Buffy’s Corner 6/29/25 – Looking At the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer.

I have a lot to talk about today, so buckle up.

Let’s get the not so great news out of the way. A couple of weeks ago, Badger developed a lump on his neck, which actually turned out to be an infection. The swelling on his neck got so bad that we took him to the emergency vet last Sunday, where they lanced the wound and drained the fluid. He’s been on meds all week, and they told us one of two things could happen. He would recover and the swelling wouldn’t come back, or the area would start swelling again, which would mean there was some kind of foreign body in his neck, probably a foxtail. Well, the swelling returned after a few days, unfortunately, and our regular vet said the best thing to do is to go in and remove the foxtail (or whatever it is), otherwise he might get worse. So he’s having surgery on Wednesday, and I’m very worried. If everyone could send good thoughts, that would be great. It’s going to be a rough couple of weeks.

OK, on to more pleasant things. The baby jays have left the nest! They are hopping around our yard, testing their wings, and the parents are still feeding them. It’s both stressful and exciting. I’m not sure how long this stage lasts, before they leave for good, but it’s fun to watch. The photo below was taken just before they hopped out.

Lastly, WordPress has stopped sending me email notifications of posts from the blogs I follow, and I have no idea why it’s happening. I’ve searched my settings for something that might have changed, and I can’t find any reason for this (and yes, I check my spam regularly). It might sound kind of dumb, but it’s frustrating because I’m missing lots of posts from blogs I follow regularly. I’m trying to catch up and remember which blogs I haven’t visited lately, so if I usually leave comments on your blog and I’ve been absent, that’s why. Let me know if this has happened to you or if you know how to fix it. Oh, and I’ve tried the WordPress reader and it’s sort of a mixed bag for me. And it’s not just WordPress, I’m not getting Follow It emails either. Grrr…

OK, on to book stuff!

Upcoming reads & reviews:

This week I should be able to post two reviews, The House on Utopia Way, which was a lot of fun, and yes, I’m currently (finally!) reading The Palace of Illusions and loving it. Next I’m switching to some cozy fantasy for the holiday weekend, so I’ll pick up An Ancient Witch’s Guide to Modern Dating and The Enchanted Greenhouse.

Other posts this week:

It’s a busy week since we’re heading into July. I hate to post twice in one day, but I plan on posting both a review and my June Wrap-Up on Monday; Tuesday I’ll share my July reading plans; Wednesday is Future Fiction and three new cover reveals; and Friday I’ll probably post another Rainbow of Horror cover post.

Summer of Horror updates:

I’m so happy to see other bloggers joining in with my (very casual) event, Summer of Horror. I have a handful of posts I’ve seen around, and I’ll link them below. Also, if you have posted anything Summer of Horror related and you don’t see your post listed, let me know so I can add it!

Dark Shelf of Wonders – Sporror. Where the Mushrooms are Scary

A Kernel of Nonsense – Queer YA Horror Recs

  1. Very glad to hear about the jays, and what a great view of them. But very sorry to hear about Badger. I wish you all the best and hope for a quick recovery. Take care, Tammy.

  2. Poor Badger! Sending positive thoughts your way and hoping that the surgery goes well, and that he has an easy recovery. Great to hear the update about the jays! I’ve had that same issue with WordPress in the past, and as far as I recall, it just fixed itself after a few days — there wasn’t anything in the settings that had changed, and despite being frustrated and looking for solutions, it just sort of resolved itself in the end.

  3. First off I want to say that I am sending so many healing thoughts and prayers for Badger! I totally understand the stress and worry and how hard it is when our pups are having problems. I’ve had issues with WordPress as well as some other ways I’ve tired following blogs and I don’t always get updates. So I have to try to remember to go to those blogs, and I’ve started a page in my blog planner to try to remind myself. I hope your WordPress issue gets working again though. I think my Follow It has been working? But it’s changed and doesn’t list them all out in the email anymore, I have to click on a link and go from there. Ugh. The baby jays are cute. You’ve got a bunch of reviews I am still catching up on and looks like some good ones coming soon!

Thank you Lisa:-) I know you’ve been through so much worry over your dogs too (well, I guess every dog parent has). I am doing the same, making a list of blogs I visit so I won’t forget.

  4. So sorry to hear that Badger is poorly – sending all the best for his surgery on Wednesday. I hope the WordPress issue sorts itself out – I’ve had some issues with my images recently and a couple of days later, it was fixed without my getting in touch (I’d managed to find a workaround). But if it doesn’t improve, check your anti-virus – I’ve had problems with them stopping blogging sites contacting me and I have to disable part of the online protections in order to be able to comment on a number of sites. Hoping the coming week turns out to be a really good in the end, Tammyx

Thank you Sarah! That is an interesting idea, to check my antivius. In fact, I tried to go to a particular blog the other day and my antivirus wouldn’t let me!

          • There are workarounds – Himself removed his antivirus because it was annoying him and promptly picked up some malware that prevented him from opening up his browser:(.

  5. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader

I will pray for Badger Tammy! And about WordPress, don’t you use the WP reader/Jetpack? That’s how I know blogs I follow publish something.

    • Tammy

I’ve had to start using the reader, I never did before, so I guess I have to adjust mentally, lol.

  6. I’ll definitely be hoping for the best for Badger. You don’t seem to have a post on Thursday, so you could move the June Wrapup to then since technically the month isn’t even over yet. That is strange because it is both WordPress and Followit. It’s almost like there is a problem with your email address. You could try Feedly putting in the blogs you follow or just a couple to see if it works. That’s how I follow everything.

Thanks Anne! I was thinking the same thing, maybe something’s up with my email. I just have no idea who to even ask about it. Oh well, I’ve started using the WP reader and it’s fine for now.

    • Tammy

We’ve been told it’s pretty minor surgery, and also they’ve done a lot of surgeries to get foxtails out, so I feel pretty good about it:-)

  7. Ooof, hope Badger’s surgery goes well!

I’ve ended up using an RSS reader to follow blogs, it’s just easier. WordPress has been super annoying for me on that front for a while. It doesn’t send out emails if I schedule posts, only if I post them manually, for instance, so I decided I don’t trust it as a whole. But then of course one has to remember to actually look at the RSS feed…

  8. Sending positive thoughts for Badger! I hope everything turns out ok!

It sounds like a WordPress issue, not something on your end. I noticed that my two follower counters (one via a button & the other via an email sign up) are no longer synced & display different follower counts. That tends to happen when WP does some sort of update and it usually gets sorted in the end. However, it’s been a little longer than usual and they’re still out of syn.

Thanks Celeste! I hope it’s a WP thing, but it’s been going on for a week now and still hasn’t resolved. I’m starting to use the WP Reader which is OK, but I also follow non WP blogs that don’t show up there. Sigh, technology…

  9. Laurie | Bark

Big gentle hugs for Badger! I hope everything goes well and he’s feeling better real soon.

  10. The baby birds are driving me crazy atm. It’s not easy with two hunting dogs when baby birds are learning to fly. I’m having to watch them all the time!
Poor Badger – of course, as I’m working my way back through your posts, I already know the outcome – it’s so stressful though.
    Lynn 😀
