The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: Longest night – A dark and foreboding cover.
Since I’m throwing this post together at the last minute, I’ve decided to make things really simple this time. I’ve got only two covers today, but I think this book fits the theme perfectly. I’ve chosen The Chrysalis by Brendan Deneen, a spooky story about aliens and scary things in the basement of a house and a slowly deteriorating marriage. It was a lot of fun! Only two covers, as I mentioned, so it should be easy to pick. Right?
U.S. Tor Books edition 2018 | Russian edition 2019
That IS a hard choice! Um, the English version because the house is a little brighter, so the contrast is better. But they’re both awesome covers.

I do like the Tor edition but they really are kind of similar so the Russian one isn’t bad either. I really loved this book and need to see if the author has anything new on the horizon!
Both are equally lovely! I think I love the Tor cover most though. Never did read this one so I’m gonna have to check it out. 🙂

I think I love them both. What a lucky book to be graced with two fabulous covers.
Beautiful, eerie covers, both of them, but I slightly prefer the Russian edition because of the twist in the “roots” spreading under the house: they add a definite sensation of *wrongness* that’s very appealing… 🙂

These are both VERY foreboding, great pick!
I love them both! I can’t pick! There are elements I like in each. I love your snow on the blog, Tammy!
I can’t choose either. Both of them would make me want to grab them if I came across the covers.

The right one! I thought the original was creepy, but wow, the whole twisted effect really does wonders.
I really like the US one most but the Russian one intrigues me with the twisted roots part to the house. So I find that one to actually be more interesting although the other is aesthetically my favourite.

I love both! I also am adding this to the TBR because between your description of creepy things in the basement and that cover I’m pretty much sold.
They are both creepy. But I’d probably go for the Russian cover.
