Over-Booked [188] – January Book Haul

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

My mailbox has been (sadly) empty all month, with only a few books trickling in. It’s funny because I have at least 15 outstanding physical books on the way that publishers have said they are mailing, but either the mail’s slow or publishers are, lol. On the flip side, my digital haul has exploded, which always happens in January! Here are the books I’ve received this month:

Books in the mail for review:

I’m happy to say I’ve read the first three books!

Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett was a delightful sequel. Big thanks to Del Rey for this beautiful finished copy!

The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Nayler was my first experience with this author, and it was such an emotional, unique story. Hugs to Tordotcom for the finished copy, it’s lovely.

The Star and the Strange Moon by Constance Sayers was another winning story by this very talented author. Big thanks to the Orbit/Redhook team for sending along the finished copy:-)

With thanks to Datura, I received a copy of The Glass Woman by Alice McIlroy. This was released in January, but I didn’t receive it in time to read and review it this month, so hopefully I can squeeze it in next month.

And also from Orbit, this gorgeous ARC of Fathomfolk by Eliza Chan showed up, and I’ll be reading it in February.

Digital books for review:

Ronald Malfi has a new book out this year and I couldn’t be more excited to read it! Small Town Horror sounds like it’s got a similar vibe as Black Mouth, a book I loved. Can’t wait!

After featuring it on Future Fiction, I was thrilled to get a very fast approval for A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston. If it’s anywhere as good as The Seven Year Slip, I know I’ll love this too.

I’m also very happy that I was approved for The Gathering by C.J. Tudor. This will be my second Tudor book after The Drift, which I really had fun with.

Rob Hart is another favorite author, and even though his books are a little goofy, I always have a great time reading them. I’m hoping for the same with Assassins Anonymous!

Now for a trio of “book” books: First, The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown sounds magical and romantic:-)

I was offered The Book That Broke the World by Mark Lawrence, but I hadn’t read the first book in the series, The Book That Wouldn’t Burn, so the publicist offered me both books. I’m excited to dive into this series, my fellow bloggers love it!

With thanks to Titan Books, Berkley, Ballentine Books, G.P. Putnam’s Sons, William Morrow and Ace:-D

Are you planning to read any of these books?

  1. This is a great haul.
Can’t wait to read Emily Wilde book 2, especially as it’s getting such good reviews.
Assassins Anonymous is new-to-me but I want to know more 😀

  2. I’m not a fan of Mark Lawrence, but these recent books have been tempting me. I anticipate your opinions with great… anticipation? And await your opinion on Tordotcom’s rebrand

  3. I really like the covers for both Fathomfolk and The Gathering. There are a bunch of books and authors I’d like to try in this batch. Always looking forward to Malfi’s next book. Would like to try Tudor. And been looking forward to trying those Lawrence Book books.

  4. I see you got your copy of The Gathering. Hope we both end up loving that one. Some exciting books here. I read Mark Lawrence once and I don’t think he is an author for me but his books always look and sound so good. I really need to read The Seven Year Slip. I LOVED LOVED LOVED her first book.
