What’s On My Plate – March 2018

It’s March already? Time just won’t slow down, no matter how much I complain. Once again, I have a high school senior (my son was a senior last year) and at this point things get crazy busy for everyone in the family. March is the month we expect to hear about my daughter’s college applications (although she’s already been accepted to her dream school, we’re waiting to hear from everyone else—fun times!) I’m also winding down my volunteer involvement with my daughter’s show choir, which is actually making me teary-eyed, despite all the complaining I do about it! I REALLY hate change, I’m not going to lie. I’ve been a school volunteer in various capacities for the past thirteen years, and I can’t believe that part of my life is coming to an end.

BUT this post is about books, so here we go. I thought I only had a handful of March review titles, but it turns out I have more than I realized. All of these are highly anticipated reads, however, and I couldn’t be more excited for each and every one! And I’m officially declaring March The Month of the Sequel (you’ll see what I mean below). Here’s what’s on my plate this month:

Most Anticipated:

Topping my amazing list of March titles are these two:

Impostor Syndrome (The Arcadia Project #3) by Mishell Baker. I’ve been on board with this series since the beginning, and I’m so excited to see how Baker wraps things up!

The Night Dahlia (Nightwise #2) by R.S. Belcher. This is technically an April release, but I’m super excited to be joining the blog tour in March. Stop by on the 26th to read my interview with Belcher, and enter to win a copy of the book!

More awesomeness in March:

Looking Glass (The Naturalist #2) by Andrew Mayne isn’t my usual genre, but the first book in the series was so much damn fun that I can’t wait to read this! If you love thrillers with tons of science, you need to be reading Mayne.

Obsidio (The Illuminae Files #3) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. This is my only non review book this month (although I would have killed to get a review copy!), and I have it preordered. The release date is March 13 but I honestly can’t remember if I ordered it from Amazon or The Book Depository, so who knows when it will show up. Expect me to drop everything, though, when it does!

Arm of the Sphinx (The Books of Babel #2) by Josiah Bancroft. I ended up really enjoying the first book after a rocky start (you can check out my review here), enough to request the sequel:-D

Torn (The Unraveled Kingdom #1) by Rowenna Miller. Hey, it’s the first book in a series! I’m excited to check out this fantasy about a seamstress who stitches magic into clothing.

Smoke Eaters by Sean Grigsby. The concept of this story sounds cool: firefighters who fight dragons! Grigsby is a firefighter himself, when he’s not writing, so I’m betting there are lots of cool details based on his own experiences.

The Beast Player by Nahoko Uehashi. This is a bit different for me. Pushkin Press, who publishes wonderful stories from all over the world, asked if I’d like to read this young adult fantasy (or it might be middle grade, I’ll let you know when I read it) which has been translated from the Japanese. I fell in love with the cover, and it’s already got lots of love from reviewers, so I’m looking forward to checking it out.

And I can’t leave out a simply brilliant March title I’ve already read and reviewed, so if you missed my review, you can check it out below:

The Hunger by Alma Katsu releases on March 6th. I loved this horrific but emotional tale that gives a supernatural spin to the real life story of The Donner Party. Horror fans NEED to read this! My review.

Did you miss any of my reviews last month?

Outpost by W. Michael Gear

Pride and Prometheus by John Kessel

Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft

Fire and Bone by Rachel A. Marks

By a Charm and a Curse by Jaime Questell

And that’s my reading plan for March! Let me know if you’re planning to read any of these, otherwise I’d love to hear what’s on your plate this month:-D

Yes, The Night Dahlia is one I’m super excited about, although also a little scared because I loved the first book so much, and I hope this one is just as good:-)

I’m looking forward to your buddy read of The Hunger, I think the horror lover in you will really enjoy it.

  1. You had a great reading month in February, and it looks like that’s set to continue in March – and like you, I can’t quite figure out where February has gone! I look forward to reading your reviews – I’m particularly excited to hear about Torn which looks awesome. Have heaps of reading fun – and I look forward to hearing about it in due course. In the meantime, best of luck with your daughter’s college applications!

Thank you Sarah! It’s a “pins and needles” month for sure, waiting on college acceptances. Hopefully books will distract me!

  2. I love it when all the sudden a whole bunch of sequels I’m looking forward to are coming out lol. You’ve got some great looking books on this list! I still need to read the Mishell Baker series. And I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Torn. And I just love the premise of Smoke Eaters—firefighters being the ones to fight dragons! Look forward to your thoughts on that too 🙂

It’s strange to have so many sequels this month! But I’m excited about all of them. Now to find more hours in the day to read them all!

All these sequels, and I haven’t yet read any of the first books! I can’t keep up, but I love seeing all that’s out there. Looks like a great selection.

It does seem to be Sci Fi heavy this month, which is OK! Some of my favorite recent reads have been scifi, authors are KILLING it this year:-)

Oh you’re so lucky! I couldn’t figure out how to get a review copy of Obsidio. But it doesn’t matter, my preorder has shipped, yay!

  4. Aww, the kids growing up = bittersweet.
A great month ahead in terms of books though. I can’t wait to read the Mayne books – I need to get to Bancroft and I love the love of The Beast Player – I look forward to reading your thoughts on that one.

Yep, Torn sounds different! I can’t believe how many awesome books there are this month:-)

  5. I’m with you, that Beast Player cover is drawing me in. I hope it’s a great story too.I have no idea what I’m reading this month. I know what I should be reading (Netgalley arc’s) but I may continue to ignore them for a bit longer. I’ve been enjoying the freedom to read whatever I want/whenever I want.

    • Tammy

I wish I could let myself experience that freedom! But I feel so guilty when I don’t read review books. One of these days…

    • Tammy

Yes, change is hard! The Hunger is a great choice if you’re in the mood for horror:-)
