Future Fiction #246 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

A genre for (almost) everyone: horror, SF and fantasy, take a look:

Maybe this is a ghost story…

Andrew Larimer thought he left the past behind. But when he receives a late-night phone call from an old friend, he finds he has no choice but to return home, and to confront the memories—and the horror—of a night, years ago, that changed everything.

For Andrew and his friends, the past is not dead, and the curse that has befallen them now threatens to destroy all that they’ve become.

One dark secret…

One small-town horror…

Small Town Horror by Ronald Malfi. Releases in June 2024 from Titan Books. I rarely go on Twitter, er, X anymore, but I just happened to see this cover reveal the other day and I knew I had to share. I’m beyond excited for a new Ronald Malfi book next year! It’s not on Goodreads yet, so I linked to the Crime Reads website where the cover was revealed, and there’s also an excerpt. Can’t wait!

A ground-breaking, mind-bending and wildly imaginative epic verse revolution in SF. A saga of colony ships, shattering moons and cataclysmic war in a new Eden.

Truly unforgettable and richly lyrical eco-fiction, for fans of Kim Stanley Robinson, Adrian Tchaikovsky, and Jeff VanderMeer.

Rochelle wakes from cryostasis to take up her role on the colony ark, Calypso . But she wakes to find the ship deserted, and the interior taken over by a forest. As she explores and finds the last remaining members of the crew, she discovers a legacy of war conducted whilst she slept.

The engineers and the botanists have different visions for how to build the world. The engineers would build a new utopia of technology; the botanists would have the planet bloom, untouched by mankind. Both will destroy the other to ensure their vision of paradise prevails.

And Rochelle, the last to wake on the Calypso , holds the balance of power in her hands.

A high-stakes SF adventure of shattering moons, a colonial ark turned into Eden, post-human evolutions, delivered in a uniquely compelling form.

Calypso by Oliver K. Langmead. Releases in February 2024 from Titan Books. If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time, you’ll know how much I adore Oliver Langmead’s books. His upcoming book is a story told in verse, which isn’t really in my wheelhouse. However, it’s not the first time he’s written one, and I actually read and reviewed Dark Star way back in my early days of blogging, and loved it. I cannot wait to read this one!

From the author of The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy comes a heartwarming fantasy with a best friends-to-lovers rom com twist–When Harry Met Sally, but with dragons!—set in the delightful demigod and donut-filled world of Tanria.

The entire town of Eternity was shocked when widowed, middle-aged Twyla Banneker partnered up with her neighbor and best friend, Frank Ellis, to join the Tanrian Marshals. Eight years later, Twyla and Frank are still patrolling the dangerous land of Tanria, the former prison of the Old Gods.

Twyla might look like a small town mom who brings cheesy potatoes to funerals and whips up a batch of cookies for the school bake sale, but her rewarding career in law enforcement has been a welcome change from the domestic grind of mom life, despite the misgivings of her grown children.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) a recent decrease in on-the-job peril has made Twyla and Frank’s job a lot safer … and a lot less exciting. So when they discover the body of one of their fellow marshals covered in liquid glitter–and Frank finds himself the inadvertent foster dad to a baby dragon–they are more than happy to be back on the beat.

Soon, the friends wind up ensnared in a nefarious plot that goes far deeper than any lucrative Tanrian mineshaft. But as the danger closes in and Twyla and Frank’s investigation becomes more complicated, so does their easy friendship. And Twyla starts to realize that her true soul mate might just be the person who has lived next door all along…

The Undermining of Twyla and Frank (The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy #2) by Megan Bannen. Releases in July 2024 from Orbit Books. I had a lot of fun with The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy, and this is set in the same world but focuses on different characters. I have to admit, the “When Harry Met Sally, but with dragons!” tagline is very appealing:-)

  1. Calypso sounds amazing!!! I am not the biggest fan of Hart and Mercy so I don’t know if I am interested in this second book (even if it has dragons so… Who knows?) but I really really want to read Calypso!!

I’m slightly worried about the “verse” part but I have confidence in Langmead to make it work:-)

  2. As ever, three intriguing books, Tammy. But it’s the last one that has snagged my attention – when Harry met Sally with dragons sounds irresistible!!

  3. Legit put Calypso on my list so fast, I hadn’t even finished reading the post heh. Had to come back. Twyla and Frank I am SOOO excited for! I am definitely interested in Small Town Horror, too! Thanks for putting two on my radar! (Obviously Twyla and Frank was on my list from the minute it was on Goodreads heh)

I’m glad so many people are excited about Calypso! I didn’t think they would be because of the whole “verse” thing.
