Fave January book: Hank’s, no doubt. I didn’t love Adrift as much as I hoped to. The protagonist is engaging, the turtles are neat…there’s a message, if a bit muddled (why shouldn’t Nadya resent the river giving her a water prosthetic? McGuire addressed the issue, but she didn’t manage to quite convince me)…but the ending??? I didn’t remember how old Nadya was in Sugar Sky, and how many years she had stayed at the school…so when I read what I read, I felt betrayed. Why should her door work differently from all the other ones? Also, she was as sure as she could be, so the way her “slipping” was explained made no sense to me.

Yes, that ending was weird. That’s one reason I question the series being told out of order. Especially since Sugar Sky came out 7 years ago, who’s going to remember the story?

You had a really great reading month. Mine was a bit slow number wise but I did have some enjoyable reads.

  3. It looks like you’ve read some fantastic books in January. Your reviews have made me eager to get to Greenteeth & Wooing The Witch Queen in particular. Some of the others have helped me decide whether I should prioritise backlist or new books by some of the authors too. I hope February brings even more fantastic books your way. I didn’t read as much as I hoped in January, I got very side tracked by trying to do too much blogging wise, but my favourite book was Mother Of Rome.

  4. I’m hoping to have some time to check out your reviews at home this week, since the stupid school internet blocks your blog, lol. Looks like some good reads for sure, here’s hoping February has more good reads!

  5. Always great to see your ratings skewed to the upper end, means a good month. 🙂 My favorite of January was probably the graphic novel, The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn by Tri Vuong. It’s about a paranormal investigator who’s really just a floating skull, and some of the interesting situations he gets himself into. Lots of fun.
