Over-Booked [110] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Wow, so many unsolicited books came my way in the last few weeks! That’s the theme this week. I’m always thankful for any book mail that shows up, whether I requested it or not. I also have a couple of highly anticipated books that I did request, and I’m super excited to share those as well. Let’s get started!

Physical books received for review:

Kicking this off with books I requested, or surprise books that are already on my TBR:

First off, huge thanks to Tor.com who has been sending me cool surprise packages. And all of these I’ve featured previously on the blog for Future Fiction. First up, Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey. I loved Gailey’s Magic for Liars earlier this year, and their upcoming novella features “queer librarian spies on horseback.” And check out the cover of Repo Virtual by Corey J. White! It’s got to be one of my favorite 2020 covers so far. This is actually a novel, not your typical Tor.com novella.  Finally, a copy of Docile by K.M. Szpara arrived, another novel-sized book that I’ve been hearing lots of buzz about.

The God Game by Danny Tobey was a surprise arrival, but I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been hearing good things, and this is a January release which is really right around the corner, so I won’t have to wait long!

And now a book I went after in a big way, which I don’t do very often. But I really wanted an ARC of Chosen by Kiersten White, and after being approved on NetGalley first and finding out it wasn’t available in Kindle format (I told the publisher I was unable to review it), I was finally able to get this copy. I’m excited to read the next book in the series after Slayer!

From Ace I requested two November releases, Unnatural Magic by C.M. Waggoner and Novice Dragoneer by E.E. Knight. I’ve heard raves about both books, and even though I’m splitting my time between SciFiMonth and fantasy, I do hope I can squeeze these in.

And finally, my one and only Orbit request this month (see, I can show restraint when I want to!) is Fortuna by Kristyn Merbeth. This is perfect for SciFiMonth and I plan on starting it soon!

Huge thanks to Tor.com, St. Martin’s Press, Simon Pulse, Ace Books and Orbit:-D

Kicking off the next batch with a surprise from Wunderkind PR, The Never Tilting World by Rin Chupeco. Can you believe I’ve never read Chupeco before? Neither can I. Not sure when I’ll be able to read this, but I’m looking forward to it.

Blackstone Publishing always sends me the latest Hell Divers books by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, and even though I’ve yet to start this series, I’m extremely appreciative! I hope to read the first book in the series by the end of the year. This is book #6, Allegiance!

A beautiful finished copy of The Deep by Rivers Solomon came courtesy of Saga Press. If you missed my review, check it out here! I absolutely loved this powerful and beautifully written story about history and memories.

The New Improved Sorceress by Sara Hanover was a surprise from DAW Books, and it’s the sequel to last year’s The Late Great Wizard. I actually have a copy of that book but haven’t read it. I’d love to binge this series!

I’m SUPER excited for this next book, a surprise from Ace Books that I was not expecting! Cyber Shogun Revolution by Peter Tieryas is the highly anticipated sequel to Mecha Samurai Empire, although I believe this is more of a companion novel than a sequel.

The next three surprises arrived from Tor Books: first up, a lovely finished copy of Fate of the Fallen by Kel Kade. I’m actually reading this now and hope to have a review up next week. Black Leviathan by Bernd Perplies was another surprise, and one I’m thrilled to have, since this book has been on my TBR for a while. And last, The Monstrous Citadel by Mirah Bolender was another surprise, the sequel to City of Broken Magic. I have to admit I started but just couldn’t get into the first book, so it’s doubtful I’ll read this. Is anyone out there reading this series?

Big thanks to Wunderkind PR and Harper Teen, Blackstone Publishing, Saga Press, DAW Books, Ace Books, and Tor Books:-D

This last batch of books all came unsolicited, but there are a lot of intriguing titles! Courtesy of St. Martin’s Press, Rage by Jonathan Maberry looks like the first book in a spin off series. I actually love the sound of this and I wish I had time to read it this month. And Chokehold by David Moody is the third book in his Hater series, which I’m unfamiliar with. But one of my favorite authors, Craig DiLouie, loves this series so now I’m tempted!

From Ace Books comes the sixth book in Genevieve Cogman’s The Invisible Library series, The Secret Chapter. I’m so sad I haven’t started this yet!

This next book is really cool, although I hate to admit it’s just not for me. The Monsters Know What They’re Doing by Keith Ammann is a D&D guide based on the author’s blog of the same name. I’ve glanced through it and it’s a fascinating and very detailed list of different monsters and their characteristics. I’m not a D&D player so it’s sort of out of my wheelhouse, but I definitely appreciate this beautiful book.

A couple of surprise titles came from 47North via Wunderkind PR: Now, Then and Everywhen by Rysa Walker looks like a time travel story, and it’s an April 2020 release which gives me some time to slot it into my schedule. The Killing Fog by Jeff Wheeler sounds really good and is the first book in a series, which is always a bonus. And Bridge 108 by Anne Charnock is a short dystopian set in a near future Europe. I’m going to have to think about this, the early reviews on Goodreads aren’t that great, so I may wait a bit for more reviews to come in. Finally, also from Wunderkind, Estranged: The Changeling King by Ethan M. Aldridge is a graphic novel, although it is the second in a series. It’s a beautiful hardcover and it seems like it may be targeted to the middle grade audience. Time permitting, I’d love to give this a whirl!

Big thanks to St. Martin’s Press, Ace Books, Saga Press, 47North, Harper and Wunderkind PR!

Digital books received for review:

What started as a modest haul earlier in the week, well, sort of went to hell…

Thanks to a little birdie named Caitlin, I found out Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir and Network Effect by Martha Wells were available on Edelweiss! I couldn’t resist downloading them immediately:-D

Prosper’s Demon by K.J. Parker is a short Tor.com novella, and it’s getting awesome reviews already! I love this cover and the story sounds like fun.

I was super excited to be approved for The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. This doesn’t come out until next May, and it’s going to be hard to wait that long.

Race the Sands by Sarah Beth Durst has a fantastic cover and a fantastic sounding premise —monster racing!

I’m taking a chance on an unknown author (either self-published or an indie publisher, not sure which): Rhonda Parrish wrote me the most charming “please read my book” email I think I’ve ever received, and she won me over! I’m looking forward to her next book, Hollow, which comes out next March. And check out the cover!

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles was a recent Future Fiction pick, and I was super excited to grab it on Edelweiss.

Finally, I agreed to read Ghostland by Duncan Ralston, which is self-published, but I love the sound of the story and he wasn’t worried that I couldn’t get to it right away. Isn’t the cover great?

Big thanks to Tor.com, Saga Press, Harper Voyager, Wednesday Books, Rhonda Parrish and Duncan Ralston:-D

And that’s my haul! Let me know if you plan on reading any of these:-D

  1. The Captain

Okay seriously were ye pre-approved for the Murderbot novel? If so how? I wants it! I LOVE MURDERBOT!!!!
    x The Captain

For some reason I’m auto approved with Macmillan on Edelweiss. I’m sure it’s a mistake!! Lol.

    • Tammy

I have an extra copy of Docile if you don’t get your own copy, Bob. Let me know and I’ll send it to you!

    • Tammy

Well, it’s slow going for me, actually. I put it aside and picked up something else, which is not a good thing to do. I’m actually going to try to push through this weekend. Have you read it? For some reason the story just hadn’t grabbed me.

  2. Wow, another great list of books. Lots I’m curious about (what about that cover for Hollow?), but for now I’ve added The Killing Fog and Black Leviathan to my TBR. I’m drawn to Black Leviathan both because it sounds interesting and because the author is German, which I hope brings a different perspective to the story than I might be used to. And I’m looking forward to reading your review of Fate of the Fallen (already on my TBR).

  3. Reading this series of posts isn’t good for my soul, Tammy – for envy is a very nasty thing… Well done, you have another fabulous haul…

    • Tammy

I can’t believe I only requested one Orbit book this month, I saw everyone else’s huge boxes on social media!

  4. Damn dude, you got hooked UP this week! Tor has so many great books to look forward too. I’ve heard a lot about Wheeler’s books but hadn’t yet heard of The Killing Fog. I also got a copy of The Only Good Indians which I’m thrilled for and you getting Network Effect reminded me I have to finish the rest of those novellas! Happy reading!

    • Tammy

I really a glowing review of The Only Good Indians today (I know like 6 months early, right?) and I’m really excited to read it now!

  5. Wow, that’s a great list. Had to add a couple to my TBR of course! And raced to Edelweiss to download Harrow the Ninth as well. So excited for that one, but can’t start it until I finish my current review reads 🙂 Which includes starting Novice Dragoneer this week! Enjoy all the goodness.

    • Tammy

I thought of you when I heard about Ghostland. The author contacted me, otherwise I don’t think I would know about it.

  6. Sarah

I don’t know how you receive all these books and keep from getting overwhelmed. Your book hauls are always something to be envied but my gosh- where do you find the time?!

Anyway- that finished copy of The Deep is gorgeous!! Ghostland looks really cool. And I’ll look forward to your review of Rage. I’ve read some of Maberry’s Other books and enjoyed them.

    • Tammy

There’s no way I can read all of these. I have been getting a lot of “surprises” (unsolicited books) and that’s what most of these are. If you see anything you want, let me know!! I’m happy to give books away that I know I won’t get to.

  7. Ooooh, lots of great looking stuff here, Tammy! Network Effect! I’m so excited for that one! I requested it through Edelwiess, crossing my fingerst that the book gods will be good to me haha. Have fun with these!

  8. That is an impressive haul. I’m part envy and part relief! Who am I kidding, the relief is a fleeting feeling something about not enough time blah blah! Yeah. I basically want all the books.
    Lynn
