Over-Booked [187] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

This will be my last book haul of 2023, and it’s a fairly big one. Publishers are gearing up for 2024, and I’m not sad about that! Here are my most recent book acquisitions from publishers and authors:

Books in the mail for review:

This first bunch is courtesy of the wonderful folks at Tor Books! First, a trio of highly anticipated horror books from Nightfire:

I’m beyond excited to have a copy of Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes, whose Dead Silence was a five star read for me a couple of years ago, and this looks like another scary space horror story.

I loved Jennifer Thorne’s Lute, and I’m looking forward to her next book, Diavola.

And last year I read Liz Kerin’s Night’s Edge and really enjoyed it. The sequel of this dark vampire series, First Light, comes out next year, and I can’t wait!

I’m pretty picky about epic fantasy these days, but The Silverblood Promise by James Logan sounds like it’s going to be great. I’ll admit it’s the Nicholas Eames comparison that sealed the deal for me:-)

The Serpent & the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent is a recent Bramble release that I accepted for review at the last moment. I’m going to try to get to it by the end of the year, it’s getting a lot of buzz.

Here’s another fantastic group of 2024 releases:

I haven’t read a Kim Harrison book in years, so I’m looking forward to jumping into a brand new series, starting with Three Kinds of Lucky. Big thanks to Ace for the review copy:-)

With thanks to Titan Books for the next two books! First is A Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock, a queer horror story that sounds amazing! This is a March release and I’m not sure if I can wait:-) And I’ve really enjoyed A.G. Slatter in the past, so I’m very excited to read The Briar Book of the Dead. This looks like a dark fantasy with witches and vampires.

And I’m so grateful to have a copy of The Angel of Indian Lake by Stephen Graham Jones, the final book in his Indian Lake Trilogy. Huge thanks to Saga Press for the review copy:-)

The Sanctuary by Andrew Hunter Murray is a January release, and so I’ll be reading it soon. This is a dystopian thriller with some mixed reviews on Goodreads, but I’m looking forward to it! Big thanks to Blackstone for the review copy!

And The Wedding Party by L.R. Jones is a thriller that I accepted for review simply because of the setting: the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, the inspiration for Stephen King’s Overlook Hotel in The Shining. This one has mixed reviews as well, so I’ll let you know how it goes:-) Thanks to Thomas & Mercer for an ARC:-)

Digital books for review:

One of my goals for next year is to request fewer books on NetGalley. I know, we’ve all said those words to ourselves, right? I say it ever year and yet. Still, I’m trying to only request books I’ve featured on Future Fiction (and therefore I’m very excited for), or books that other bloggers have recommended. The first three fit those two categories.

The Nature of Disappearing by Kimi Cunningham Grant is a highly anticipated 2024 book, and I was so happy to be approved for it. I loved her last book, and even though this doesn’t come out until June (!), I’m excited to dive in.

The House That Horror Built by Christina Henry. Henry can be a mixed bag, but I do look forward to each new book she writes. This comes out in May, so I won’t be reading it soon, but the blurb is calling to me and I can’t wait!

I was already curious about A Haunting in the Arctic by C.J. Cooke, but reading Lynn’s review sealed the deal. This sounds super dark but very good.

Big thanks to Minotaur and Berkley:-D

I recently read and loved L. MacNaughton’s Her Second Chance Shifter, and Laurence was kind enough to offer copies of the rest of the series. Her Date With the Demon, Her Fae Fake Fiancé and Her Vampire Next Door are waiting on my Kindle to be read soon. Thank you Laurence!

Are you excited to read any of these books?

  1. Some excellent books to look forward to. I’m really looking forward to the AG Slatter book – I don’t have a clue what it’s about, I want to read it because I’m loving her work.
Thanks so much for the shout out. I hope the CJ Cooke works for you. It is definitely a difficult read but I thought it was really good – a proper haunting.
    Lynn 😀

  2. I didn’t manage to get an ARC of Ghost Station, but I’m planning on reading it at some point.

It’s uncanny how much the cover for The Sanctuary resembles Catriona Ward’s Looking Glass Sound…

Haha! Good luck with that (and no, I’m not being ironical).

  3. A BOTANICAL DAUGHTER looks interesting…I found it this week while browsing on B&N and was surprised I hadn’t seen it mentioned in the blogosphere yet, but you’re the first! I picked up THE SERPENT & THE WINGS OF THE NIGHT a few months ago before the indie version went out of print, mainly thanks to bookstagram where I saw quite a lot of gushing over it. The author seems to be fairly popular, so I hope you enjoy it, too!

  4. The Nature of Disappearing is likely the one that most catches my attention, but I look forward to reading your thoughts on any of them you read.
