Buffy’s Corner 1/7/24 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

I hope everyone had a good week! Purely by accident, I started watching Virgin River on Netflix, when it popped up as a suggestion. I had been following the Virgin River buddy read that Stormi and Barb did last year, and I’ve always been curious about it. And I’m hooked! The TV show is kind of soapy and overly dramatic, and I can’t say the acting is all that great in some cases, but I love all the drama, and I love the way so many different storylines are integrated into the show. I glanced at the book descriptions and it seems the show has combined all of them at once, probably for the sake of good TV. Let me know if you’ve watched it too, or if you’ve read the books!

Upcoming reads & reviews:

Look for at least two reviews this week: tomorrow is The Heiress, which is my first 5 star book of the year, and Thursday look for my review of Thirteen Ways to Kill Lulabelle Rock, which I also loved. I’m currently reading The Serpent and the Wings of Night, a dark vampire romance tale involving a fight to the death competition, and so far I’m enjoying it! And Deep Freeze will probably be my next read after that.

Other posts this week:

On Tuesday, I’m starting off my 2024 Most Anticipated Books of the Year posts and sharing my first quarter picks, don’t miss it! And just as I suspected, publishers are starting to roll out lots of cover reveals for the new year, so don’t miss Future Fiction on Wednesday.

  1. The books are so nice and sweet and fluffy! the tv show VR took the tiny bit of drama and EXPANDED it over a very long period and it’s very eyerolly to me when I watch it…lol. I can see why those who have not read the books would really enjoy it much more than I do when I hate watch it…lol. Jack and Mel!! 🙂

Have a great week and happy reading!

  2. And school is back in for only three days and I’m behind on reading reviews again! You’ve got several I need to check out! I know from people who have read all the Outlander books, as well as even reading the second book as I watched season 7 that they have pulled things in from later book in the earlier seasons, and some things from earlier books pop up in the later series. Hope you have a good week!

  3. I watched the first few seasons of Virgin River but I can’t deal with the manufactured drama at the moment so I might be a while til I start watching it again.
I signed up for a challenge focusing on fantasy reads this year so I’ll be looking for recommendations from your upcoming posts.

Wishing you a great reading week

  4. I read the first book in Virgin River and it was fine. Then I watched the Netflix show and it was too overly dramatic for me. The book was better. But I didn’t really continue either one. I know it’s popular but it just wasn’t my favorite. I regularly read romance and so probably I’d do fine with the books. I’m glad you can enjoy it!

  5. I have watched ALL of Virgin River… and it’s ridiculous, but I also can’t stop watching! I particularly hate any and all plotlines related to the drug business, but other than that, I love the characters, the setting, and the small-town shenanigans.

Ha ha yes ridiculous for sure, but like you said, it’s addictive! And I agree, the drug plotline doesn’t really seem to fit in, but luckily it isn’t the focus.

  6. A 5 star read in the first week? The year is looking up! 🙂 And I’ve never seen a big horn sheep in person so that photo by Moses was a treat.

  7. I watched some of season one, but I didn’t connect with the main characters so I dropped out. I like Rachel Hawkins books. I”m glad to see you found it to be a 5-star book!

You would LOVE The Serpent and the Wings of Night!! Especially if you loved Fourth Wing, it’s that good, except it’s vampires instead of dragons:-)

  8. I watched I think only the first season of Virgin River, I enjoyed it at first but there was more and more drama that I just couldn’t go on! All the anxiety! I’ve never read the books though. I really want to read The Heiress, and The Serpent and the Wings of Night. Looking forward to your reviews!

  9. I’ve read some of the Virgin River books and enjoyed them. I need to keep going with the series. One of these days I’ll pick up a Rachel Hawkins’ suspense. Have a great week!

  10. I love it when a TV adaptation is done really well. I started watching a show on netflix that was totally random, it just looked interesting, and it was pretty decent!

Mislaid and Medusa are two I want to get.

And wow check out that sheep!

  11. I just finished The Serpent and the Wings of Night and had a fun time with it! Looking forward to comparing notes. And if you’re looking for another soapy, not exactly good but you can’t stop watching Netflix Show, may I also recommend Sweet Magnolias.

Well I was about to finish The Serpent and the Wings of Night until I realized my book was missing 33 pages, lol. (I had to buy the digital book so I could keep reading). And I will definitely check out Sweet Magnolias!

  12. Glad you’ve had your first 5 star read of the year. I did too, with the first Emily Wilde book. I’m glad I finally read it at last.
I’m sure I have the first Virgin River book. I haven’t watched the tv series yet but it does sound entertaining so might give it a try once I need a new show 😀

  13. Glad you are enjoying VR so much. I’m completely caught up on the series and will say the books and the show are very different plots with similar characters. There are families in the books that have yet to make it to the show and they have made the show overly dramatic. I love Mel and Jack in the books but have to admit at times in the show I found Mel annoying. I can’t wait for the next season though and hope they have more Preacher – he is my fave! I hope to read The Heiress this month and hope I love it as much as you. Have a great week. I’ve been running behind getting my weekend posts up but did do one early this morning and it even has an updated puppy pic that wasn’t a blur!

  14. Looks like the new year has got off to a good start – hope that continues. I’m definitely going to pick up a copy of the Heiress, it’s an author that I like already so looking forward to that.
    Lynn 😀
