Future Fiction #327 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

How about three new horror books? Take a look:

For fans of Midsommar, Catriona Ward, and Sarah Gailey, this addictively readable modern horror novel unfolds like a movie with a climax you’ll never see coming

When Jen Monre hears her father’s remains have been found, she returns home to disprove his death, only to find the forests of rural Washington are hiding horrors beyond imagining

Seven years ago, Jen Monre left behind her hometown of Barrow, Washington after her father, a forest ranger passionate about protecting old trees from the aggressive logging business that runs their small town, vanished seemingly into thin air. She never wanted to come home again. Until she gets a her father’s remains have been found. It seems impossible. So Jen goes home, determined to find out what really happened to her father. And when her ex-boyfriend proposes a camping trip into the woods in her father’s memory, it feels like the opportunity Jen had been hoping to find her father. To find the truth.

But what she finds instead may be something deeper, darker and deadlier than she could have ever imagined.

They Fear Not Men in the Woods by Gretchen McNeil. Releases in September 2025 from DAW Books. It’s been years since I’ve read one of McNeil’s books, so I’m very curious about this one.

When Everly’s husband and young daughter die in a car crash she finds out nothing is quite what she thought… Secrets, lies and grief collide in this funny, tragic, intimate and utterly compelling horror novella from the award-winning author. Perfect for fans of Rachel Harrison, Delilah S. Dawson, Sarah Gailey and Sarah-Maria Griffin.

Writer Everly Bainbridge’s life is left in ruins when her husband takes their child to the supermarket one day and a lorry collides with their car. After the accident, a lawyer appears on her doorstep and tells her her husband was not who he said he was and she is a very rich widow. She retreats to a lonely house in the countryside to recover. But there’s a well in the cellar, a spectacularly cold room, and one night, Everly wakes up with a foot hanging over the emptiness of the well and the echo of her daughter’s voice in her ears…

A short, sharp, emotionally layered story of horrific secrets and dangerous lies, this dark, fierce gem of a novella will keep you turning the pages late into the night…

The Cold House by A.G. Slatter. Releases in October 2025 from Titan Books. I’ve really enjoyed A.G. Slatter’s books in the past, so I’m excited to see she has a horror novella coming out this year!

An actress desperate to reclaim her fame must survive the real-life plot of the horror movie that made her famous in this psychologically twisted locked-room thriller influenced by ’90s slasher films.

Twenty years ago, Ella Winters was the it girl. She made a name for herself in Hollywood and throughout America as the final survivor in the cult-classic slasher Grad Night. But the real horror is what happened when the cameras weren’t rolling—something terrible that Ella and her co-stars agreed never to speak of again. Shortly after the movie’s premiere, Ella disappeared from the acting scene under the pretense of caring for her ailing mother, hoping for a quiet life out of the spotlight to ease her guilty mind.

Now, after her mother’s passing, Ella has decided to return to the silver screen. And with the cast and crew of Grad Night in the process of filming a reunion documentary, Ella has the perfect ticket back into Hollywood’s good graces. Weighed down by the secret she’s been keeping all these years, Ella apprehensively makes the trip to the original set—a cabin in rural Tennessee—to reunite with her castmates for the first time in over a decade. But when the actors begin to meet the exact gruesome fates of the characters they originally played, falling victim to someone dressed as the Grad Night villain, it’s clear their secret is out.

Now, the question Can the final girl survive one last nightmare?

Smile For the Cameras by Miranda Smith. Releases in June 2025 from Bantam. I have a soft spot for the subgenre of movie horror, and I may need to check this out!

  1. Ooooh They Fear Not Men in the Woods sounds good and creepy and mysterious. I love a book where a part of the story is set in woods.

The Cold House sounds creepy as well as emotional. And a novella! Sometimes shorter books can pack quite the punch.

I love that Smile For the Cameras is influenced by ’90s slasher films. Also love that last sentence in the synopsis: can the final girl survive one last nightmare? Yes, I’d love to read it!

  2. Lauren Always Me

  3. I’m curious about the first one, I think I’ll waif for some reviews but may add it to my TBR based on what I hear. The novellas intriguing too, especially given all the praise I’ve heard for the authors latest book. I hope you enjoy all of these.

Thanks Charlotte, I think you would enjoy A.G. Slatter, especially since you read a lot of fantasy.

  4. I loooove the cover for They Fear Not Men in the Woods! That one is on my list for sure. I am pretty curious about The Cold House too- though kid deaths are sometimes a little hard for me to handle, it does mention humor, so maybe!
