Future Fiction #251 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Think of this as a bonus Future Fiction – Before I dive into science fiction pics for Sci Fi Month (starting next Wednesday), please enjoy these three exciting cover reveals:

A young woman wins the role of a lifetime in a film about a legendary heroine — but the real drama is behind the scenes in this sumptuous historical epic from the author of Mexican Gothic .

1950s Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times.

So when the film’s mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves.

Two actresses, both determined to make it to the top in Golden Age Hollywood—a city overflowing with gossip, scandal, and intrigue—make for a sizzling combination.

But this is the tale of three women, for it is also the story of the princess Salome herself, consumed with desire for the fiery prophet who foretells the doom of her stepfather, a woman torn between the decree of duty and the yearning of her heart.

Before the curtain comes down, there will be tears and tragedy aplenty in this sexy Technicolor saga.

The Seventh Veil of Salome by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Releases in July 2024 from Del Rey. I’m always going to read any Silvia Moreno-Garcia book that comes out, even if it isn’t speculative fiction. This historical movie-centric story sounds like it has plenty of drama, and I love that the author is writing another story dealing with the cinema, after this year’s Silver Nitrate.

In this thriller full of action, humor, and charm, the world’s most lethal assassin has left the violent life behind and joined a 12-step group for recovering killers. But when he’s attacked and barely survives, he must figure out who’s after him and why—without breaking his pledge never to kill again.

Mark is the most dangerous killer-for-hire in the world. His nickname—the Pale Horse—breathes fear into the cold heart of every rival who hears it. But after learning the hard way that this life has made him more monster than man, Mark has left all of that behind. With the help of his sponsor, Kenji, he has joined a group of former assassins who meet in secret for support in recovery.

Then he’s viciously attacked by an unknown assailant. Thrust back into the shadowy world of betrayal and assassination, injured and on the run from New York to Singapore to London, Mark must solve the mystery of who’s coming for him and why. Has the Agency decided he knows too much and must be taken out? Has a rival decided to attack now that he’s laid his weapons down? Has one of the thousands of people who might want revenge finally come for it? And how will he survive the onslaught without killing anyone? For an assassin, Mark learns, non-violence is a real hassle.

A perfectly paced, globe-trotting, and action-filled thriller, Assassins Anonymous is also full of both hilarity and heart, witty and surprisingly affecting, and will delight fans of John Wick and Barry.

Assassins Anonymous by Rob Hart. Releases in June 2024 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons. Rob Hart is another of my “go to” authors. It will be two years since his last book (The Paradox Hotel) by the time this comes out, so I’m very excited to read this. It sounds like it has lots of humor and action!

Rival ornithologists hunt through England for a rare magical bird in this historical-fantasy rom-com reminiscent of Indiana Jones but with manners, tea, and helicopter parasols.

Beth Pickering is on the verge of finally capturing the rare deathwhistler bird when Professor Devon Lockley swoops in, capturing both her bird and her imagination like a villain. Albeit a handsome and charming villain, but that’s beside the point. As someone highly educated in the ruthless discipline of ornithology, Beth knows trouble when she sees it, and she is determined to keep her distance from Devon.

For his part, Devon has never been more smitten than when he first set eyes on Professor Beth Pickering. She’s so pretty, so polite, so capable of bringing down a fiery, deadly bird using only her wits. In other words, an angel. Devon understands he must not get close to her, however, since they’re professional rivals.

When a competition to become Birder of the Year by capturing an endangered caladrius bird is announced, Beth and Devon are forced to team up to have any chance of winning. Now keeping their distance becomes a question of one bed or two. But they must take the risk, because fowl play is afoot, and they can’t trust anyone else—for all may be fair in love and war, but this is ornithology.

The Ornithologist’s Field Guide to Love by India Holton. Releases in July 2024 from Berkley. I have yet to read India Holton, so maybe this is my chance! This sounds charming, and I cannot wait to read it.

It does sound like a lot of fun. And I have enjoyed Rob Hart’s other books, so it’s a must read for me.

  1. I would like to read more by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and The Seventh Veil of Salome sounds like another good one! Assassins Anonymous had me at the title. That one sounds like a lot of fun. I really enjoyed The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton and her upcoming releases sounds great too. I hope these all will be as wonderful as they sound! Thank you for sharing, Tammy!
Literary Feline recently posted…Can’t Wait to Read Wednesday: Calamity / Murder in a Cup / Whispers Beyond the VeilMy Profile

  2. I saw The Ornithologist’s Field Guide to Love on another blog and loved the cover, but it seemed more like a romance with a bit of fantasy than the other way around, so I’m still thinking about it!

  3. Love the cover but you know I have to skip the magical birds heh. Also very excited for the Rob Hart book, and I also love the cover! The Seventh Veil of Salome sounds awesome too, that one will be going on my list! Great choices as always!

  4. It seems like every time I turn around Morena-Garcia is putting out another book!! I still haven’t read any of her work. I have read India Holton, though, and I loved it. It’s funny because THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEWOMEN WITCHES is the only book Berkley ever approved me for. I left a positive review and they rejected my request for the next book, lol!! So I doubt I’ll try for Holton’s next book on NG…I’m kind of over trying to get an ARC from that publisher. Anyway, if you are lucky enough to get an ARC, I hope you enjoy it!

That’s so weird about Berkley, but I have heard they are sort of inconsistent with their approvals, so it isn’t just you. I’ll definitely try my luck with this one:-)
