Future Fiction #27: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I found these three cover reveals last week, and I can’t wait to share them with you!

Kill the Boy Band meets The Craft in this sly, witchy, dark comedy about four teens whose magic goes wildly awry in this irreverent debut from “author to watch” (Chuck Wendig) Sarah Gailey.

Keeping your magic a secret is hard. Being in love with your best friend is harder.

Alexis has always been able to rely on two things: her best friends, and the magic powers they all share. Their secret is what brought them together, and their love for each other is unshakeable—even when that love is complicated. Complicated by problems like jealousy, or insecurity, or lust. Or love.

That unshakeable, complicated love is one of the only things that doesn’t change on prom night.

When accidental magic goes sideways and a boy winds up dead, Alexis and her friends come together to try to right a terrible wrong. Their first attempt fails—and their second attempt fails even harder. Left with the remains of their failed spells and more consequences than anyone could have predicted, each of them must find a way to live with their part of the story

When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey. Releases in March 2020 from Simon Pulse. I’ve been waiting for this cover to be revealed, and now that is has, I absolutely love it! I believe this is Sarah Gailey’s first foray into YA fiction, and I love the way the cover has a YA contemporary/graphic novel look to it. I recently read and loved Magic for Liars, and I can’t wait to see what they do next. Queer witches! And the amazing cover art is by Amalia Alvarez.

Inspired by a true story, this supernatural thriller for fans of horror and true crime follows a tale as it evolves every twenty years—with terrifying results.

Ella Louise has lived in the woods surrounding Pilot’s Creek, Virginia, for nearly a decade. Publicly, she and her daughter Jessica are shunned by their upper-crust family and the Pilot’s Creek residents. Privately, desperate townspeople visit her apothecary for a cure to what ails them—until Ella Louise is blamed for the death of a prominent customer. Accused of witchcraft, both mother and daughter are burned at the stake in the middle of the night. Ella Louise’s burial site is never found, but the little girl has the most famous grave in the South: a steel-reinforced coffin surrounded by a fence of interconnected white crosses.

Their story will take the shape of an urban legend as it’s told around a campfire by a man forever marked by his boyhood encounters with Jessica. Decades later, a boy at that campfire will cast Amber Pendleton as Jessica in a ’70s horror movie inspired by the Witch Girl of Pilot’s Creek. Amber’s experiences on that set and its meta-remake in the ’90s will ripple through pop culture, ruining her life and career after she becomes the target of a witch hunt. Amber’s best chance to break the cycle of horror comes when a true-crime investigator tracks her down to interview her for his popular podcast. But will this final act of storytelling redeem her—or will it bring the story full circle, ready to be told once again? And again. And again…

The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman. Releases in October 2019 from Quirk Books. This cover was just revealed, after teasing us with a “fake” cover for months! Look closely at the design on the snake! This story sounds soooo good, and I’m really craving a good horror tale. Luckily this is coming out in October which is perfect timing. (Also wanted to credit the cover artist but I couldn’t find him/her/them. Anyone know?)

The start of a new fantasy adventure from Brian D. Anderson, bestselling author of The Godling Chronicles and Dragonvein series.

Mariyah enjoys a simple life in Vylari, a land magically sealed off from the outside world, where fear and hatred are all but unknown. There she’s a renowned wine maker and her betrothed, Lem, is a musician of rare talent. Their destiny has never been in question. Whatever life brings, they will face it together.

But destiny has a way of choosing its own path, and when a stranger crosses the wards into Vylari for the first time in centuries, the two are faced with a terrible prophecy. For beyond the borders, an ancient evil is returning, its age-old prison shattered.

The two must leave their home behind, and in doing so will face sorcerers and thieves, con-men and assassins, treachery and greed. How far down this path will they have to go to stop the rising darkness and save their home? And how much of themselves will they have to give up along the way?

The Bard’s Blade by Brian D. Anderson. Releases in January 2020 from Tor Books. Brian D. Anderson has written a ton of books, and I can’t believe I’ve never read any of them. This book changes that in a big way. I was captivated by this amazing cover art by artist Félix Ortiz and I just had to add it to my TBR.

  1. Sia

I’M SCREECHING THEY FINALLY GAVE US A COVER FOR WHEN WE WERE MAGIC AND IT IS FLAWLESS!!!

I love the hidden details in the Remaking cover, though, and I’ve had Bard’s Blade preordered for a little while. I’m just super into a wine-maker saving the world???

I still don’t know how you manage to find these but thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks Sia, glad I could find some new covers for you, I spend WAY too much time on Goodreads looking for them:-)

  2. Ooof… a few weeks ago someone mentioned in my comments that snakes seem to be the new trend on book covers. It very much seems so! Haha 😀

  3. The Sarah Gailey book looks amazing — but why does the descrption call it a debut? Is it an earlier work of hers? Or do they mean it’s her YA debut? Very confused… (but heck yeah, I’ll read it!)

  4. It’s impossible to just mention one, isn’t it? All three of these sound good. I especially like the cover of When We Are Magic. And witches! I can’t resist a book featuring witches.

  5. I am loving the snake covers! I just read The Snakes and it has a creepy cover, and I love The Remaking too. It’s definitely evocative. All three are engaging covers, Tammy! Great choices, as always.

Thanks, I’m very fond of all of these covers this week. Hopefully the stories are just as good:-)

    • Tammy

It sounds good, right? I love the Craft comparison, that’s one of my favorite movies:-)

  6. The Remaking does sound interesting. As does The Bard’s Blade. Love that cover, and so far I’ve never grown tired of these sorts of fantasy tales. Lately I’ve been craving a new one, maybe I’ll give this one a try when it’s out.

    • Tammy

And there is never a shortage of them either! I agree, this one sounds really good.

  7. Omg I’m in love with the sound of the Remaking… but when were these people supposed to have been burned at the stake? I thought that practice stopped in the 1600s?!

Also is the movie supposed to be the Blair Witch Project?! Gah I’m so intrigued. I need this book like right now.

    • Tammy

I had a lot of new choices this week, it was very easy to put this post together:-)

  8. The Remaking sounds cool but that cover creeps me out as I hate snakes!!!! Not if I would have picked it up to even look at it…lol. So good thing you put it on here. 🙂

  9. Thank you for the mention. Felix is extremely talented and I’m grateful to have him as my cover artist. The story behind how it came to pass is quite inspiring and I suggest following the link on his name to the article on Tor.com where you can read about his journey.

She’s been so busy lately! I loved her last book, and I’m very curious to see how she does YA.
