Top Ten Tuesday – Summer 2018 Most Anticipated Books

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

This week’s theme has to do with your favorite books to read at the beach, but since I don’t really go to the beach that often, I’ve decided to list my top ten most anticipated books releasing this summer! I’m happy to say I have review copies of most of these and have requested copies of the others, so expect to see reviews up eventually:-) These books all have release dates of June, July and August, which are the months I count as “summer.” Take a look: (listed in order of release date)

City of Bastards (Royal Bastards #2) by Andrew Shvarts. Released on 6/5. I recently read and loved the first book in the series, Royal Bastards, and I’m hoping to get to this soon. Such a fun, readable series!

The Mermaid by Christina Henry. Releases today! 6/19. I’m in the middle of this (and might be finished by the time this post goes live). I’m a huge fan of Henry, and this fairy tale/historical story is wonderful so far:-)

Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse. Releases on 6/26. I’ve been looking forward to this for months, and even though I’ve seen some mixed reviews, I have a feeling I’m going to love it.

The Unfortunates by Kim Liggett. This will be the third book I’ve read by Liggett, an author who exemplifies the idea of “the more you write, the better you get.” I didn’t care for her first book, but I really enjoyed her second, so I have high hopes for this!

European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman (The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club #2) by Theodora Goss. Releases on 7/10. Wow, that is a mouthful! I’m beyond excited to read the sequel to The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter. Although this book clocks in at over 700 pages (intimidating to me!), I hope those pages fly by.

One of Us by Craig DiLouie. Releases on 7/17. This sounds like all kinds of amazing: kids in an orphanage who are…different from other kids.

Contagion (Contagion #1) by Erin Bowman. Releases on 7/24. Space thriller! YA space thriller! I’ve been loving this subgenre so much and I’m curious to see how this book stacks up.

Alternate Routes by Tim Powers. Releases on 8/7. I’m a huge Tim Powers fan from back in the day (or “before blogging”) but it’s been years since I’ve read anything new by him. I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s up to now!

Foundryside (Founders #1) by Robert Jackson Bennett. Releases on 8/21. I fell in love with the cover, but the story sounds just as wonderful. New RJB, what could be better??

Bloody Rose (The Band #2) by Nicholas Eames. Releases on 8/28. The wait for this book is physically painful for me (and I’ll bet I’m not the only one who feels that way!). If you haven’t read Kings of the Wyld, you must go do that immediately!

Let me know if you plan to read any of these books:-D

  1. Thank heavens most of these are already on my wishlist. I was afraid when I saw the theme that you would be adding more to my TBR. Trail of Lightning made my list this week as well. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Mermaid. I have it but am a tad afraid to read it because I loved Lost Boy so much and I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed.

The Mermaid was completely different from Lost Boy, so it’s hard to compare them. I think I missed some of the darkness that Lost Boy had, The Mermaid wasn’t quite as “supernatural” feeling, despite the fact that it’s about a mermaid. But I still enjoyed it.

  2. I’m so looking forward to most of these as well! Foundryside, Bloody Rose, Contagion, Theodora Goss’ book… so many great releases are coming, it’s hard to keep up. Hope you love all of these!

  3. I got a signed copy of Lost Boy by Christina Henry at Comic Con this weekend!! She was also promoting The Mermaid 😀 If I like Lost Boy I will definitely read The Mermaid too!

Oh cool! I really want to meet her. Lost Boy and The Mermaid are completely different, but I loved both of them. Lost Boy is very dark, and the Mermaid is much lighter.

  4. The Mermaid is on my summer TBR as well, the rest are new to me or sequals to books I have not read yet but they sound fantastic

I’ve seen mostly positive reviews for it, and the Goodreads average is really high, so I have high hopes:-)

I suddenly remembered I have a blog tour on Tuesday and I need to read that book, otherwise I’d probably be starting on Trail of Lightning.

  5. I’m looking forward to your review of Contagion. It sounds really interesting, but it’s YA classification worries me a little. I know it shouldn’t, but YA Science Fiction has let me down too many times to jump in blind.

  6. Such a lot of fantastic books to look forward to – and such a lot of catching up *groans*. I need to pull my socks up – I’m like a slow mo zombie at the moment.

Ha ha it’s hard for me to get going with my review pile as well, my family is so busy this summer!

  7. I love the sound of The Mermaid and Contagion is obviously piquing my interest – given that space opera adventure is my go-to genre… But I also have a HUGE stack of books I want to get through this summer holiday:).

  8. The Mermaid sounds interesting. Mogsy just posted a review of it today at The Bibliosanctum, actually – have you checked it out?

I only have… maybe three new books I’ve truly got my eye on this summer? I’ve already read one (Side By Side by Jenni L. Walsh), and the second has also come out (Guardian by A.J. Hartley). The third one is Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, which comes out next month, I think. Other than that, summer reading will be dedicated mostly to catching up on the TBR pile – including ALLLLLLL the 2017 books I still have to read. *lol*

I just finished The Mermaid and it was really good! I’m also excited about Spinning Silver, I’ve seen a few great reviews so far:-)
