Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine, and is a fun way to share upcoming books you’re excited about with other bloggers and readers. I stumbled upon this Saga Press title the other day, and it sounds amazing. I’m so excited to read an urban fantasy set in the roaring 20s! Check it out:
THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets THE PEAKY BLINDERS in Lee Kelly’s new magical realism, crossover novel.
Magic is powerful, dangerous and addictive – and after passage of the 18th Amendment, it is finally illegal.
It’s 1926 in Washington, DC, and while Anti-Sorcery activists have achieved the Prohibition of sorcery, the city’s magic underworld is booming. Sorcerers cast illusions to aid mobsters’ crime sprees. Smugglers funnel magic contraband in from overseas. Gangs have established secret performance venues where patrons can lose themselves in magic, and take a mind-bending, intoxicating elixir known as the sorcerer’s shine.
Joan Kendrick, a young sorcerer from Norfolk County, Virginia accepts an offer to work for DC’s most notorious crime syndicate, the Shaw Gang, when her family’s home is repossessed. Alex Danfrey, a first-year Federal Prohibition Unit trainee with a complicated past and talents of his own, becomes tapped to go undercover and infiltrate the Shaws.
Through different paths, Joan and Alex tread deep into the violent, dangerous world of criminal magic – and when their paths cross at the Shaws’ performance venue, despite their orders, and despite themselves, Joan and Alex become enchanted with one another. But when gang alliances begin to shift, the two sorcerers are forced to question their ultimate allegiances and motivations. And soon, Joan and Alex find themselves pitted against each other in a treacherous, heady game of cat-and-mouse.
A CRIMINAL MAGIC casts a spell of magic, high stakes and intrigue against the backdrop of a very different Roaring Twenties.
A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly releases in February 2016 from Saga Press. Everything about this story screams “Tammy!” Seriously, I love the cover, I love the time period it’s set in, and I love the idea of a drug-like magic elixir. (Although I wish publishers would stop comparing books to The Night Circus already!) What do you think? Are you going to add this to your TBR pile?
Great pick! And great minds think alike, this is my choice this week too 🙂
Can’t wait to read it though as I loved Night Circus and Peaky Blinders! Agree with the Night Circus label thing though, there seems to be an awful lot of books getting labeled with that recently.

i have no idea what Peaky Blinders is, but I’m glad you do:-) LOL. And I love that we thought of the same WOW pick:-D
It’s a British television show starring Cillian Murphy, a gangster drama set in 1920’s Birmingham 🙂 Worth watching for Cillian alone 😉

I love the setting for the story. A 1920’s prohibits of sorcery seems like a fantastic idea!
I can’t help but think “catching lighting in a (wine)bottle” when I see that cover, or “that drink must be electrifying”, and many more bad puns 😛
OH I haven’t heard of this one before. It looks really good. My pick this week takes place in the 1920s as well. Great choice!
forgot to give link to my wow

This is a super popular one today! Love the blend of magic, gangs and the roaring 20s too. But I agree, publishers need to stop comparing books it creates expectations that aren’t often delivered. Great pick though 🙂
Happy Wednesday!

Saga Press looks like they have some amazing titles set to release over the next week! Although I’ve not read much from them, there’s no way I can resist a UF set in the roaring twenties. Give me spirit mediums, seances, and magical speakeasys and I’m a happy girl. 🙂

Prohibition meets magic? That is a novel idea for a novel (pun not intended, it just came out that way). Okay, I need to check this one out. 🙂
