What’s On My Plate – August 2026

August is the last month of Summer of Horror, and it went by so fast! I feel like I haven’t participated much this year, so I’m hoping to make August much more horror-centric than last month. Luckily I have quite a few horror review books on my plate:-) Take a look at the books I’d love to get to this month:

Worry Box by Chris Panatier. This is a September release I’m going to read early. Chris sent me a signed copy of his book and I couldn’t be more grateful! Plus it’s been getting rave reviews.

The Calamities by Chuck Wendig. This is probably my most highly anticipated August release, and I’ll be reading it very soon.

Devil Inside by Clay McLeod Chapman. Clay’s books have been hit or miss for me lately, but I am crossing my fingers this works for me:-)

The Art of Charming A Changeling by Sylvie Cathrall. I’ve read some amazing cozy fantasies this year, so I hope I also have luck with this one, it sounds really good.

The Two of Us at the End of the World by C.A Fletcher. This promises to be a very emotional dystopian story, I can’t wait.

The Night Pool by Lauren Lee Smith. This is being compared to Lone Women by Victor LaValle, which was AMAZING. This sounds just as good!

A Plagued Sea by Kim Bo-young. This is the only novella I have on my plate this month, and I have been hearing good things.

The Burn Line by Jonathan Sims. This is a horror story that takes place on a London train, it sounds really good!

If We Survive the Night by Jo Salazar. This appears to be the first book in a zombie horror series, can’t wait!

A Numbers Game by R.J. Dark. R.J. Dark is a pseudonym for R.J. Barker, and this time he’s tackling the mystery/thriller genre.

Summer Coven by Kat Hillis & Rosiee Thor. Ok technically I have not read the first book in the series, but I’m going to dive into this second book anyway!

The Inevitable Undoing of Zahara Douglass by Leslye Penelope. This sounds like a twisty story about a missing sister, maybe? I haven’t read this author yet but I’m very curious to try her work.

What books are you excited to read this month? Do we have any in common?

  1. The Night Pool isn’t my thing, but the premise sounds very good. I enjoyed The Burn Line, though I have to say that the social commentary is a bit too on-the-nose…Zahara Douglass surprised me, but I found the main character to be a tad too immature for 22, and I wish the (insta)lust/romantic entanglement aspect would have turned down a bit 😀 (review to come in a few days).

  2. There are a LOT of new releases this month. I’ll be looking at mostly mysteries right now. Brimstone Hollow, The One Who Walked Away, Child of Ashes, God’s Country and Shadow Friends. But my most anticipated is A Trade of Blood which I’ll be finishing soon, reading now.

I’m actually hoping for physical copies for both of those, but I’m happy to have Netgalley copies at least:-)

I’m curious about The Calamities so I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!

  4. I can’t wait to start The Worry Box. Hopefully I have a few titles this month that should follow under The Summer of Horror banner – I’m thinking also of the Riley Sager, the Pinborough and The House That Eats the Dead.

  5. I didn’t manage to get a print copy but I have managed to get a digital one via Netgalley so I’ll also be reading The Art Of Charming A Changeling this month. It’ll definitely be interesting to hear what you think of the R. J. Barker genre change. Worry Box sounds great but I think it’ll freak me out, definitely curious to hear what you think of it though. Hope you enjoy all of these and have a wonderful August.

  6. Looks like quite a month ahead of you! I’ve just started The Calamities, hoping it’s another great one from him! I’m so eager to get into C.A Fletcher’s new book, too, though a little hesitant for how emotional it might be, lol! I’m also really curious about The Night Pool. I hope you have a fantastic month!
