Over-Booked [116] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I’m so glad it’s finally the weekend! How about everyone else out there? This was a short work week, since Monday was a holiday here in the U.S., yet it felt like the longest week in the world. Hopefully I’ll have lots of reading time this weekend, since I’m going to need it to catch up. Lots of cool books came my way this week, and here they are:

Physical books for review:

I’m super excited for this first batch! First up, Picard: The Best Last Hope by Una McCormack, with thanks to Pocket Books for the review copy. This is the prequel to the new Picard TV show, which I haven’t watched yet. The big question is, will I enjoy it without watching the show?

Sons of War is the start of a new series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, whose name you may recognize from his very popular Hell Divers series. I didn’t even know about this book, but I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve been meaning to read Hell Divers for a few years now and just haven’t been able to pull that off. Now I can get in on the ground floor with this new one. Huge thanks to Blackstone Publishing for such an awesome surprise!

Well, what do you know? I didn’t realize until right now that I have both upcoming books from husband/wife writing couple Kathleen Gear and W. Michael Gear! (This was not planned) And both books are being published by DAW, how cool is that? Kathleen’s new book is Cries From the Lost Island and comes out next month. It sounds really good, a combo of murder mystery and ancient Egyptian history. And since we’re talking about the Gears, let’s skip over to Mr. Gear’s book, the fourth in his excellent Donovan series, Unreconciled. I’m so excited to dive back into this world! I had no idea I was getting this book, so huge thanks to DAW Books for the surprise:-D

Another couple of surprises arrived from Tor Books this week. First, The Sin in the Steel by Ryan van Loan was a Future Fiction pick a few months ago, so I was very happy to get this ARC. And I’m also thrilled to have The Queen of Raiders by Sarah Kozloff in my hands, even though I still need to catch up with the first book. This is the second book in her The Nine Realms series, and all four books will be out this year. Thank you Tor:-D

With thanks to Wunderkind PR, I received a finished copy of The Killing Fog by Jeff Wheeler. I’m not sure I have time to read this right now, but it really sounds good, so maybe later on I can fit it in.

Ballistic by Marko Kloos is book #2 in The Paladium Wars series, but unfortunately I have not read the first book. It sounds really good, though! Big thanks to 47North for the ARC!

Kaye Publicity offered me a review copy of Witches of Ash & Ruin by E. Latimer, and this is already on my TBR so I’m anxious to check it out!

From Tor I received a finished paperback of Black Leviathan by Bernd Perplies, a book I’ve heard really good things about. Time permitting, I’d love to give this a chance. Thank you Tor:-)

And finally, I won a copy of We Are Monsters by Brian Kirk during a blog tour stop, with thanks to the publisher, Flame Tree Press, and Stormi!

Digital books for review:

Big thanks to author Brian D. Anderson for hooking me up with a NetGalley download of A Chorus of Fire, the next book in his Sorcerer’s Song series, after The Bard’s Blade. This book isn’t out until September, so I probably won’t be getting to it right away, but I am excited!

More thanks goes to publisher Unsung Stories who sent over Aliya Whiteley’s next book, Greensmith, which sounds AMAZING! It’s the story of a bio-librarian, who cares for a seed bank, until the day she’s whisked away by a mysterious man called the Horticulturist.

With thanks to Serial Box, I’ll be listening to another audio book, yay! Machina is their latest science fiction serialized story, and the author line-up is fantastic: Fran Wilde, Malka Older, Curtis C. Chen and Martha Wells. The audio is narrated by Natalie Naudus. I’m starting this today and there are ten episodes. My plan is to listen to the whole thing and then post a review.

Finally, this is a purchase, not a review book, but I couldn’t resist buying Cheryl Low’s self-published Hellbound in a Hurry. It’s only $2.99 on Amazon, and if you are a horror lover I highly recommend Cheryl’s books:-D

And that’s my book haul this week. Are you planning to read any of these books?

I need to catch up with review books before I read Hellbound in a Hurry, but I’m very excited to get to it.

  1. I’ve been thinking a lot about whether to give Witches of Ash & Ruin a chance at some point because I heard about it just a couple of days ago and I think it sounds super interesting! Now I”ll wait to know your opinion. I hope you enjoy all these amazing books, honey ❤️✨

  2. I love the look of the Marko Kloos series and at some stage – very soon – I MUST tuck into the Donovon series before it grows too long for me to catch up:)). But as ever, I’m gritting my teeth and trying to show RESTRAINT by now rushing out to get hold of a slew of your awesome haul. Green with envy that I’m unable to watch the Picard series, btw…

I’m listening to Machina too! It’s like an unofficial buddy read! Cries From the Lost Island looks really good. I don’t know if I’ve seen it before but I think I’ll add it. I loved Wheeler’s Kingfountain series- but for some reason I just haven’t gotten back to reading any of his other series. I have a copy of The Killing Fog in ebook format (it was a Kindle First freebie). I’m hoping I’ll get back to him because I really do like his characters.

Oops I forgot to start Machina today, but I hope to listen at some point this weekend. Maybe we can discuss it??

  4. So many great books to dive into! I need to read Queen of Raiders this month because it’ll be so easy to fall behind with the quick release schedule. And I took a pass on Witches of Ash & Ruin because I was just way overloaded but I’m still curious – hope you get to read it soon because I would love to hear your thoughts!

  5. While I love watching horror films, I have to admit I need to work on reading more horror books this year! Which is why following your and Erica Robyn’s Reads blogs are so good for me. Sounds like you’ve got some great new books, and a boxset by an author you already know and love. Happy reading x

  6. So many great books. I didn’t realize Cries From the Lost Island was from Gear’s wife. I was interested before and now I’m even more curious. I also placed a hold at the library for Black Leviathan after seeing Sammie rave about it so much. Hope you enjoy all your books (as I run off to buy Hellbound in a Hurry).

  7. Another great haul Tammy. I would love to be reading those Gear books – they seem to receive great reviews and I do have them on my wishlist but I don’t think they’re available in kindle – I’ll have to check if they’re out on audio.
I can’t wait to read A Chorus of Fire and see what comes next and how the characters develop, I’m thinking it may be quite different from the first.

I think the Gear books are available in both Kindle and Audio, but that’s in the US, I can’t really say for the UK. Quite a fun, exciting series, it’s kept me interested for three books so far!

  8. I really like the cover of The Killing Fog. Each time I see it I want to read the book, just to see how that scene plays into the story and what sort of world it’s in.

  9. So many good books here! I’ve got an ARC for The Sin in the Steel and Witches of Ash and Ruin, too. I’m excited for both of them! I’m so excited to see Black Leviathan on there. I hope you love it! I sure did. I need to get me a physical copy now, too. xD
