Over-Booked [210] – September 2025 Book Haul

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

I nearly forgot this was the last Saturday of the month, September flew by so quickly! Here are the books I received in September for review:

Books in the mail for review:

Titan Books has been so generous, and I received the first four books from them:

We Are Always Tender With Our Dead by Eric LaRocca. This is already out, and I’m frightfully behind with my September review pile, so I’ll catch up with it next month for sure. It’s supposed to be a tough read, so I’m bracing myself…

Demon Song by Kelsea Yu is out next week. It’s a short novella I hope to fit in soon. Isn’t the cover pretty?

Also from Titan, I received The Flesh King by Richard Kadrey. This is the sequel to The Pale House Devil which I loved.

I’m so excited to have an ARC of Futility by Nuzo Onoh. You can tell from the cover that there’s going to be some food/body horror in this one!

I was thrilled to win a Goodreads giveaway recently, and it’s a book I wouldn’t normally review on this blog so I’m even more excited to have a copy. Whidbey by T. Kira Madden is a literary thriller/mystery that sounds so good. This doesn’t come out until next March, so I probably won’t read it right away, but I can’t wait. Big thanks to Mariner Books for the copy!

The Darkness Greeted Her by Christina Ferko has some buzz words that drew me in: “sapphic horror, therapy camp, and Appalachia.” This comes out in early 2026, and I’m excited to try this author. Big thanks to Soucebooks Fire for the review copy:-)

You Weren’t Meant To Be Human by Andrew Joseph White. This is a lovely finished copy with sprayed edges, huge thanks to Saga Press for sending it my way! I’m sad I haven’t been able to squeeze it in yet, but this will be on my October TBR for sure.

Cathedral of the Drowned by Nathan Ballingrud is the sequel to Crypt of the Moon Spider, which was super weird but very good. This comes out next month so you’ll see a review soon. Thank you Tor Nightfire for the review copy!

The kind folks at Split/Lip Press pitched Krackle’s Last Movie by Chelsea Sutton to me, and I couldn’t resist. This is a short novella with a horror movie theme, and it sounds so good! I can’t find it on Goodreads yet, but click the link to read about it on the publisher’s website.  Thank you Split/Lip Press!

Big thanks to Orbit for the next two books. First, I was sent a surprise copy of The Strength of the Few by James Islington. It’s been years since I received anything unsolicited from them, and I haven’t read the first book so I’m not sure why they sent it to me! If anyone in the US wants my copy, let me know!

I was excited to get Outlaw Planet by M.R. Carey. I will read all of his books, and for some reason this is giving me The Book of Koli vibes. Can’t wait!

Finally in the physical pile, I received a finished copy of Fiend by Alma Katsu, which I’ve already read and reviewed. It was fine, but not my favorite of her books. Big thanks to Megan at MB Communications for the copy:-)

Digital books for review:

You can tell I’ve been very good with my NetGalley requests! Just four new books this month. Starting with (gasp) two fantasies! These are all 2026 releases, so I have a bit of a wait before I read them.

Thistlemarsh by Moorea Corrigan sounds fantastic, a historical fae story with a gorgeous cover.

The Geomagician by Jennifer Mandula has so many cool elements: historical fantasy, dinosaurs and cozy romance. I can’t wait to try this:-)

Nothing Tastes As Good by Luke Dumas sounds like fun: a horror story about weight loss. I enjoyed my last Luke Dumas book, and I’m looking forward to reading more of his work!

Last but not least, Detour by Jeff Rake and Rob Hart is one I grabbed it because of Rob Hart, who is a favorite author of mine. We’ll see how he does with this collaboration, but this sci-fi thriller sounds fantastic.

With thanks to Berkley, Del Rey, Atria Books and Random House Worlds:-D

Do you plan to read any of these books?

  1. The Strength of The Few I am really excited about that one even if I will wait and see if they translate it in Italian since I read that first one translated. But I hope they will be quick because I am really curious!!
That said, you mentioned a lot of interesting books! Thistlemarsh (I hope I wrote it right ) has an amazing cover!!

  2. Once again, I’ve turned an unbecoming shade of green at your book haul. If only I lived in the States – I LOVED The Will of the Many and have been waiting for the next instalment. Instead I’ve preordered the audiobook, now I know it will be available relatively soon – thank you for that! And I’m also waiting to see if I’ll be able to get hold of Thistlemarsh – fingers crossed. Congratulations on a wonderful collections of books:)).

  3. “Murder. Revenge. Soup.” And that cover! Oh my… 🙂 Congratulations on the goodreads win. It’s been almost a year since I won anything there, but I keep entering. I hope you enjoy the book.

  4. September definitely flew by, this year seems to be racing passed tbh. Wow how exciting to receive a finished copy with sprayed edges book wise. That Futility cover is highly disturbed. I love the designs of the first two digital arcs you’ve gotten though and premise wise they sound incredible too. Pretty sure i first heard about them both on your Wednesday posts. I hope you enjoy all of these it looks like a fantastic haul and I can’t wait to see what you think of Demon Song.

  5. Titan has been coming out with lots of great books lately, I had to stop accepting all the pitches lol. And wow you won a goodreads giveaway! I don’t think I’ve won one in almost ten years lol.
