Future Fiction #345 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Today is for fantasy fans! Take a look at these three newly revealed covers and let me know if they sound good:

A woman who runs a cat rescue in 1920s Montreal turns to a grouchy but charming wizard to help save the shelter in this heartwarming cozy fantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of the Emily Wilde series.

Agnes Aubert leads a meticulously organized life—and she likes it that way. As the proudly type-A manager of a much-needed cat rescue charity, she has devoted her life to finding forever homes for lost cats.

But after she is forced to move the cat shelter, Agnes learns that her new landlord is using her charity as a front—for an internationally renowned and thoroughly disreputable magic shop. Owned by the disorganized—not to mention self-absorbed, irritating, but also decidedly handsome—Havelock Renard, magician and failed Dark Lord, the shop draws magical clientele from around the world, partly due to the quality of Havelock’s illicit goods as well as their curiosity about his shadowy past and rumors of his incredible powers. Agnes’s charity offers the perfect cover for illegal magics.

Agnes couldn’t care less about the shop—magical intrigue or not, there are cats to be rescued. But when an enemy from Havelock’s past surfaces, the magic shop—and more importantly, the cat shelter—are suddenly in jeopardy. To save the shelter, will Agnes have to set aside her social conscience and protect the man who once tried to bring about the apocalypse—and is now trying to steal her heart?

Havelock is everything Agnes thinks she doesn’t need in her life: chaos, mischief, and a little too much adventure. But as she gets to know him, she discovers he’s more than the dark magician of legend, and that she may be ready for a little intrigue—and romance—in her life. After all, second chances aren’t just for rescue cats…

Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter by Heather Fawcett. Releases in February 2026 from Orbit Books. Ahhh I’ve been waiting for this cover to be revealed! It’s adorable, right? And the story sounds amazing. It’s going to be hard to top the Emily Wilde books, but I think this might be able to do that:-)

When a Victorian fossil hunter discovers a baby pterodactyl, she vows to protect him with the help of a fellow scholar—her former fiancé—in this enchanting and transporting historical fantasy.

Mary Anning wants to be a geomagician—a paleontologist who uses fossils to wield magic—but since the Geomagical Society of London refuses to admit women, she’s stuck selling her discoveries to tourists instead. When an ancient egg hatches in her hands, revealing a loveable baby pterodactyl Mary names Ajax, she knows this is the kind of scientific find that could make her career—if she’s strategic.

Mary contacts the Society about her discovery, and they demand to take possession of Ajax. Their emissary is none other than Henry Stanton, a distinguished (and infuriatingly handsome) scholar… and the man who once broke Mary’s heart.

Henry claims he believes in the brilliant Mary, and that he only wants to help her obtain the respect she deserves. She knows she can’t trust her fellow scholars, who want to discredit her and claim Ajax for their own—but can she even trust Henry, who seems intent on winning Mary back?

Now Mary has a new mystery to solve that’s buried deeper than any dinosaur She must uncover the secrets behind the Society and the truth about Henry. As her conscience begins to chafe against her ambition, Mary must decide what lengths she’s willing to go to finally belong—and what her heart really wants.

The Geomagician by Jennifer Mandula. Releases in March 2026 from Del Rey Books. Dinosaurs and magic? That’s a combination I’m not sure I’ve seen before. This sounds delightfully different, and the cover is fantastic!

Welcome to Harker Academy for Deviant Defense. Keep your daggers sharp, and your wits even sharper.

Viv Abbot is an average twenty-one-year-old girl. She lives in an expensive city where the rent is too high, works long hours at a thankless job, and is dating a guy she doesn’t even like in the hopes of winning her prickly mother’s approval.

She just also happens to be a demon hunter.

Ever since her father’s murder, she’s been forced to hunt deviants alone, meaning everyone, including her family, sees her as an outsider. . . . Until the day she crosses paths with a dangerously alluring demon, Reid Graveheart. The reformed deviant tells her of a school for people just like her: Harker Academy for Deviant Defense. If she enrolls, she’ll learn to hone her craft, work with other hunters, and never be alone again.

But Viv has a deadly secret. One that not even her new friends at Harker can know about. Not when the school might hold the answers to untangling the mystery surrounding Viv’s father’s death. When strange occurrences begin to plague the students, Viv will have to figure out who she can trust, and fast. All while trying to ace her classes, not fall for a demon, and make it through her first year at Harker in one piece. How hard could that be?

Half City by Kate Golden. Releases in February 2026 from Ace Books. I feel like I’m not reading enough urban fantasy these days, and I think this might be the perfect book to scratch that itch. Plus I’m always on the lookout for a good dark academia story.

The new Heather Fawcett sounds completely different from the Emily Wilde books, I’m excited:-)

  1. These all sound amazing! Did you know that Mary Anning was a real paleontologist? I’ve read about her in two other books (one fantasy, one historical fic), and love that she’s getting attention. The Heather Fawcett books sounds almost too cute (no such thing!) — cats + wizards? Yes, please!

  2. A mystical cat shelter?! SOLD SOLD SOLD! I still haven’t made it to the Emily Wilde books but I’m really loving the sound of Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter.

When a Victorian fossil hunter discovers a baby pterodactyl… Ummm also sold! Also love the sound of this one.

And most of all I love the sound of Half City. Urban fantasy is my favorite kind of fantasy. I also don’t read enough of the genre but it has my heart!

  3. As if your horror showcases don’t add enough to my TBR, all three of these fantasies sound great too. I have yet to read Emily Wilde but I know people love that series and I do enjoy a cat book from time to time. And did I see ” baby pterodactyl?” I definitely need to learn more about that.

I’m not a big cat lover either but for some reason I’ve been reading a lot of books with cats in them, and enjoying them:-)

  4. And I want them allll, my precious!! I think you are single-handedly responsible for inflating my TBR to its current impossible height. Thank you very much:).

  5. The description of The Geomagician brought back great memories of a fun and oddball movie by Luc Besson called The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec. It also was a Victorian story with a pterodactyl and a bit of magic. It’s a fun one if you have the time and can find it. 🙂

  6. I already wanted to read the first of these but it was lovely seeing the cover and reading the full blurb at last. That second book sounds fantastic and looks stunning too. It’s kind of giving me Lady Trent vibes but with dinosaurs rather than dragons and the addition of magic. Definitely adding it to my TBR.
