As if I don’t already have enough memes I’m participating in, I just HAD to join in the Little Red Reviewer’s new feature, Five for Friday! Here are the “rules”:
Welcome to a new-ish feature here at Little Red Reviewer, called Five for Friday. The concept is simple—it’s a Friday, and I post a photo of 5 books, and then we chat about them in the comments.
The only things these books have in common are:
– they were on my bookshelf
– I’m interested in your thoughts on them.
Want to join in? Post a picture of 5 random books you own, with the tag #5ForFriday and get your friends talking!
I may not do this every Friday, because I already participate in The Friday Face-Off and I’m not giving that up:-) But I do love diving into my bookshelves to see what’s there, so I thought this would be fun! Here are my five random books for today:
The Good Fairies of New York by Martin Millar (2006, Soft Skull Press). This was the first Millar book I read and I loved it! I don’t remember all the details, but it’s really funny. This is one of many reprints. I didn’t realize this was originally published in 1992, but looking at all the book covers on Goodreads I’m going to have to figure out how to feature this in a Friday Face-Off post:-)
Why Should I Cut Your Throat?: Excursions Into the Worlds of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror by Jeff VanderMeer (2004, Monkeybrain Books). I didn’t even know I had this book!! That is one reason I wanted to join this feature, because I am rediscovering my old books! So most of you know who Jeff VanderMeer is, but I didn’t realize he’d written a non-fiction book delving into the worlds of speculative fiction. Seems interesting!
Fangland by John Marks (2007, Penguin Press). I remember loving this vampire story when I read it, but wow the Goodreads reviews are awful! Ha ha. I also remember waiting and waiting for the author to write another book, but I don’t think he ever did.
The Strange Adventures of Rangergirl by Tim Pratt (2005, Spectra). I’m actually glad I found this, I have not read it, but I know Pratt has a fairly new book out, at least I feel like I’ve just read a review of one of his books. Honestly, I need to put this on my TBR because it sounds like fun!
Let Me In by John Ajvide Lindqvist (2007, Thomas Dunne Books). This is seriously one of the best, weirdest, scariest vampire books I’ve ever read, and if you haven’t read it, or seen either the U.S. or Swedish movies, you need to do that right away. This is all kinds of disturbing, but so well written. You might also recognize the original title, Let the Right One In.
Gosh, the only one I’ve read is the Good Fairies of New York, which I didn’t enjoy at all (although I couldn’t now tell you why; I just remember grinding my teeth a lot?). I’d like to read Let The Right One In though – I loved the Swedish film version (so beautifully shot!) and I bet the book is haunting.
Yes, read the book if you get a chance! So good:-)
I’m glad you aren’t planning on giving up Friday Face Off haha that is my favorite meme! Tho this one seems super cool too 😀 I haven’t even heard of any of the books you pictured :/

I agree, I always look forward to FFO, it’s so much fun to end the week with it:-)
Phew! Relieved to hear you aren’t giving up Friday Face-Off. But I thoroughly enjoyed this random selection of your books – a lovely wide-ranging and quirky haul…
No, I adored Friday Face-Off! I’ll never give that up:-)
There can never be enough memes! I’ve not read any of these, nor have I heard of most of them, haha. The Good Fairies of New York and Why Should I Cut Your Throat seem really interesting.
I’m not surprised that you haven’t heard of these, these books are so random, now that I think about it!
I’ve seen the movies of Let the Right One In but never read the book. Yes I agree the movie was very creepy. I have a copy of Fangland I bought on the charity shelf of a cafe down the street from my office for a quarter. Figured I’d read it one day. Fun meme.
The book is really good too, if you ever have time to read it:-)
I’ve never heard of any of these books. But I’m intrigued by Fangland and what it’s about. I mean, with all the negativity on Goodreads, you’re still waiting on the author for another book? Sounds like he can write! 😀
Well, I thought he could write back when I read it! Now I’m a little more picky, ha ha.
That VanderMeer book looks interesting! Plus that title!

The title is great, right?
Let Me In is one of the vampire stories I’ve always wanted to read and not managed yet, but reading your “weirdest, scariest” comment I think I need to change that, and soon! 🙂

Oh you should read it! It’s just brilliant, IMO:-)
The only book I’m familiar with in this grouping is Let Me In, not because I’ve read it but because I watched the Swedish film. It was strange, disturbing, and fantastic. I really enjoyed it. I purchased an ebook copy but haven’t yet read it. I love this feature, by the way. Look forward to seeing more in the future.
This was fun, I’m sure I’ll do it again, just not sure if I’ll have time every week:-)
Yes, Let The Right One In is one of my favorite vampire books and I love both movie adaptations, but I’m especially partial to the Swedish- 😉
Me too! I love both movies but there’s something about the Swedish version with subtitles that makes it a little more creepy.
I have never read Let Me In but I looooove the movie. Probably one of the best Vampire movies I’ve ever seen.
I’ve seen both versions of the movie and honestly I LOVE them both. Maybe the Swedish version is a little better? But seriously, brilliant film making!
These are all new to me, but I’m especially intrigued by The Good Fairies of New York.

These are all pretty old, so it doesn’t surprise me that few people recognize them!
Welcome to #5forFriday! Sorry it took me forever to comment on your post, I wasn’t online hardly at all yesterday.
I’m a little obsessed with Jeff Vandermeer, and that is a title of his that I’ve never even heard of!! It’s non-fiction? what kind of stuff is in it?? I needs to know!
Let Me In is one of the most terrifying and disturbing books I’ve ever read. I loved the movie tho. why is that kind of stuff so much scarier when you read it??
I read Pratt’s The Adventures of Rangergirl forever ago, i don’t even remember what it was about. If you give it a read, let me know how it is, maybe I’ll give it a reread.
The Jeff VanderMeer is non fiction, maybe essays? I bought it a long time ago when I was just buying random books for fun. I definitely plan to read Rangergirl at some point, I’ll let you know!
I’ve not read any of these, but I would like to! The Good Fairies Of New York has my especially curious.

Let the Right One In – awesome book! (And the Swedish movie is my favourite too … just so beautifully done). And Martin Millar! I’ve just borrowed his Supercute Futures from a friend, and I loved The Goddess of Buttercups and Daisies too. I was less fond of The Good Fairies of New York, or, at least, I think I was as I don’t really remember much about it now.
This is such a fun meme! 🙂
