Over-Booked [83] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s been slow for the past couple weeks on the blog, due to the normal Pop Show shenanigans that happen around this time of year. It was my daughter’s last show, and it was so much fun, but I’m pretty exhausted after four performances and lots of late nights, and little time to read or blog. Hopefully I’ll get back on track soon:-) Well, I did pretty well these past three weeks with NetGalley requests (only one new one!), although for some reason I have three new Edelweiss books. My mailbox has seen a lot of action lately as well, not sure why, but hey I’m not complaining! Take a look:

Physical books for review:

A wonderful trio of books came from Orbit last week! 84K by Claire North is about a future society where instead of going to jail for crimes, you can pay a fee and go on with your life. Cool idea, right? I’m also very excited about Arm of the Sphinx, book two in Josiah Bancroft’s Books of Babel series. Reviewers are saying it’s even better than the first book! And finally, a cool sounding SF book that reminds me of The Martian, One Way by S.J. Morden. Sort of mixed reviews on Goodreads, but I’m still looking forward to it. Big thanks to Orbit!

A couple of awesome review copies from Tor Teen showed up as well. First up, I believe I requested this, and I’m so happy my request was approved. I’ve heard amazing things about Kim Liggett’s next book, The Unfortunates. This looks more like a novella, as it’s only about 200 pages, but the blurbs on the cover make me want to read it right now, even though it’s a July release. It’s hard to describe the plot, if I were you I’d head over to Goodreads and check it out, and add it to your TBR while you’re there! I also received a surprise in the mail, Girl at the Grave by Teri Bailey Black. This Gothic mystery sounds really good. Huge thanks to Tor Teen for these goodies:-)

Pyr was kind enough to send me a copy of the upcoming Blood Orbit by K.R. Richardson, which I believe is the author’s debut. Police procedural in space! Sign me up:-) You can also see the true cover on Goodreads, and John Scalzi gave a nice cover blurb! Big thanks to Pyr Books!

I just featured The Beast Player by Nahoko Uehashi on my What’s On My Plate post for March. I just love this cover, and the story is supposed to be fantastic. Thank you to Pushkin Press for the review copy:-D

From the lovely folks at Wunderkind PR and Harper Perennial, The Oracle Year by Charles Soule sounds really good. A man wakes up one day with the ability to predict the future.  Also from Wunderkind and Saga Press, I received a finished copy of The Tangled Lands by Paolo Bacigalupi and Tobias S. Buckell. This is a novel consisting of four short novellas, and I’m curious to see what it’s all about, especially since I just learned that one of the novellas is Bacigalupi’sThe Alchemist. Thank you Wunderkind, Saga Press and Harper Perennial!

Digital books for review:

I just requested Blackfish City by Sam J. Miller even though it comes out next month, but I’m so glad I did. I’m getting some Catherynne M. Valente and Chandler Klang Smith vibes from this story, I hope I’m right!

Planetside by Michael Mammay is another great sounding SF story and already has a bunch of five star ratings on Goodreads. I feel like 2018 is shaping up to be a great year for science fiction!

Author J.P. Sloan contacted me recently and asked if I’d like to review his weird western fantasy, Yea Though I Walk. His publisher is comparing it to R.S. Belcher’s Six Gun Tarot, which I’m a huge fan of. I’m really looking forward to checking this out soon! Thanks to J.P. and Curiosity Quills Press:-)

I featured Hullmetal Girls by Emily Skrutskie in a top ten list a few months ago, so I was thrilled to be approved to read it. I really loved her first book, and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.

Finally, I had requested The City of Lost Fortunes by Bryan Camp on a whim MONTHS ago, and was just approved. I had almost forgotten why I requested it, but it actually sounds like my kind of story:-)

Big thanks to Ecco, Harper Voyager, Delacorte and John Joseph Adams!

And that’s my book haul this week! Let me know if you plan on reading any of these books:-D

I agree, so much great sounding sci-fi coming up! Spring seems to be very popular with publishers for new book releases too. There are just too many to keep up with:-)

The Beast Player peaked my interest, just added to my TBR list. I’m not always able to get into young adult, but the story line and cultural elements sounds good, so I’d give it a try. Lots of other interesting books in the list, as well

I love the cultural aspects of The Beast Player as well, I hope it’s as good as the cover!

  2. 84K has my interest, and Blackfish City too (I have high hopes for that one). Hull Metal Girls is new t me, but looks promising. Looking forward to hearing more about that…

  3. I just added that Kim Liggett book to my wishlist yesterday. I also featured Girl at the Grave on a CWW post a few months back. So many good books!!!!! Glad you enjoyed the time with your daughter – you can read and blog all you want once she’s in college!!!!

  4. You and I are definitely on the same lists, a copy of Oracle Year and Girl at the Grave also arrived last week but didn’t quite make the cutoff to be featured on my book haul post, so it’ll have to wait til next time. I am curious about the City of Lost Fortunes, on first glance it didn’t seem like my type of book either, but then when I check Goodreads I see I had added it a while ago, so there must have been something that appealed to me!

Oh that’s funny. I do that too sometimes, add something to my list then forget why I added it, lol:-)

I hadn’t heard of the Oracle Year until Wunderkind brought it to my attention. It has great reviews, we’ll see!

  5. As usual, your haul looks amazing 🙂 I like the new cover of Arm of the Sphinx – reading it right now, although I think I liked Selling Ascends better. There’s just so much tension! I think I’m an odd reader – most people prefer it that way, haha.

I’m curious to see how I like Arm of the Sphinx. I’ve heard both sides from bloggers, either it’s better than Senlin Ascends or not as good. I’ll be looking for your review:-)

Thanks Mary, wow sorry about the power! I can’t imagine. Sounds like a winter storm situation. Good luck!

  6. And… once again I’m beside myself with jealousy! One Way and 84K are both books I’d LOVE to get my hands on… And Planetside is another one I think was made for me in mind, too. I’m looking forward to see what you make of them. Have a wonderful week, Tammy:).

One Way and 84K will both be on NetGalley, and I believe One Way is up now. They do both sound good, I hope you get the chance to read them as well:-)

  7. Oh wow, I hadn’t heard of 84K, but that premise sounds really interesting! I also hadn’t heard of The Unfortunates, but I’m going to check that out too! I considered requesting City of Lost Fortunes but never really could figure out if it’d be my kinda book or not. I’ll be looking forward to your review.
