Future Fiction #333 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

This week I have three awesome covers to share, take a look:

Sometimes the fate of entire worlds can be decided by a woman with nothing to lose, and the smartest gun in the multiverse in her hand . . .

This is the story of Bess – or Dog-Bitch Bess as she came to be known. It’s the story of the gun she carried, whose name was Wakeful Slim. It’s the story of the dead man who carried that gun before her and left a piece of himself inside it. And it’s the tale of how she turned from teacher, to renegade, and ultimately to hero.

This is also the tale of the last violent engagements in an inter-dimensional war – one of the most brutal the multiverse had ever seen.

This is how Bess learned the truth about her world. Came to it the hard way, through pain and loss and the reckless spilling of blood, and carried it with her like a brand on her soul. And once she knew it – knew for sure how badly she’d been used – she had no option but to do something about it.

Outlaw Planet by M.R. Carey. Releases in November 2025 from Orbit Books. Oooh I’m so excited for this! Carey is one of my favorite authors, and this has sort of a Western in Space vibe to it. I can’t wait!

Becky Chambers meets Miss Marple in the second entry of this cozy sci-fi mystery series, helmed by a formidable no-nonsense auntie of a detective

Welcome to the HMS Fairweather, Her Majesty’s most luxurious interstellar passenger liner! Room and board are included, new bodies are graciously provided upon request, and should you desire a rest between lifetimes, your mind shall be most carefully preserved in glass in the Library, shielded from every danger.

A wild baby appears! Dorothy Gentleman, ship detective, is put to the test once again when an infant is mysteriously left on her nephew’s doorstep. Fertility is supposed to be on pause during the Fairweather’s journey across the stars—but humans have a way of breaking any rule you set them. Who produced this child, and why did they then abandon him? And as her nephew and his partner get more and more attached, how can Dorothy prevent her colleague and rival detective, Leloup, a stickler for law and order, from classifying the baby as a stowaway or a piece of luggage?

Told through Dorothy’s delightfully shrewd POV, this novella series is an ode to the cozy mystery taken to the stars with a fresh new sci-fi take. Perfect for fans of the plot-twisty narratives of Dorothy Sayers and Ann Leckie, this well-paced story will leave readers captivated and hungry for the next installment.

Nobody’s Baby (Dorothy Gentle #2) by Olivia Waite. Releases in March 2026 from Tordotcom. I’m excited to see the announcement and cover for the follow up to Murder By Memory, which I really enjoyed. A mystery surrounding a surprise baby sounds like fun!

A fan-favorite character returns in this action-packed instalment of the Hugo Award-winning Wayward Children series.

After Nancy was cast out of the Halls of the Dead and forced to enroll at Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children, she never believed she’d find her door again, and when she did, she didn’t look back. She disappeared from the school to resume her place in the Halls, never intending to return.

Years have passed. A darkness has descended on the Halls, and the living statues who populate them are dying at the hands of the already dead. The Lord and Lady who rule the land are helpless to stop the slaughter, forcing Nancy to leave the Halls again, this time on purpose, as she attempts to seek much-needed help from her former schoolmates.

But who would volunteer to quest in a world where the dead roam freely?

And why are the dead so intent on adding to their number?

Through Gates of Garnet and Gold (Wayward Children #11) by Seanan McGuire. Releases in January 2026 from Tordotcom. I loved Nancy’s story and I’m glad MGuire is revisiting her character. I can’t believe we’re up to book #11!

  1. I love the sound of Outlaw Planet. And the Dorothy Gentle series sounds fun, though they’re a bit too short for my taste. I’m loving that cover, though. As ever, you’re always the one with the cool books, Tammy:)).

  2. Roberta R.

Outlaw Planet’s cover is stunning! Too bad I’ve given up on Carey after Infinity Gates…To think that I loved The Girl with All the Gifts.

The Wayward Children always have awesome covers. This one is the most ominous to date though LOL.

  3. These are all books I might read. I want to read MR Carey. I’ll definitely read the next by Olivia Waite. And I expect I will get to the McGuire series sometime.

Anne – Books of My Heart

  4. I still need to start both of those series but I do really want to read them. And the first sounds intriguing, although I may try to read two of the other books by the author that are on my TBR first. It definitely sounds fascinating though.

You’ve successfully reminded me once again how far I am behind on the Wayward series books! I hope you end up loving all of these.

  6. Wayward is up to No.11 – wow. I think I only ever read the first one so I certainly have a lot of catching up – which, ngl, probably just isn’t going to happen now.
    Lynn 😀
