Over-Booked [200] – October Book Haul

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

I have a pretty small book haul this month, which doesn’t surprise me as the year is winding down and I’m not taking on as many review books at the moment. Here are the books I acquired in October:

Books in the mail for review:

Huge thanks to Quirk Books for a copy of Wake Up and Open Your Eyes by Clay McLeod Chapman. I always enjoy Chapman’s books, and this sounds very creepy. This is a January release, and I can’t wait!

The Last One by Rachel Howzell Hall is the author’s first venture into romantasy, and I’m very curious about it. Big thanks to Red Tower for sending this lovely ARC!

I was thrilled to receive a copy of T.J. Klune’s next book, The Bones Beneath My Skin. This will be my first Klune book, believe it or not. The blurb is comparing the story to Stranger Things, which makes me want to read it even more! Big thanks to Tor!

You Better Watch Out by James S. Murray & Darren Wearmouth is a Christmas themed serial killer thriller that sounds like so much fun. This is already out, and I hope to squeeze it in soon. With thanks to St. Martin’s Press for the review copy:-)

Courtesy of Grand Central, I received the newly released paperback of The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch by Melinda Taub. I remember wanting to read this when it was first released, so I jumped at the opportunity to review the paperback.

And with thanks to Blackstone Publishing, I received a beautiful hardcover of American Ghoul by Michelle McGill-Vargas. I really enjoyed this, and I’m happy to have a copy for my library.

And last but not least, Tor Books offered me a copy of the newly released paperback of Starling House by Alix E. Harrow, which I’ve already read and enjoyed. I could not turn down this beautiful copy with sprayed purple edges!

Digital books for review:

With one exception, all of these books are 2025 releases, so I won’t be reading them for a while.

Starting with one I’m super excited for, Cold Eternity by S.A. Barnes. I hope to get a physical review copy at some point, but I just had to download the NetGalley copy too.

Listen to Your Sister by Neena Viel is a horror debut that sounds fantastic! The publisher is comparing it to a Jordan Peele movie, so of course I need to check it out.

After completely missing out on Edward Ashton’s last two books, I grabbed his upcoming The Fourth Consort when it was “read now” on NetGalley. I think it’s going to have a lot of humor, I can’t wait:-)

Jasper Bark contacted me and asked if I’d like to try Draw You In, the first in a trilogy. I couldn’t resist for a couple of reasons. First, he wrote me the best email pitch, and also the book sounds really good. Not sure when I’ll read this, but I’m hoping by the end of the year.

The Antidote by Karen Russell might look like it doesn’t belong on this blog, but I’m a long time Karen Russell fan and I had to request it. This sounds absolutely brilliant: it’s historical fiction set in the Dust Bowl, but it appears to be a retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Russell always adds speculative elements to her fiction, which is why I love her so much!

And I had to download Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab, even though it doesn’t have a final cover yet. I’m sure lots of readers are excited for this!

Big thanks to Tor Nightfire, St. Martin’s Griffin, St. Martin’s Press, Jasper Bark, Knopf and Tor Books:-D

Are you planning to read any of these books?

  1. I’m definitely looking forward to the new V. E. Schwab book, and I’m insanely jealous that you have a copy of The Bones Beneath My Skin! (I have it on Kindle already, but I’m eagerly awaiting my hardcover edition when it’s released). I really enjoyed the Lydia Bennet book — hope you do too!

  2. I’ve yet to try anything by T.J. K lune and until recently the comparison to Stranger Things wouldn’t have meant much to me as I’d not seen it. I’ve finished season one and I’m watching season two and I’m completely hooked. 🙂

And that cover for Draw You In really makes me cringe, which means “well done!”

  3. Ooh that Midnight Soil arc is very exciting!! And that copy of Starling House is stunning too. I’m hoping to treat myself to the hardback sometime as I love the endpages in it and adored the story. I can’t wait to see what the author will write next. You’re also not alone in not having read anything by Klune yet. Hopefully you’ll enjoy your first experience of their work.
