Buffy’s Corner 7/6/25 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer.

I’m enjoying a long, holiday weekend, and I hope my U.S. friends are too. We’ve had lovely weather up here in the mountains (although some high temps will hit later this week, so I’m enjoying it as much as possible), and I do love the 4th  where I live because fireworks are illegal, so there’s no noise at all, as opposed to my years living in the city where fireworks are also illegal, but no one seems to care. (I’m talking about individuals setting off fireworks in their backyards or nearby streets, not sanctioned firework shows.)

And for those waiting for a Badger report (I mentioned last week that he had to have surgery to remove a foxtail in his neck), it turned out to be good news, although it was a long, frustrating day. We took him to the vet at 8:00 a.m. and they said to pick him up at 4:30. We got a call at 4:00 from the vet’s office saying the doctor had just checked him and decided he didn’t need surgery, because it looked like he was healing on his own. So good news that he didn’t have to go through surgery, but bad news that the doctor didn’t look at him until 3:30 or 4:00, which means they wouldn’t have been able to do the surgery that day if surgery was necessary. It also meant that poor Badger must have been stuck in a crate all day waiting for nothing, with no food or water (that we know of). When we finally picked him up, he was not himself at all, and it took a couple of days for him to get back to normal. Poor baby, I swear I will never leave him alone again! He was clearly traumatized by the experience, although I guess we’ll never know exactly what went on. The vet’s office was smart enough not to charge us anything (especially after I sort of made a scene over the phone when I found out he’d been waiting around all day). Lessons learned: check for foxtails after every walk and ask more questions if your pet has to have surgery. I would have insisted the doctor check him before we dropped him off, and the whole thing could have been avoided.

Sigh, at least our good boy is back and healing!

  1. Oof, I can’t believe they had him waiting around like that! But thank goodness for the healing powers of us mammals! Good job him on healing up himself.

I’m getting really curious about The Library at Hellebore, though I’ve had mixed experiences with Cassandra Khaw’s work…

I’m very grateful to the vet (despite the day long waiting around) that he didn’t want to do surgery if he didn’t need to. I don’t think all vets would have that attitude.

The Library at Hellebore was WEIRD and GROSS. Ha ha. Writing my review soon!

  2. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader

I am glad Badger is finally ok but poor boy! And I just added An Ancient Witch’s Guide to my TBR!

  3. Oh Badger, poor guy! I definitely understand your frustration since that’s such a long time to be stuck in a crate. That’s no way to take care of a dog. I just wanna give him all the pets he deserves!

    • Tammy

He would love that! He’s much better but I never want him to go through that again!

  4. Very glad to hear Badger is back and doing well, though sorry to hear about the whole experience. I envy you that quiet. There’s a field out behind my house and illegal fireworks are going off late into the night and for multiple nights after each 4th. Hoping there won’t be (m)any tonight so I can get some sleep before the return to work. 🙂

  5. Ah poor Badger! Next time I’d be making sure they checked before I left. Poor guy. I don’t mind the fireworks usually, because my dogs don’t care that much. But for some reason last night, after you’d think they’d be done, Argyle decided he didn’t want to be in his cage and I had to let him sleep with me all night. Oh well. Hopefully that’s all it was. Because I was gone on the 4th and every time I checked the camera during what would have been the hours people were setting them off, he and Dora were buried under blankets in their cage sleeping, no whining or anything. Hope you have a good week!

Some dogs are so sensitive to fireworks. My poor Otis used to hide in the closet or the bathtub, he was so scared:-(

It’s weird, I’ve started to get random followit emails, but not every day. And for some reason, I am still getting email notifications for your blog, but you’re the only one!

  6. Poor Badger!! But I am so happy that surgery wasn’t necessary!!!

Vets stay can be traumatic for dogs, especially if they stay there for a long time, even if the vets treat them well. It’s just that it’s a new and usually scary place (because of the smells) and they don’t understand what’s going on. But I am so glad he is well!!

I can see both sides of the story, vets everywhere are overwhelmed. I’m doing my best to keep him from needing to go there!

  7. Ooh, I have the Hellebore book so good to know you’re enjoying it so far.
Poor Badger – my two really don’t like going to the vet at all (I think all cats and dogs are the same) but I must say we have such a good vet and the dogs just simply behave for her. Those seed heads are such a nuisance. I think I need to check my dogs paws a lot more at the moment – but they’re so touchy about them! My last dog had one that had burrowed into his paw, between the pads and had pierced the skin, luckily I was able to get it out. Badger will be okay after a few days – it must have been such a shock to him and you can’t exactly talk him through it!
    Lynn 😀

    • Tammy

It’s so hard when they don’t talk to you, lol. Everything would be so much easier:-)

  8. Poor Badger! I’m glad he didn’t need surgery, but my jaw dropped when I got to the bit where you said what time the vet checked him. My first thought, too, was, “What if he HAD needed surgery?!” Ugh. I hope your next vet experience is better. ♥ Can’t wait for the Hellebore review!

    • Tammy

Exactly! I guess they would have kept him overnight and done the surgery in the morning, and probably charged us for that!

  9. Wow, sorry to hear that about Badger, though I’m glad he didn’t need surgery. If they couldn’t see him until later in the day, then they should have let you know in case you’d been able to pick him up. That was very thoughtless of them. 🙁

And projectile fireworks (or whatever they’re called) are illegal in Virginia, too, but that doesn’t stop folks. My cat was not happy about it. And then people do it all over again the next day. Rude.

  10. OMG poor Badger. Glad he didn’t have to have surgery but sorry he went through this. We had an incident once where our dog was scheduled for surgery at 8am and he had separation anxiety so we checked on him at 1pm and they hadn’t taken him in yet. They clearly knew we had taken off all day to be around for him and could have brought him later. We told them we were coming to get him and lived only 10 minutes away. Well they hurried up and sedated him and when we got there were going to remove the lump he was there for. We said no way and took him to another vet. It was the last time we used them and I don’t regret it for a minute.
