Future Fiction #263 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Today I’m sharing three upcoming fantasies, take a look:

A woman journeys into a submerged world of gods and myth to save her home in this powerful historical fantasy that shines a light on the drowned Black towns of the American South.

“Our home began, as all things do, with a wish.”

Jane Edwards hasn’t spoken since she was eleven years old, when armed riders expelled her family from their hometown along with every other Black resident. Now, twelve years later, she’s found a haven in the all-Black town of Awenasa. But the construction of a dam promises to wash her home under the waters of the new lake.

Jane will do anything to save the community that sheltered her. So, when a man with uncanny abilities arrives in town asking strange questions, she wonders if he’s might be the key. But as the stranger hints at gods and ancestral magic, Jane is captivated by a bigger mystery. She knows this man. Only the last time she saw him, he was dead. His body laid to rest in a rushing river.

Who is the stranger and what is he really doing in Awenasa? To find those answers, Jane will journey into a sunken world, a land of capricious gods and unsung myths, of salvation and dreams made real. But the flood waters are rising. To gain the miracle she desires, Jane will have to find her voice again and finally face the trauma of the past.

Daughter of the Merciful Deep by Leslye Penelope. Releases in June 2024 from Redhook. Wow, I love this cover so much! This appears to be a Little Mermaid retelling, I think? In any case, I’m intrigued by this blurb. This is definitely on my TBR:-)

From the award nominated author of Bluebird comes a riveting, spicy fantasy, featuring malevolent vampires and a locked-room escape adventure, perfect for fans of Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff.

The city of Mavazem is plagued by aristocratic vampires who terrorise the human citizens. But Kazan Korvic refuses to cower. As an expert blacksmith with a sharp grifter’s eye, her specialty lies in crafting, and using, weapons designed to kill the vicious creatures.

But, turns out, sword skills aren’t quite enough when a whole group of vampires attack her and steal her magical weapon. Kazan is captured and forced to attend the Vampire Court where she is forced to act as their ‘Queen’. For three days she will waited and doted upon, until the lavish party where her reign will end in extravagant feast… and Kazan as the main course!

Kazan plans to find her sword and get out, except with no allies in the castle, Kazan can feel the walls closing in. But she soon realises that she is not just trapped with these bloodthirsty bastards, they’re trapped with her too. And they’re not prepared for just how far she’s willing to go to survive.

The Hunter’s Gambit by Ciel Pierlot. Releases in September from Angry Robot. OK, I’m not crazy about this generic looking cover, but all I need to see is “vampires” and I’m hooked. This is giving me The Serpent & the Wings of Night vibes, and I am here for it! Plus I loved Pierlot’s last book Bluebird.

A woman searches for her missing father in order to reconcile the many strange and fantastical secrets of her past before she loses herself completely in this deeply profound and magical novel by Audrey Burges.

Keryth Miller is disappearing.

Between the growing distance between herself and her husband, the demands of two teenage daughters, and an all-encompassing burnout, she sometimes feels herself fading away. Actual translucence, though—that’s new. When Keryth wakes up one morning with her hand completely gone, she is frantic. But she quickly realizes two things: If she is disappearing, it’s because her father, an artist with the otherworldly ability to literally capture life in his art, is drawing her. And if he’s drawing her, that means he’s still alive.

But where has he been for the past twenty-five years, and why is he doing the one thing he always warned her not to? Never draw from life, Keryth. Every line exacts a cost. As Keryth continues to slowly fade away, she retraces what she believes to be her father’s last steps through the many homes of her past, determined to find him before it’s too late and she disappears entirely.

A House Like An Accordion by Audrey Burges. Releases in May 2024 from Ace. I was just offered a review copy of this book, which wasn’t even on my radar, and so I had to share it today. The cover is spectacular, and the story sounds amazing. A magical story based around an artist? I can’t wait:-)

  1. Daughter of the Merciful Deep sounds REALLY good! And it does have Little Mermaid vibes so I’m definitely intrigued.

The Hunter’s Gambit also sounds good. If it has vampires I must read it. There are so many vampire books coming out this year. I love it!

A House Like An Accordion has a really unique premise. I’ve never heard anything similar. I love that the story has something to do with art.

  2. I almost featured Daughter of the Merciful Deep this week so not surprised to see it here. I’m really curious about that one. I also tend to love the books Angry Robot publishes. I would not have associated The Hunter’s Gambit with vampires but glad you brought it to my attention.

The cover doesn’t say “vampire” but neither did the cover for The Serpent and the Wings of Night, so there’s a good chance I’ll love it!

  3. I’m curious about A House Like An Accordion. Hard to really tell from small blurbs, but they’re enough to get one’s attention.

  4. This is my favorite series of the series posts that you do…I’m always finding new stuff. All 3 of these look interesting, but I think the best fit for me is THE HUNTER’S GAMBIT. The premise of DUAGHTER OF THE MERCIFUL DEEP intrigues me, but I have a feeling my reading load at the time might determine whether I click that widget for Redhook/Orbit.
