Seven Fantasies That Feature Travel

I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday, which was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog,

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday works perfectly with Wyrd & Wonder: stories that feature travel. I chosen a variety of fantasy books that deal with quests or travel in some way, and I’m staying away from the obvious choices (I’m looking at you, Tolkien!) I only have seven on my list because that’s all I had time to find, but I hope you enjoy this selection!

The Bone Ships by R.J. Barker. In this thrilling series opener, we follow the Tide Child and its crew as they hunt an elusive sea creature called the arakeesian. This is one of my very favorite seafaring fantasies!

Dreambound by Dan Frey. In this magical fairy tale-like contemporary story, a distraught father goes on a quest to find his missing daughter. Dreambound made it into my top five books of 2023 for good reason: it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read.

Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill. Jenny Greenteeth and her companions must go on a quest to find three magical objects in order to destroy an evil King who is threatening their village.

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. A retired mercenary reluctantly agrees to help an old band mate rescue his daughter, in this hysterically funny and fast-paced road trip fantasy.

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. Of course I had to include a Kingfisher fantasy on this list. Nettle & Bone is a quest story about a woman who is determined to save her sister from an abusive marriage.

The Silverblood Promise by James Logan. This excellent fantasy debut follows a man on a mission to unravel a mysterious message from his dead father.

The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong. This cozy, low stakes fantasy follows a traveling fortune teller and her found family as she agrees to help a man find his missing daughter.

What are some of your favorite stories involving travel? Have you read any on this list?

  1. I already have three of these on my TBR list – The Bone Ships, The Silverblood Promise and Nettle & Bone.
Might have to add Greenteeth and The Teller of Small Fortunes too 😀

I saw someone reading Greenteeth on BookTube and now I need to get my hands on a copy. I don’t know why I feel like I might like it. Some good sounding and looking books here!

I can’t wait to try The Teller of Small Fortunes and The Silverblood Promise. 🙂

  4. Lately, I’ve been appreciating some of the traveling done in Fritz Leiber’s Lankhmar stories. The only one of the above books I’ve read yet is The Teller of Small Fortunes, though there’s several others there I’d hoped to read by now.

I do enjoy travel stories, and it’s one of those things you find frequently in fantasies.

  5. I’ll endorse your recommendation regarding Greenteeth, which I absolutely loved. And I’ve just got hold of the audiobook of Nettle & Bone, which I’m looking forward to tucking into.
