Over-Booked [89] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s been a month since my last book haul post (other than my Comic Con haul that I shared a couple of weeks ago), and I’ve got a new stack of awesome books to share! Wow, is publishing just exploding or am I imagining things? Because there are so many new books coming out, it’s almost depressing in a way because I know I’ll never get to read them all. But I do hope to read these books:

Physical books for review:

A few delightful books came courtesy of Orbit Books. One was a request (Shadowblack by Sebastien de Castell, the sequel to Spellslinger!!), one was a surprise (Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri!) and one is a finished copy of one of my MOST highly anticipated books this year—Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames.  I am excited for each one of these, and Bloody Rose is next, so stay tuned! Thank you Orbit:-D

Garrison Girl by Rachel Aaron is my first time working with Quirk Books, and I couldn’t be happier. I just started reading it and so far it’s a bunch of fun. I’m not familiar at ALL with the Attack on Titan manga that the story is based on, and maybe that will work to my advantage. And yes, Rachel Aaron is the same author who wrote the Paradox series as Rachel Bach, and the self-published Heartstrikers series! Thanks Quirk:-)

Oh I screamed when I opened Abandoned by W. Michael Gear, the sequel to last year’s thrilling Outpost! I don’t actually write to publishers to request books all that often, but I had to make an exception with this book. And I was so excited when I got a confirmation email back that a copy was on its way. Thank you Daw!

And I was floored when debut author Temi Oh contacted me (after seeing my Waiting on Wednesday feature for her upcoming book, Do You Dream of Terra-Two?) and asked if she could have the publisher send me an ARC. (Of course I said yes!) And I was even more surprised when this gorgeous UK ARC showed up—not what I was expecting at all! Huge thanks to Simon & Schuster UK!

Next up, a surprise from Tor Books, Denied by Cathy Clamp. Even though this is book #3 in her series, I just checked Goodreads and it’s calling this a stand-alone. So maybe I can read it after all. Thank you Tor!

I received a couple of surprises from the awesome Pyr books: Nebula Awards Showcase 2018 edited by Jane Yolen. This is a fantastic annual anthology that Pyr puts out which showcases that year’s Nebula nominees and winners.

And No Sleep Till Doomsday by Laurence MacNaughton is a welcome surprise as well, the third book in MacNaughton’s very popular series. I have all three books so I really need to do a binge read soon. Thank you Pyr!

A beautiful finished copy of Trail of Lightning was a surprise from Saga Press, and I love having it on my shelf since it’s one of the best YA novels I’ve read so far this year.

Finally, I purchased a couple of books. My monthly Apex Magazine arrived, with beautiful cover art by Kim Myatt. Inside are stories by Damien Angelica Walters and Tal M. Klein, to name only a few.

And my pre-ordered copy of the Subterranean Press limited/signed edition of The Future is Blue by Catherynne M. Valente arrived, and it’s stunning, just like all of Sub Press’ publications.

Digital Books for Review:

I can’t wait to read more from Lavie Tidhar, and his newest, Unholy Land is coming out in October. Thanks to Tachyon for the review copy!

Author Joshua Winning contacted me and asked if I’d like to read one of his books, and because I’ve been seeing Vicious Rumer around, I told him I’d be happy to. I hope to read and review it this month. Thanks Joshua!

I’m a huge Brady Hendrix fan and I can’t wait to read his latest, We Sold Our Souls. If I understand correctly it revolves around a heavy metal band. Sounds like fun! Big thanks to Quirk Books:-D

The Darkest Star is the start to a new series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, but I believe it’s set in the same world as her Lux series, which I have not read. Is anyone familiar with those books? Big thanks to Tor Teen for the review copy:-)

Finally, I decided to take a chance on a new horror publisher that I’ve been hearing a lot about lately, Flame Tree Press. The Mouth of the Dark by Tim Waggoner sounds really good. Thank you Flame Tree Press!

And that’s my latest book haul. Are you planning to read any of these books? What should I start with?

Also, I’m participating in the #LadiesofHorrorFiction Instagram challenge throughout the month of August, and I’m having a blast! If you’re on Instagram and we aren’t following each other, follow me @tamsparks, I’ll follow back!

All the Subterranean Press books are really beautifully done, but I can’t buy them very often because they’re a little pricey:-)

I just finished Garrison Girl and loved it. Although I’ve read some reviews from people who love the show and they didn’t love the book that much.

  1. I can’t get enough of your book hauls!
Do You Dream of Terra-Two sounds AMAZING! Discovering new planets is one of my absolute favourite science fiction stores.
The Lux series is one of my favourites! I cannot wait to get my hands on The Darkest Star.
Great haul as usual. You kill me every time haha.

  2. It made me laugh that you screamed – book post can do that to you.
    Great haul.
The Trail of Lightning book I’ve just bought for audio so looking forward to that one very much.
That Valente cover is rather lovely.
I still need to pick up Nicholas Eames *headdesk*
    Lynn 😀

  3. You always have enviable book hauls, Tammy. 😉 I just got a B&N coupon via email, so I think I will reward myself before it expires and get Jacqueline Carey’s Starless and Rebecca Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning.

  4. Your book hauls always fill with me with a mixture of excitement and envy – and this time is no different… Garrison Girl was great fun and I love the sound of Trail of Lightning…

Interesting, I had no idea there were already Attack on Titan novels in English. I haven’t read the manga but I really enjoy the anime. The live action movie(s) was a little disappointing, though it had its moments.. I love the cover of Abandoned. That’s a series I’d like to try. And I think I’d enjoy Bloody Rose if I could only get around to reading Kings of the Wyld first.

  6. Abandoned looks awesome! And yay for Trail of Lightning- that one looks so good, I can’t wait to get to it. Unholy Land has an amazing cover that makes me want to know more- I’ll be checking that one out further. Great haul this week!!!!

  7. Now that’s a bunch of great books. I’m so jealous you have a copy of Abandoned. Maybe I should take a leap and reach out to DAW as well. I am excited too hear your thoughts on the Grady Hendrix book. Although I still haven’t forgiven him for the dog in My Best Friend’s Exorcism, I do love his style.
