What’s On My Plate – February 2024

Welcome to February, otherwise known as the busiest month in SFF publishing, lol. There are a TON  of new releases this month, and I’ll be reading only a fraction of them. If I had more time I’d read a bunch that aren’t on this list, but I’ve had to pick and choose, and even then I doubt I’ll get through all of these. But as always, I’m going to try! This is also a leap year, so we get an extra day of reading this February. Here are the books I hope to read this month:

I’m so excited to start An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson, and I will be reading it next week for sure. This is a dark academia story, a trope I don’t read enough of.

Melissa Albert jumped onto my “must read” list a couple of years ago with Our Crooked Hearts, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting a new book from her. The Bad Ones is a YA speculative mystery that I just cracked open, so look for a review soon.

What Feasts At Night by T. Kingfisher is the sequel to What Moves the Dead, which I loved. It will be interesting to see what she does with this, since the first book didn’t feel like the start of a series.

I’ve already read the first chapter of The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden, just to check out the style, and I was immediately sucked in. I’m looking forward to getting back to it:-)

I’ve heard good things about The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett, a new series that apparently harkens back to his Divine Cities series, which I loved.

A Haunting in the Arctic by C.J. Cooke is another one I’m excited to read after seeing some rave reviews.

The Briar Book of the Dead by A.G. Slatter is getting awesome reviews so far! It’s got witches and vampires, so of course I’m excited to read it:-)

I’ve already read The Frame-Up by Gwenda Bond, so look for my review next week. Despite some negative reviews on Goodreads, I actually had a pretty good time with it. I will explain more in my review:-)

My TBR Jar book for February is Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage. I have to admit I cheated this month and just picked this one, mostly because of the page count. I have a lot of BIG books in my TBR jar, and I knew February was going to be really busy with review books, so I figured I’d hand pick the book this one month.

Fathomfolk by Eliza Chen is getting some mixed reviews, so I’m going into this one with low expectations and hoping to be surprised.

Inspired by Sri Lankan folklore, Island Witch by Amanda Jayatissa is a historical fantasy with gothic elements, and it sounds fantastic!

The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown is a fantasy about books, so it’s a no brainer to read this one!

Finally, The Wedding Party by L.R. Jones is a book I requested on a whim, but the reviews are not so good on Goodreads, so I’m a little worried about it. Now that I think about it, I was interested because of the Stanley Hotel setting. We shall see!

Do we have any February books in common? What are you excited to read this month?

  1. There are so many good books out this month. Looking forward to your thoughts on An Education in Malice, the new T. Kingfisher, and The Tainted Cup, which definitely sounds like one I want to read 😀

  2. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader

I have read and been impressed by An Education in Malice while Fathomfolk is very promising but left me hungry..

  3. I wondered what the TBR jar pick would be. That’s great you could work this one in, especially since the sequel was recently announced. I have WAY too many books to read this month – buddy reads, 2 book club reads and some new releases. Can’t February be 45 days long???

  4. I hadn’t heard about The Wedding Party… but Stanley Hotel? Sign me up!! Somehow I didn’t have Briar Book of the Dead on my radar, but I do want to read it. So many great books to look forward to this month… I’m already worried about keeping up!

  5. Looks like a great list to me. I look forward to seeing which you choose and what you think.. The only February release I’m currently reading is The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard, and I’m very much enjoying it so far. The tagline for it: A literary speculative novel about an isolated town neighbored by its own past and future.

  6. I like to see that THE WARM HANDS OF GHOSTS is engaging from the first chapter! Sounds promising. I feel like it was already a stretch for me to put FATHOMFOLK on my TBR so I might end up not picking it up at all. Will be curious to hear your thoughts on that one.

  7. Thank goodness we have an extra day of reading this month, lol!! I didn’t even request that much for February, but I’m behind nonetheless. It doesn’t help that I’m working my way through HOUSE OF FLAME AND SHADOW so I don’t get spoiled…that book is like 850 pages!!

  8. I didn’t realize this was a leap year until you mentioned it!! Anyway, there are so many interesting books waiting for you!! I have already read one of them, An Education in Malice, I am currently reading another, The Tainted Cup, and I gope to read at least another one, Fathomfolk. But there are a couple of others on my radar! I am looking forward to your thoughts on all of them!
