Over-Booked [203] – January Book Haul

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

It’s the last Saturday of the month, so it’s time for my January book haul. This is a smaller than normal haul, but I can’t complain because there are some exciting books in it! Here are the books I received in the mail and from NetGalley this month:

Books in the mail for review:

I’m starting out with a lovely haul courtesy of Orbit Books, and the first one is The Third Rule of Time Travel by Philip Fracassi, one of my most anticipated books of 2025.

Jumping to the second row, I also received Ardent Violet and the Infinite Eye by Alex White. I’ve been anticipating this book, which came out in December, so I just need to squeeze it in, hopefully sooner than later.

I just posted my review of Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill, which was amazing! Please don’t miss this book if you’re a fan of T. Kingfisher or the Emily Wilde books.

And finally from Orbit, On Vicious Worlds by Bethany Jacobs is a late arrival, and I should have just read the eARC while I was waiting for it, but hopefully I can pick it up soon. I loved the first book in the series:-)

Backtracking a bit, big thanks to Titan Books for a copy of A Palace Near the Wind by Ai Jiang. I’m a big fan of her books so of course I’m excited to read this:-)

Finally, I was so excited to receive a last minute copy of Tartufo by Kira Jane Buxton from Grand Central Publishing. I may not get to it this month, but for sure in February, look for my review.

Digital books for review:

As you can see I’m doing pretty well with backing off NetGalley requests. Just five this month!

The Farmhouse by Chelsea Conradt. This is a “haunted farmhouse” story, and I’m not sure I’ve ever read one of those. But it sounds very creepy.

The Macabre by Kosoko Jackson. Kosoko Jackson has written a bunch of YA books, some of which are on my TBR, and I believe this is his first adult novel. It involves cursed paintings, and I’m excited to check it out!

Sometimes you request a book and then have regrets, lol. Such is the case with Slayers, Every One of Us by Kristin Russo and Jenny Owen Youngs. I guess it could be good? I mean it’s Buffy and the writers host a Buffy podcast. But it’s also about a relationship breakup which I’m not too keen on reading about. I guess we’ll see. If I have time…

Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito. I heard about this book from Barb so I decided to request it. Even though it adds another book to my February pile, I’m very curious.

And I’m excited to have a copy of The Ghost Woods by C.J. Cooke. This comes out in April so I won’t be reading it right away, but it sounds good:-)

Big thanks to Poisoned Pen Press, Harper Voyager, St. Martin’s Press, Liverlight, and Berkley:-D

Are you planning to read any of these books?

  1. I’m really curious about Victorian Psycho. I can’t quite make up my mind about it so will look out for your review.
The Ghost Woods has a great cover. I’ve only read one book by this author but enjoyed it enough to want to read more.
Hope you enjoy all these books 😀

  2. Ooh I’ve got that Ai Jiang novella on my TBR but didn’t realise she’d written other books. I’ll have to check them out. It’s so exciting that you’ve gotten a physical copy of one of your most anticipated books too. I hope you enjoy it.

I really hope the Slayers book works for you given your doubts and I’m curious to see what you think of Victoria Psycho. The title caught my eye recently so it’ll be good to know what it’s like.

I hope you enjoy all of these.

Oh I know all about requesting regret, Tammy! I’ve read the synopsis of that book and wouldn’t be too excited too since it has a a relationship breakup. But you never know!

  4. I made a late-in-the-game decision to read two of the Orbit Books, Greenteeth and The Third Rule of Time Travel, and now just have to figure out how to fit them into my reading schedule. Too many books! Hope you enjoy all of these — I’m looking forward to hearing about Tartufo, since I love her earlier books.

  5. The only one currently on my radar is Tartufo, but that could all change if you end up reading, enjoying and reviewing some of the others. 🙂
