What’s On My Plate – January 2024

Happy New Year, everyone! 2023 flew by so fast, and here we are again at the top of a new year. This month is packed with all sorts of “end of the year” posts, as well as reviews, memes and more. Today I’m focusing on the books I hope to read and review in January, and I have to say I’ve been very restrained as far as accepting books for review from publishers, at least compared to years past. I’ve already read four of these, so I’m off to a good start, at least in the reading department. I actually have a shot at finishing all of these books, and because February seems to be a bit out of control, hopefully I can get a jump on those books as well.

Here are my January reads:

Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett is a book a lot of my fellow bloggers are looking forward to. I may have started this by the time you read these words, so look for a review soon.

I’ve already read and LOVED The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins. I mean wow, I had so much fun with this well written story. Look for a review soon!

I’ve also read Thirteen Ways to Kill Lulabelle Rock by Maud Woolf, and may I say “wow” again, I absolutely loved it! This is a debut, and I’m blown away by Woolf’s writing skills.

Mislaid in Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire is a solid entry into her Wayward Children series. I may be getting Wayward Children fatigue, though. With book #9, I feel like there’s a lot of repetition in the series. Or maybe it’s just me, a lot of readers love it.

The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Nayler was very weird, but I enjoyed it!

Deep Freeze by Michael C. Grumley looks like a really good sci-fi thriller, the first in a new series. I guess Grumley is pretty well known, but this is my first time hearing about him.

The Sanctuary by Andrew Hunter Murray is being described as a “high concept thriller,” involving a mysterious island. This sounds like fun!

Sons of Darkness by Gourav Mohanty is long, almost 700 pages, and I’m sort of regretting accepting it for review. But it is getting good reviews, and hopefully I’ll have time to read it.

And finally, I haven’t even announced my TBR Jar Challenge, but I’ve randomly selected my book for January, and it’s Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. I’ve read so many glowing reviews of this book, I’m excited to finally read it! And stay tuned for more about my TBR Jar:-)

Are you planning on reading any of these books? What books are you excited to read this month?

  1. Oh wow, congratulations on getting so many of these read already. That’s fantastic. My readings fallen apart over the last few weeks but I’m really hoping to get going with it again later today. I’m glad to hear you’ve loved a few of these too, and hope that the rest are hits with you.

Hopefully I’ll finally get to Emily Wilde this month, although I have a series to finish and another to start so maybe it’ll have to wait until after Faebound too

Happy Reading. I hope 2024 brings lots of new favourites your way.

  2. This is going to be such a great month for you! You already know I love Remarkably Bright Creatures, but I’m excited for The Tusks of Extinction. I’ve heard really great things about Sons of Darkness so maybe it will be worth it!

  4. I forget I had an eARC of “Sons of Darkness,” too! That’s going to have to wait until after I read my eARC (“Sample”) of “Empire of the Damned.”

  5. Happy New Year! Congrats on already having such a head start on January books, that’s always a good feeling. Very excited for your review of The Heiress, that’s one I’ve been curious about. I loved the second Emily Wilde book, The Tusks of Extinction, The Sanctuary, and Sons of Darkness are ones I’m interested in as well. I hope you have a fantastic month!

Happy New Year, Jordan! I am behind with blog hopping so I’ll be catching up with your posts today. The Heiress is amazing, it may even be a 5 star book for me (either 4.5 or 5)
