I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday, which was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog.
Today is a “Freebie,” and my mind usually goes to types of book covers for freebie prompts. I love seeing different animals on book covers, and lately I’ve noticed quite a few books with deer on the cover. So here are ten I’ve found, some old and some new. Oddly enough, I haven’t read any of these except for Grimm Curiosities, but I do have a NetGalley copy of Something of a Calling.

You found a lot of deer covers!! And they all are beautiful!!
Thanks Susy!
All of these covers look interesting and ominous.
Yes, ominous is a great word:-)
I never realized there are so many covers with deer! They are all so stunning, great post!
Thanks Leslie!
Yes, I’ve noticed more deer on book covers lately as well. This is a fun idea for a post.
Thanks Lydia:-)
Ha, I think you win the prize for the most unique topic this week! Had no idea there were so many deer covers! Can’t say I’ve read any, although I do have a copy of Grimm Curiosities that I need to get to.
LOL. For some reason covers with animals just jump out at me:-)
I’ve seen a lot of these before, but I guess I never really considered deer being on the cover a thing until now! 🙂
I think a few recent covers with deer made me look harder, and I found quite a few:-)
amazing!
I only remember one I read: Répondre à la nuit
check the pretty cover here: https://wordsandpeace.com/2025/05/25/sunday-post-142-summer-plans/
Very pretty!
I love deer as animals but deer on covers kinda creep me out. I do love these covers though!
Right? A lot of these are very sinister…
I love this. Is the deer mounting a race to dethrone book snake? You know, I didn’t even notice the deer on the cover of The Devil Knows Her Name. Great choice of topic! As a complete cover reader, I never tire of seeing new covers.
LOL I don’t know if anything will overtake book snake!
I don’t know what covers you left out Tammy but Memory of Animals is just gorgeous
It’s so pretty right? But also a little creepy…
Nice job creating a large selection of deer covers. Another that immediately jumped to mind is Winter of the Gods by Jordanna Max Brodsky from 2017. It’s book 2 in a series I’ve not read, but I love the cover and it’s stuck with me.
Oh good call, Winter of the Gods would be a great one to add. I just didn’t go back in time far enough to remember it:-)
I never would have thought of looking for books with deer on their covers, but you found some awesome ones. I love it. 😀
I kept seeing them, so I started making a list!
Deer are surprisingly common on horror covers.
Thanks for sharing your #TTT
They really are, I was surprised to find so many:-)
You definitely found a lot of books with deer on the covers. I cant wait to hear what you think of Something Of A Calling. Im pretty sure The Winter Folk is one I was intrigued by too although the cover definitely makes me shudder.
The Winter Folk cover looks pretty but you’re right, it’s a little sinister!
When I clicked over and read the title of the post I said “Ooo” right out loud! Lol. I love deer! Even ones in horror novels. Lol.
They do seem to be used a lot on horror covers, lol.
Huh, you’re right, deer do get used more than I’d have guessed! I really need to get back to There Is No Antimimetics Division — I started it from a library copy, but it was the old version and the republished version has significant edits, so I figured it best to grab a new one. I was very intrigued by the ideas though.
I know I forgot some important deer books, lol. I will have to edit this post! And I’m very curious about the Antimimetics Division book, I hope you read it:-)
Have a good week and great day. Here is my TTT. https://dmhoisington.wordpress.com/2026/04/28/top-ten-tuesday-29-freebie-nature-on-covers/
Thank you, you too!
Deer do make regular appearances on covers, don’t they? The first one I thought of when seeing your topic is Stephen Graham Jones’s The Only Good Indians.
OMG I can’t believe I forgot about The Only Good Indians! I may go back and add it, good call.
It’s odd, publishing seems to go through yearly trends of featuring certain animals on covers. Couple of years ago I noticed it’s snakes, then after that rabbits. Lately I’ve been noticing deer, usually featuring their heads and antlered!
These are all very different deer covers! The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Forest of Memory by Mary Robinette Kowal.
I’ve done a lot of book cover based posts, but never one about deer. These are great! And deer are just cool looking animals. I especially like the one for The Memory of Animals.
