Welcome to May! This month is the annual fantasy celebration Wyrd & Wonder, and I hope to participate, although I don’t have any firm plans yet. But expect some fantasy reviews and of course, lists! This year’s theme is “water,” as you can see by the mermaid banner above. Click on the link to learn more about the event! Otherwise, this seems to be a quieter month for new SFF releases, since my plate is more manageable than normal, lol. Here’s what I hope to read this month:

I like this month’s mix of genres, hopefully it will keep things interesting! Starting off with some horror: The Night Birds by Christopher Golden. To be honest, I’m not sure what this book is about, lol. The blurb doesn’t seem to have a clear plot. But it’s getting good reviews and I’m curious to read it.

The Incandescent by Emily Tesh. I’ve enjoyed a couple of Tesh’s novellas, but this will be my first time reading a full length novel of hers. I’m ready a for a good fantasy dark academia story! *Wyrd & Wonder read

Anji Kills a King by Evan Leikam has some good reviews and this will be another *Wyrd & Wonder read

A Letter From the Lonesome Shore by Sylvia Cathrall. This is book two in this very imaginative fantasy duology, and I can’t wait to read it. In fact, it’s the perfect book for Wyrd & Wonder since it takes place in and around the water. *Wyrd & Wonder read

Overgrowth by Mira Grant. Now onto another highly anticipated horror book! Described as alien invasion body horror, I know this is going to be good.

The Artist of Blackberry Grange by Paulette Kennedy. This is a historical gothic paranormal mystery (that’s actually a lot to live up to!). I enjoyed this author’s last book and I’m excited to read this one too.

A Spell For Change by Nicole Jarvis. This is a historical fantasy that revolves around witches, and isn’t the cover lovely? *Wyrd & Wonder read

Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry. This is a romantasy from the same publisher who brought us Fourth Wing, and I’m very curious about it, especially since the Goodreads ratings are so high. *Wyrd & Wonder read

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie. This is the start to a new fantasy series, and I’m ready to try Joe Abercrombie again (my first attempt wasn’t very successful). It sounds amazing! *Wyrd & Wonder read

We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough. Pinborough is another author I haven’t read in a while, but I’m excited to have a good gothic horror on the list this month!

Behooved by M. Stevenson. This romantasy sounds very different, which is one reason I want to read it. Check out the blurb!

Do we have any books in common this month? What are you looking forward to reading?

  1. The Artist of Blackberry Grange is on my TBR list too. I think I have a few books by this author already but haven’t read any yet, so will look out for your review of this one.
    Enjoy all your books 😀

  2. I am participating in Wyrd and Wonder too!! But I will post my TBR Sunday on the blog. We have The Incandescent in common and I am quite curious to start that one because I never read anything by the author! And The Devils!! I don’t have it on my TBR because I planned to buy it as a souvenir from my Summer vacations but I just discovered that they are translating it in Italian and it will come out in May too, so I just pre-ordered it! And I am soooooooo excited!!
You mentioned a ton of interesting books, I hope you will love them all!!

I see some good looking books here. I can’t wait to hear what you think of the new Mira Grant book. I want to read it and have a copy already, but it is a book club pick for my horror on-line book club in a few months. I hope to read The Night Birds too and I’m thinking of preordering The Devils. I’m not sure I will like it and haven’t read the author, but I am VERY curious. Hope you have a wonderful month!

I’m curious about The Devils too. And Overgrowth is really good so far! Not what I expected but I’m enjoying it.

  4. Anji Kills a King has such an interest cover. I’m going to look up the book now. I also have The Incandescent to read.

  5. Roberta R.

    Overgrowth is great, so you’re in for a treat…but of course I’m biased ;D (LOL, not really – I’ve had a few McGuire/Grant books I enjoyed less…).

The cover of Anji Kills a King is one that caught my attention when I first saw it in an online bookshop. I’ll be interested to see what you think of it.

  7. 11 books? What will you do with your extra time lol. Would you like to pick up my slack, then? Please?

  8. TNT

I’m definitely looking forward to A Letter from the Lonesome Shore! Thanks for the list and happy reading.

  9. I’m only aware of a couple of these, the rest are new to me, so looking forward to learning more as you read and review them.

  10. Behooved is on my list of new releases of May but I don’t know if I’ll get around to it since I have a lot of arcs and my mood reading is off the charts lately haha

  11. I’ve been so out of it, I just realized it’s May and of course it’s wyrd and wonder month. Well, I’m too unprepared to have anything planned but I’m sure I’ll read a lot of fantasy this month anyway!

The Water Theme looks so beautiful! I am currently reading The Water Walls by iLana Markarov which matches perfectly, i think it is going to be my favorite. I am going to read Anji Kills a King next
