaponry.

As the situation gains the attention of an increasing number of alien races, Rory finds herself acting as negotiator and diplomat, in order to save Rose and her friends–and avert an unprecedented war.

How the Multiverse Got Its Revenge (The Thorne Chronicles #2) by K. Eason. Releases in October 2020 from DAW Books. The author just revealed this cover, and I’m not even sure it’s up on Goodreads yet. But I couldn’t be more excited! I loved the first book in the series, How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse, and I can hardly wait to see what Eason does with these characters next:-D

Even before our kind started using tools, the Kibsu have been with us, guiding humanity, teaching us, molding us.

As long as we follow the rules.

The Kibsu had five rules to guide the gradual elevation of our species:

1. Preserve the knowledge.
2. Survive at all cost.
3. Don’t draw attention to yourself.
4. Don’t leave a trace.
5. There can never be three for too long.

But when their enemy got too close, the Kibsu add one more:

6. Fear the Tracker: always run, never fight.

But now, during the terrors of the Great War, the Trackers are closing in, and for Mia and Sarah, running might no longer be an option.

A History of What Comes Next (A History of What Comes Next #1) by Sylvain Neuvel. Releases in February 2021 from Tor.com. I’m really excited to see a new series from Neuvel, author of the Themis Files! This blurb is sort of vague, but I’m curious:-D

A deadly competition for the throne will determine more than just the fate of the empire in this riveting duology opener, perfect for fans of The Hunger GamesAurora Rising, and Three Dark Crowns.

Alyssa Farshot has spent her whole life trying to outrun her family legacy. Her mother sacrificed everything to bring peace to the quadrant, and her uncle has successfully ruled as emperor for decades. But the last thing Alyssa wants is to follow in their footsteps as the next in line for the throne. Why would she choose to be trapped in a palace when she could be having wild adventures exploring a thousand-and-one planets in her own ship?

But when Alyssa’s uncle becomes gravely ill, his dying wish surprises the entire galaxy. Instead of naming her as his successor, he calls for a crownchase, the first in seven centuries. Representatives from each of the empire’s prime families—including Alyssa—are thrown into a race to find the royal seal, which has been hidden somewhere in the empire. The first to find the seal wins the throne.

Alyssa’s experience as an explorer makes her the favorite to win the crown she never wanted. And though she doesn’t want to be empress, her duty to her uncle compels her to participate in this one last epic adventure. But when the chase turns deadly, it’s clear that more than just the fate of the empire is at stake. Alyssa is on her most important quest yet—and only time will tell if she’ll survive it.

Crownchasers (Crownchasers #1) by Rebecca Coffindaffer. Releases in September 2020 from HarperTeen.  I love the sound of this YA science fiction, and that cover really jumps out at you, right?

There is an element of Sleeping Beauty to the Thorne Chronicles, although I wouldn’t call it a true retelling. But it’s SO GOOD. I highly recommend it:-)

  1. I’m absolutely planning to read the new Sylvain Neuvel! It kind of doesn’t matter so much to me what it’s about — I just loved the Themis books so much. I suppose I really need to read the first Rory Thorne book finally!

  2. As vague as the blurb is I’m also curious about A History of What Comes Next. I love that title. And I haven’t yet read anything by the author, so this book might be a good one for changing that.

He’s really good, and I think starting with a new series is definitely the way to go:-)

  3. How to you always get such cool books??? I love the sound of Crownchasers, Tammy – and once again, thank you so much for sharing:)

My trick is that I’m always checking out publisher catalogs on Edelweiss and when I see something I’m interested in, I immediately add it to my Goodreads “want to read” list. Then I can spot pretty quickly when new covers are revealed, and that’s pretty much how I find them.

  4. I love that title–How the Multiverse Got Its Revenge. I haven’t yet read the first book, but it’s on my wish list. I’ll have to add the sequel too. I’ve been wanting to read Neuvel’s other series. This new one sounds good too! Crown Chasers is another great sounding one. So many great books to look forward to! I hope you get to read them all and love them.
