Over-Booked [189] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

Despite lots of snow and bad driving conditions (shout out to the postal service and UPS for strapping on chains and delivering books to me despite the weather!), I’ve had a surprising amount of book mail show up in the last two weeks. Some of these I’ve already read on my Kindle, so I’m a little bit ahead. I’ve also (foolishly perhaps) been requesting books on NetGalley and getting approved, so my digital pile is pretty sizable as well. Here are my latest book acquisitions:

Books in the mail for review:

The Bad Ones by Melissa Albert. I’ve already read this and loved it! I’m on the blog tour, so look for my review on 2/22. This is an excellent YA mystery/horror from a talented author. Huge thanks to Flatiron Books:-)

A Haunting in the Arctic by C.J. Cooke. I was very surprised to be offered a physical review copy of this book, but heck yeah I accepted! I’ll be reading and reviewing this historical arctic horror novel this month. Thank you Berkley!

I’m currently reading The Butcher of the Forest, my first experience with Premee Mohamed, and I absolutely love her writing. This is a “spooky, dangerous forest” tale, and I’ll post my review next week. Big thanks to Tordotcom for the review copy!

I didn’t know much about Running Close to the Wind by Alexandra Rowland when I accepted it for review, but the more I hear about it, the more excited I am to read it! Big thanks to Tor for this beautiful copy.

With thanks to Wunderkind PR and DAW Books for the next two books! Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell has a long, strange title, but I’m pretty sure this is going to be a “me” book. And I have been seeing rave reviews for Floating Hotel by Grace Curtis, so I’m very happy to have a chance to read it.

Huge thanks to Tor/Bramble for a copy of Fiasco by Constance Fay, the sequel to the really fun Calamity. This sequel focuses on a different couple, so it should be a good time.

Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky was a surprise arrival from Tordotcom, and I couldn’t be happier to have this. This is a June release that’s being compared to the Murderbot books and Red Shirts, and yes, that sounds the perfect mash-up:-)

With thanks to Orbit and Redhook for the first two books (and I’ve already read both!) I enjoyed An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson, but I’m not sure it was the 5 star read I was hoping for. The Ghosts of Beatrice Bird by Louisa Morgan made my Top 5 of 2023, so obviously I loved it.

Many thanks to Blackstone for this beautiful copy of Grand Theft AI by James Cox. I wasn’t aware of this until the publicist contacted me, and now I’m very excited to read it.

Finally, big thanks to Orbit for That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf (longest title ever!) and That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Human by Kimberly Lemming. I believe the first book in the series is on the way, so I’ll wait for that before I start this series. These books sound like so much fun!

Digital books for review:

Oh boy, so many new digital titles, OMG what was I thinking?? lol

The Redemption of Morgan Bright by Chris Panatier promises to be a spooky, weird horror story that revolves around an asylum.

Heads Will Roll by Josh Winning is one I’m super excited for. However, for some reason this publisher does not provide Kindle copies  (G.P. Putnam’s Sons), and I forget every time I request a book from them. Grr. I need to figure out if I can convert it to epub or if I’ll be stuck reading it on my phone.

The Daughters’ War by Christopher Buehlman is the prequel to The Blacktongue Thief, and I have been seeing lots of great reviews already for this book.

The Stardust Grail by Yume Kitasei is the author’s sophomore book, and it looks to be another exciting space opera.

Wilderness Reform by Matthew Query and Harrison Query is one I just heard about from Lynn, and I immediately requested it on NetGalley. I had heard a lot about the authors’ last book Old Country but never got to read it.

I recently featured Tiny Threads by Lilliam Rivera on Future Fiction, so I was happy to be approved for this unique sounding title.

Sacrificial Animals by Kailee Pedersen sounds cool: it’s a supernatural horror story based on ancient Chinese mythology.

The Hunter’s Gambit by Ciel Pierlot will be the second book I’ve read from this author. I absolutely loved Bluebird, so I’m looking forward to diving into this one.

It’s very rare that I accept indie or small press books if I’ve never read anything from that publisher, but something about Nicole Wolverton’s email convinced me to try A Misfortune of Lake Monsters. This sounds like a really good story about a lake monster, but with layers.

Indian Burial Ground by Nick Medina was also a Future Fiction pick, and after being offered this book about four or five times (lol), I finally caved and accepted it. And I’m pretty sure I’ll love it:-)

And last but not least, A Friend Indeed by Elka Ray appears to be a murder/cover-up thriller that sounds really good.

With thanks to Angry Robot, Berkley, Cam Cat Books, G.P. Putnam’s Sons, Tor Books, Flatiron Books, Atria/Emily Bestler Books, Del Rey, St. Martin’s Press and Blackstone:-D

I think because it’s the beginning of the year, there are so many awesome sounding books popping up on NetGalley, it’s impossible to say no:-)

  1. Another great haul, so many books! That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf caught my eye just because of the title and I’ve just found out that series is on KU at the moment so I’m a little bit tempted to give the first book a try 😀

  2. “I’ve also (foolishly perhaps) been requesting books on NetGalley and getting approved, so my digital pile is pretty sizable as well.”
Mine too – at least for my capability to write reviews in due time lately LOL (cries).

I have an ARC of Floating Hotel that I should have read eons ago…I’ve been slacking on reviews lately, which put a huge dent in my reading. Still I’m bummed that Winning’s current publisher hates me LOL – second time in a row that they decline my requests.

Oh shoot, that’s too bad about the Winning book. Don’t you know him? Maybe he’ll send you a copy?

  3. Without a doubt, my favorite title in this group is Someone You Can Build a Nest In. I don’t even need a description to pique my interest with that one. 🙂

  4. Wowww this is a huge haul!!! I’ve started to see FIASCO pop up on my Twitter timeline here and there. I probably won’t request it, unfortunately. I read CALAMITY and enjoyed it, but not quite enough to add its sequel to my hefty TBR. And sorry to see AN EDUCATION IN MALICE didn’t quite seem to live up to your expectations?? 🙁

  5. So many good books! That Kimberly Lemming series looks like fun! And the Melissa Albert one is on my TBR too. I was wondering if you had any of that bad weather they were talking about even on our news this week. That’s awesome your postal workers still got your mail delivered. Ours kind of slacked during out last snowstorm I thought. Hope you have a good week!

All of California has had bad weather for the past week or two, but the worst of the storms are over. Thanks Lisa, you too!
