San Diego Comic Con 2019 – Book Haul & Wrap Up & Giveaway!

Another year, another SDCC under my belt! This year was a lot of fun, for several reasons. For the first time ever, I got to meet a fellow blogger! I found out a few months ago that Caitlin from Realms of My Mind was going, and even though we didn’t make any formal plans to meet up, it didn’t surprise me when we ran into each other waiting in line for a book giveaway. The Comic Con “book attendees” (as I call us) are a fairly small group of dedicated readers, and we’re all interested in SFF books, which is what you find at Comic Con. So you keep seeing the same people as you go from line to line. In typical Tammy fashion, I neglected to take any pictures, but trust me, it was a lot of fun meeting Caitlin in person!

I also met four publicists that I’ve been working with. (And again, no photos!!! Sorry.) I’m usually too shy to approach publicists at SDCC, especially if I don’t know what they look like and I have to try to read their badge to see if I know them. It’s a bit awkward. But someone recognized me and I was really happy to meet three Tor publicists (Caroline Perny, Laura Etzkorn and Desirae Friesen) and a contact I have at Penguin Random House (Kathleen Quinlan). Everyone was so nice, and I can only imagine how hard they work at these types of conventions.

But the main reason I go to Comic Con is for the books. SDCC is almost like Book Expo for science fiction & fantasy fans. I was really lucky this year and picked up some of my highly anticipated ARCs, which you’ll see below. I also met lots of authors, and I’ll mention below which books are signed. Big shout out to Harper Voyager, Simon & Schuster/Saga Press, Tor/Macmillan, Hachette, Fierce Reads and of course, Penguin Random House for being so generous to us readers!

Finally, before we get to the books, I’m giving away a Comic Con pack at the end of this post. With apologies to international followers, this will be U.S. only due to shipping costs. This is strictly a follower giveaway, so you’ll need to be either following my blog by email or via a reader like WordPress, Feedly, etc.

Books from Comic Con:

I’m not going to list or link the books, I’m just too tired! But I do want to mention that I was lucky to meet the following authors, who signed my books: The Remaking (Clay McLeod Chapman – such a nice, friendly guy!), The Guinevere Deception (Kiersten White!! Freakin’ Kiersten White you guys!! She was so nice), Anyone (Charles Soule – he said if I enjoyed The Oracle Year I would love his new book too), War Girls (Tochi Onyebuchi – OMG he was the sweetest, most excited and friendly person!!) and The Beautiful (Renée Ahdieh – This was one of my most sought after ARCs and I’m thrilled to have met Renée. She said if you are a fan of Anne Rice, you’ll love her book.) The others are unsigned but I’m so excited to have them!

Out of this bunch, the signed ARCs are: There Will Come a Darkness (Katy Rose Pool), Steel Crow Saga (Paul Krueger) and All the Stars and Teeth (Adalyn Grace).

The only signed ARC out of this bunch is Riot Baby (once again, Tochi was so kind and friendly!)

In this bunch, the signed ARCs are The Walking Dead – Typhoon (Wesley Chu!) and The Starless Sea (Erin Morgenstern!) OK I have to admit I had a conflict with The Starless Sea, so I had to get my daughter to wait in line for that book so I could get something else. Ha ha. Hey, that’s why you have kids, right?

Finally, I met Seanan McGuire (In An Absent Dream), Rob Hart (The Warehouse) and Clare Di Liscia (Nelium). Clare was signing books at The Mysterious Galaxy booth, where you have to purchase everything, and it was the last day of con and I really didn’t want to spend any more money. She kind of guilted me into buying her book, but now that I have it, I’m actually sort of interested! Margaret Rogerson was there, she was on a panel and was signing books in another area, but I couldn’t make her signing. I did buy a copy of Sorcery of Thorns, though, because I’ve heard so many good things about it.

And now I need to start reading, and I mean REALLY start reading:-P But before I go, let’s have a giveaway! One U.S. winner will get everything shown below. This is a simple giveaway, you just have to be following me (email or some kind of reader like WordPress, Bloglovin’ or Feedly. Twitter doesn’t count!) Fill out the Rafflecopter form below to enter. Good luck!

I haven’t read an excerpt yet but as soon as I found out it’s comparable to Anne Rice’s books, I was even more exciting. I’m such a huge fan of her vampire series, even though a lot of readers these days don’t like it.

  1. Oh my goodness, what a stack of books!! I’m entirely envious of all thos cool pins you picked up too. Glad you had a great time

    • Tammy

Thanks Rebecca, Simon and Schuster gave away all the cool book related pins, they were so generous! I was excited to get the Sorcery of Thrones pin, I didn’t even know there was one.

  2. So many amazing books in this post! And a few I haven’t even heard of yet but I’m excited to check out. Looks like you had an amazing time.

    • Tammy

It was a lot of fun, and I would be sad if I couldn’t go one year, which is always possible since it’s so hard to get tickets these days!

  3. The Captain

Why oh why do ye always have to add a bajillion books to me list! Between ye and Sarah @ brainfluff, I swear me ship is going to be swamped and sink! Glad to hear ye had a great time. I am going to certainly add anyone to me list even though I haven’t read the oracle year yet. Arrr!

    • Tammy

I don’t think The Oracle Year and Anyone are connected, so it’s probably safe to read it! But wow, I did love The Oracle Year, it was so unique. Highly recommended!

  4. Laurie Harris

Wow, how cool. I wish I could have gone. What a great assortment of books. You are so bad for my reading addiction, lol.

  5. It was SO MUCH FUN to run into you at Comic Con! I can’t believe we forgot to get a photo! Comic Con was a blast, and it is amazing to me that as many books as I brought home, there were still some I didn’t know were on offer! Angel Mage snuck past me for instance!

Looking forward to running into you in the future! 🙂

It was a blast, and fingers crossed we both get tickets next year:-) I think Angel Mage was at Harper Voyager and it was a “buy a book, pick out a free ARC.” I missed a lot of your books too, there were just so many surprises, even when you plan ahead:-)

  6. So jealous! I hope to be able to go to SDCC some day. You got some great books. I would love to meet Kiersten White! At ALA in NOLA last summer, I tried to meet my contact for Disney, only she was never at the booth when I stopped by. Of course later in the fall she had moved to a new publisher, so maybe that’s why. I love going to Comic-Con here in my town, but I know there are so many I don’t get to meet! Jealous of your contact at Tor, although I have a friend who just started working for MacMillan and I hope to get my in with Tor Teen that way! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

That’s so cool that you have a friend at Macmillan! I’m finding that so many publicists don’t seem to hang around long and then they move on.

    • Tammy

It’s definitely worth going if you can swing it, such a fun book experience for SFF bloggers:-)

  7. That is a wonderful haul of books, Tammy – you’re now completely set up for the summer… AND you got to meet an amazing brace of authors:)). Glad you had such a fabulous Con

    • Tammy

It was so much fun. I’m already stressed out about getting tickets for next year, lol.

  8. You plan to get The Starless Sea is great! I wish I could have done something similar when I went the ALA conference. I’m so excited for that book. Can’t wait for it to hit shelves.
It’s great reading about your SDCC experience. It sounds so fun!

    • Tammy

I was actually surprised I got a ticket for The Starless Sea because that was probably the *biggest* ARC there:-)

  9. Wow, what a haul! Looks like HarperCollins had a big presence there, I see so many Voyager books I want to read, as well as a lot of Harper YA stuff I’ve been seeing around. And I know what you mean about the “book attendees”, lol…a lot of the folks I follow online are all into the movies and the games – only my book blogging buddies can be relied upon to gimme all the book coverage 😀 Glad to hear you had fun!

HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster were hands down the best publishers this year, they gave away fantastic ARCs! I don’t really get books from Harper Voyager so I was happy to get a few ARCs I’m dying to read.

    • Tammy

We are really scattered! It’s so surreal meeting someone when a) you don’t know what they look like before hand and b) you’ve only known them on the internet:-)

    • Tammy

I was excited to see Seanan McGuire again, I have met her before at other comic cons but it never gets old:-)

    • Tammy

Book hauls at Comic Con are always the best, I feel incredibly lucky that I got to go:-)

  10. Oh man, I would die for A Dragon Republic ARC!!! ARCS for sequels like those are hard to get. 😮 But wow… You sure knew how to make the most of this comiccon!! I love the haul and love the giveaway you’re hosting, although I can’t participate in this one hahah) Glad to see you had a blast, Tammy!!

Harper Voyager had this awesome deal going. If you buy the first book, you get the ARC for free. So because I never read and never had a copy of The Poppy War, I bought it and got the ARC of The Dragon Republic. Sweet deal!

  11. So many amazing books! I think you’ll love Sorcery of Thorns! And thanks for the generously sharing with a giveaway 🙂

    • Tammy

I can’t wait to read Sorcery of Thorns, it may be a few months before I can get to it, but I definitely will:-)

  12. Wow! How many trips did it take to get all those books back to the car? 🙂 Glad to hear you had a great time, Tammy. Looks like you really kept busy, and will be going forward now, too. I have a copy of The Nightjar on its way from a goodreads giveaway, so I’m looking forward to that one. Looks like lots of other great reads in this bunch, too. Can’t wait to hear what you think of some of them.

    • Tammy

Ha ha, luckily I had a car for the books;-) Oh great to hear you won The Nightjar! It was actually a fluke that I got a copy so I feel pretty lucky. Hope we both love it:-)

    • Tammy

It’s sort of overwhelming, isn’t it? And it was pretty cool to meet some publicists, they’re sort of like rock stars!

  13. Wow, what a fantastic haul and it sounds like you had an amazing time.
    Now, to the reading.
    Enjoy
And good luck to all the entrants in your giveaway.
    Lynn 😀

  14. It sounds like you had a fantastic time! It looks like you have some great reading to be done in the future. 🙂 I knew there were books at SDCC (frankly the only reason I ever considered attending, haha), but I had no idea how big it’d gotten! So glad it was a great time for you!
